  1. Well, considering our facilities and the Nike presence are a big draw for high schoolers considering Oregon, I would say that OBD will be winners in this new trend of testing future portal waters. Years prior, they might have not have considered Oregon at all because it's too far away from Florida, for example, but now they'll remember us from their free visit. Of course this works the other way around too, where may lose players to the portal who bolt home to USC, but if we are winning- that shouldn't happen. As for keeping in touch, coaches can only speak with recruits in open recruiting windows, and for roster players- they can only interact if a player has officially entered the portal. You can't just text player you missed out on on Saturday evening's in the fall, saying "hey, I saw you on TV today. On the bench! Just letting you know we still think you're great! Did you see we are ranked number #1 in the first CFP rankings? TTYS."
  2. The 1st round of the 2022 NFL draft averaged 10.04M viewers, while the average viewers for the NBA Finals was 12M, 10.87M for the World Series, and 4.6M for the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. That's all you need to know. 10M viewers with no game being played. Personally, recruiting is much more interesting to me than a generic game where the Ducks are favored by 21. In ideal situation, John Canzano would be enamored with the Ducks, and his children would have gone to the University of Oregon instead of Oregon State. He would have a Ducks Football and Basketball recruiting hour on his radio show, year-round! I'm not holding my breath that any of that will happen. I'm exactly the guy that would rather hear about a random sophomore high school prospect over the happenings of Portland State, UP, or whatever else is out there in the fringes.
  3. If we are going by what refs have decided over this season, I'd say that there should have been a targeting penalty enforced against TCU at the end of the Fiesta Bowl. Michigan got hosed there (and several times before), but I am fine with the penalty not being meted out, because it did not affect the play, and because it was iffy and in an important moment. Which gets me to what I think about targeting... 1) The punishment is usually too harsh 2) If nobody is hurt, it should be a 15 yard penalty at best 3) If a player is somewhat hurt, or if the targeting was "on purpose," then the league should suspend the player for one half after they scrutinize the aftermath after the game 4) If a player targets another player in an extremely dangerous way, and the injured player is carted to the locker room, the offender should be tossed from the game, and subject to further punishment by the league after the game, but not exceeding 1 game 5) Video replay refs should have instructions where the "tie" goes to the player being accused of targeting 6) Field refs should be instructed not to be "quick to throw a flag for targeting," if they didn't see it clearly- no call 7) Coaches should be given one targeting challenge flag per half for times the field refs missed the call, and video refs can not send an alert to review to the field judges if there was no whistle on the play
  4. The Heisman website also says the trophy is awarded to the most outstanding player. Note- not the most valuable player. I would agree that Duggan is more valuable to TCU, but that Williams is more outstanding. If you everyone wants to just point out numbers, Bo Nix beats out Duggan in multiple categories: passing yards, pass efficiency, rushing td's, and QBR. Also, Nix only had 1 less passing TD than Duggan. Williams trounced these guys. He deserved the Heisman. No doubt. And obviously the voters agreed. Props to Duggan for making it to the NC.
  5. Oregon wins with a score of Oregon 44-NC 26, 3 take aways, 3 sacks, 289 passing yards.
  6. I can't believe Missouri made it to a bowl game. I thought the NCAA decided they were banned from bowls for life!
  7. Very few. High school seniors committing to perennial Top-25 programs 100% better have "making the NFL" on their minds, and I hope that should be realistic for every player we sign. I would sometimes sit next to a Duck football player in a business class in my freshman or sophomore year. After the application and acceptance into the official junior/senior College of Business happened, the scholarship athletes were hard to find. No big deal. I suppose my point was less on UW recruits being interested in academics, and more of me finally giving UW credit for something- academics. And, I don't think it's really very debatable. I've seen alumni donation letters sent to me explaining how a certain specific program (like some facet of Biology) is ranked higher than the same program at Ivy League schools. That's kind of reaching. But why would I give props to UW for anything? Because unlike those that had funny reactions to my comment (I understand!), I do believe 100% that the Pac is on thin ice. I would prefer that UO goes to the B1G, and I think we need to team up with UW to get that done. Trust me, I despise Husky football fans. Sometime around 2010 or so I "bought" two tickets on Craigslist for a Ducks/Husky game for about $150 each. When I went to pick the tickets up near my condo in the Pearl District in Portland, I knew something had gone wrong when the address was some random building, and not an accounting office where the guy on Craigslist said he worked. I called his number, and it was a bunch of bro's laughing and playing the Husky fight song in the background on an mp3 player or something. I was actually sad about humanity rather than mad!
  8. I'm sure Oregon fans say equally dumb things on hivemind threads. If everybody agrees on a conspiracy it never ends well. I'll be the first to admit that the University of Washington is a much better school for academics in general. Frankly, I think Oregon needs to work in concert with UW to get an expedited invitation to the BIG-10, or concessions for higher payouts from the PAC. Once the dust settles, the hate can continue.
  9. Suge Knight vibes. No Vegas Bowls for Mr. Dan Lanning. Watch out!
  10. It would be a smoother process if he were 18. I believe he is still 17, and that affects NIL money. When a player is 18, they get 100% of the NIL money right away, and can walk into a bank and open an account for it. The parents can't touch it. It's more complicated for minors.
  11. Yup, it's possible Presley was waiting to see what Bowen would do. Also, Bowen's mom was mad when he picked the Ducks, and she's trying to have him sign with ND.
  12. I don't know. Our class is great, but that's contingent on Dickey and Bowen. And it's possible we could lose both in the next few hours. That would mean losing 2/3 of our five stars. That's a huge downgrade.
  13. Caleb Presley has been rumored to flip to the Huskies for a long time. That said, he didn't sign today until Bowen, who plays his position, pledged to Oregon. So, it's too bad, because now we might lose both.
  14. Mucho no bueno. His mom wanted him to go to ND. I hope he realizes that NIL payments will be made payable to him when he's 18. He doesn't have to give a penny to his parents. Hope he stays! This news is quite bad, since after he declared his intention on TV, Presley officially left- not that he was going to sign with us anyway I suppose.
  15. Hopefully it is good news at 6pm. I don't understand why people downplay things when we lose recruits. One mustn't spin things to make things better. Dickey leaving would be a massive loss. No sense saying otherwise. Let's hope it's good news! Hope didn't work for Dante Moore, though. And, Peyton Bowen never actually signed his LOI, and is talking with ND, apparently. That's more bad news!
  16. Where did you see 100%? The rosiest I saw was 60%, and USC experts give themselves 55%.
  17. This would be huge! I see that USC experts were saying this evening that he has a 55% chance of picking the Trojans. I guess this will be one of those times where we won't know until he puts a hat on?
  18. Getting one of Hudson Card or Novosad would be a minor coup for Oregon after losing Dillingham's Moore. If Card came, Novosad wouldn't, and vice versa. Novosad would probably only sign if he was told by the Ducks that they are not seeking a portal transfer. It should be noted that Novosad wants to enroll at a university in January. I think the odds are much higher that Oregon signs him, than them picking up Card. Card should be playing now. The point is to make the NFL, after all. Winning National Championships and Conference titles is absolutely secondary if you have NFL skills.
  19. I agree. I never bought into the notion that Dante Moore was expecting to start as a freshman at a top-15 program, so I was not surprised when he mentioned Nix returning did not affect his decision. As for top-caliber portal players, it is a different situation. They absolutely should expect to start wherever they go. If they wanted to sit on the bench they would probably have never hit the portal. Oregon is not getting Clemson's DJU or Texas's Hudson Card because Bo Nix is 100% going to start next year. Nix is projected to be in contention for the Heisman trophy. It would be unwise, in my opinion, for these type of guys to ride the pine for a year. If they don't get better offers I suppose it's a possibility, though.
  20. He literally said Nix coming back was not a factor. I don't think he even expects to start. He said he left because Dillingham left, and that he went to UCLA because he likes the offense Chip Kelly ran when he was at Oregon. So, basically he's not impressed it UTSA's Will Stein. I can't blame him. I'm not sure why we hired someone who has not proven themselves in a P5 or NFL high profile job.
  21. I worry we might lose out on players like Dickey, who is pictured above. The incoming class won't have a QB, and we didn't sign a QB last year either. So, what if Oregon can't get a good QB transfer next year? What if the market is slim pickings? What if Nix gets hurt?
  22. I was a used car salesman for one week. I know young people complain about the job and housing market these days, but after 9/11 the economy tanked, right when I was a senior! Pretty much zero worthwhile companies came to UO's business school job fair later that year, unlike in Spring 2001. I was interviewed by KEZI for a short news-bite, and in a job interview the guys interviewing me stopped the questions for a bit while smirking, and said, "aren't you the guy that was on the local news last night saying that you just needed any job in business?" So, I was lucky, and I actually went to work for a corporation in Germany (unfortunately I saw the Ducks lose in a bowl game to Wake Forest at a bar in Amsterdam). When I got back the economy still sucked, so I worked at a dealership in Portland for a week. I had a job offer that started at $40k, but told a saleslady that I was shadowing that it seemed a little low, and she said she'd been there for 10 years, and never made more than $30,000. Anyway, long story. At least I incorporated the Ducks in the tale.
  23. Well, hopefully he still signs with Oregon. We didn't even sign a QB in last year's class. Not signing a QB two years in a row? If Phil Knight needs to pay more to get him- pull the trigger. I don't see any "blessings in disguise" here. If he didn't pan out, we could have benched him and signed a top recruit in the next class. You have to actually have quarterback recruits. We got lucky with Nix for one year. Next year he could get hurt on day one. Recruits aren't going to come here if they have to gamble on our gambles.
  24. Teams are going to get caught playing with fire. Boosters and third parties can result in bowl bans or multiple scholarships being removed. If a player is on the fence, they might just hit the portal to see what they get offered, and go back to their school if they don't get a good deal or "promised" playing time. They'll have to decide quickly, though. If you're in the portal when the next school term begins, you're likely out of luck as the school can drop you.
  25. The NCAA has been neutered in recent years, but it is currently a violation for a school representative or member of the coaching staff to contact a player on another team if that player is not already in the transfer portal. I'm not sure what the punishment would be, but I imagine it could be a loss of a bowl game. That said, if you can only engage with players in the portal at the end of the season in a very short window, that would make it pretty tough to be Plan A or even Plan B. Plan A is high school 5 and 4 star players. The portal is for insurance, and to shore things up when something went wrong.
