It's Official - Dante Moore Flipped to UCLA
2002duck replied to HawaiiDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
He literally said Nix coming back was not a factor. I don't think he even expects to start. He said he left because Dillingham left, and that he went to UCLA because he likes the offense Chip Kelly ran when he was at Oregon. So, basically he's not impressed it UTSA's Will Stein. I can't blame him. I'm not sure why we hired someone who has not proven themselves in a P5 or NFL high profile job. -
Bo Nix and Dante Moore: Did Lanning Do it Right?
2002duck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I worry we might lose out on players like Dickey, who is pictured above. The incoming class won't have a QB, and we didn't sign a QB last year either. So, what if Oregon can't get a good QB transfer next year? What if the market is slim pickings? What if Nix gets hurt? -
I was a used car salesman for one week. I know young people complain about the job and housing market these days, but after 9/11 the economy tanked, right when I was a senior! Pretty much zero worthwhile companies came to UO's business school job fair later that year, unlike in Spring 2001. I was interviewed by KEZI for a short news-bite, and in a job interview the guys interviewing me stopped the questions for a bit while smirking, and said, "aren't you the guy that was on the local news last night saying that you just needed any job in business?" So, I was lucky, and I actually went to work for a corporation in Germany (unfortunately I saw the Ducks lose in a bowl game to Wake Forest at a bar in Amsterdam). When I got back the economy still sucked, so I worked at a dealership in Portland for a week. I had a job offer that started at $40k, but told a saleslady that I was shadowing that it seemed a little low, and she said she'd been there for 10 years, and never made more than $30,000. Anyway, long story. At least I incorporated the Ducks in the tale.

Well, hopefully he still signs with Oregon. We didn't even sign a QB in last year's class. Not signing a QB two years in a row? If Phil Knight needs to pay more to get him- pull the trigger. I don't see any "blessings in disguise" here. If he didn't pan out, we could have benched him and signed a top recruit in the next class. You have to actually have quarterback recruits. We got lucky with Nix for one year. Next year he could get hurt on day one. Recruits aren't going to come here if they have to gamble on our gambles.

Can a School Do Better Building a Roster Through the Portal?
2002duck replied to 1Funduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Teams are going to get caught playing with fire. Boosters and third parties can result in bowl bans or multiple scholarships being removed. If a player is on the fence, they might just hit the portal to see what they get offered, and go back to their school if they don't get a good deal or "promised" playing time. They'll have to decide quickly, though. If you're in the portal when the next school term begins, you're likely out of luck as the school can drop you. -
Can a School Do Better Building a Roster Through the Portal?
2002duck replied to 1Funduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The NCAA has been neutered in recent years, but it is currently a violation for a school representative or member of the coaching staff to contact a player on another team if that player is not already in the transfer portal. I'm not sure what the punishment would be, but I imagine it could be a loss of a bowl game. That said, if you can only engage with players in the portal at the end of the season in a very short window, that would make it pretty tough to be Plan A or even Plan B. Plan A is high school 5 and 4 star players. The portal is for insurance, and to shore things up when something went wrong. -
If we do all the things you mentioned I would imagine the four corner schools would strongly consider bailing to the BIG-12. They would be smart to do so. Oregon and Washington, and Phil Knight, have not done enough begging to get into the BIG-10. The notion of taking a little less money in the first year is not good enough. We should accept half, or heck, zero. We need to be in a relevant conference. The PAC-12 is dead without USC and UCLA, especially if UO and Washington demand higher returns. Either we subsidize the conference so it can exist, or we leave.

I was not expected Moore to start next year. If Nix does not return, I assumed we would try very hard to get the best QB in the portal in addition to Moore. I doubt Moore expects to start as a Freshman at a top school. If the only reason he was picking Oregon was he assumed he would start, well I don't know what to say about that. If Nix does not return, and we get some lackluster former 4 star from the Portal, then I could see Moore starting. Of course it's just my opinion. Again, I don't think Moore downgrades Oregon by Nix returning.

While this is tough to hear, the good news in this article is that Moore Facetimed Lanning's in-home visit with RB commit Dante Dowdell yesterday. According to the article, OSU was Moore's "dream school" growing up. That's the bad news. Unfortunately, Justin Herbert and the Chargers don't have a bye-week, because we could really need a visit from him around now. Thanks for the list, even if it's depressing. Tons of Ducks transferring with few players coming our way. It hurts to lose top caliber players like Flowe only to pick up a player in the same position that is not as physically and athletically gifted, and was hurt all last year. I'm not too concerned about replacing players like Dollars or McGee with portal players, as I would hope that our incoming freshmen will be much better than them anyway. I wouldn't mind picking up a bunch of blue chip players on the portal wire from Texas A&M as long as they have clean disciplinary records!

Portal Gates Opened by a Bo Nix Return?
2002duck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I imagine if Nix is coming back that Oregon would have asked him to keep quiet about it until Dante Moore (or someone else) signs in the early commitment period- which is in a week and a half. -
The first thing I look for in this forum every day is to make sure Dante Moore has not decommitted. So, this is not good, not good at all!

Hopefully he's a Eugene resident in the spring.

In Case You Didn't Know - OSU Bowl Game Rescheduled
2002duck replied to Mic's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Well, I think the main problem is the date, not the time. The game is on the 17th, and the early signing period begins on the 21st. I'd gather the coaches really need to be focusing on recruiting in the final stretch, and not prepping for a bowl game. That said, I'm not sure how big of a deal the early signing process is for a team like OSU. So, Saturday at 11:30 am is not great, but it's on a Saturday, and people generally seem to like 12:30 kickoffs. Also, it will be 12:30 in Vegas, and 2:30 on the East coast/Florida. The Holiday Bowl is on a Wednesday at 5 pm. I'd much rather play on Saturday the 31st at 11:30 am. -
Dan Lanning has already given a press brief, and he was elated to say that Bo Nix is excited to play in the bowl game. I don't know how to read tea leaves (does anyone know how to read a leaf?), but at the very least you can count on Bo Nix starting, and for Oregon to try to win the game. Frankly, I'd have preferred if TT entered the portal before Butterfield. An unknown is better than what TT has shown.
-
Just look at Slovis at Pitt. He entered the portal again today. You may remember him from USC. I'm not sure if he'll have to sit out, though. That would be strange. I just know you don't have to sit out the first time you transfer.
-
I doubt that. USC will go to the Cotton Bowl as an at large team. They are 11-2. The Sun Bowl would be a tragic spot for the Ducks. It has a very low payout, the worst location, and the worst date. It's not possible for Oregon to go to the LA Bowl because they have to take Washington State. As far as bowl games go, the Huskies were the losers today (except for USC, of course). A 10-2 Washington would be picked by the Rose Bowl over a 9-4 Utah. 1) USC: Cotton 2) Utah: Rose 3) Alamo: Washington 4) Holiday: Oregon 5) Sun: UCLA 6) Vegas: OSU 7) LA: WSU
-
I think USC will go to a NY6 bowl. Maybe the Cotton Bowl. So, the California aspect remains relevant, but I think the Huskies are going to the Alamo Bowl.
-
We deserved to lose to WSU, but I strongly believe we got very unlucky in our losses to Washington and OSU. So, I feel we "deserved" to be 10-2 with one Pac-12 loss. That's not so bad at all. But it's also not what happened either. The biggest concern for me was that we didn't have a capable back-up QB. I mean, is that normal for a program that is expected to finish in the top 15 every year? No? Also, I'm concerned about having a lesser starting center and OL next year. We may have to get one or two transfer QB's depending on if Nix comes back. I doubt he does. So, I'd maybe drop some hints to TT to enter the portal, and get two transfers to back up or compete with Moore.
-
Well, you might not have to watch the Ducks in the Holiday Bowl, because they could drop to the Sun, Vegas, or LA Jimmy Kimmel Bowl!
-
"Long came to Georgia Tech this season after being the offensive coordinator at Tulane and Notre Dame previously. The offense was one of the worst in the country, averaging only 17 PPG, which was good for 125th in the country. The passing offense ranked near the bottom of the country and the team could not run the ball consistently." No thanks.

Can The Portland Trail Blazers Keep Up Their Hot Start?

They're 4-6 in their last 10 games, so...no? -
What Bowl Game Might Oregon Play?
2002duck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Alamo will be the best case scenario, and I don't see that happening. Most likely it's going to be the Holiday Bowl. -
Duck Commit - Fox Crader (3-Star) OT from Evergreen, WA
2002duck replied to a topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Apparently, the scouting website! I use 247sports and Crader is a 4-Star recruit! That said, I don't have allegiances in the recruiting services world. The higher they rank a Duck, the more I like them. I imagine it all evens out for the Duck players they rate lower, making all the services the same. -
So many times when TT goes in he's told to either be super cautious like he's Mr. Glass, or they do trick/cute plays. Even making him do laterals that don't turn out is practically malpractice. Oregon is doing everything possible to ruin TT. If the Oregon program refuses to give back-up QB's QB1 plays when they go in, I'd question signing with them if I were a recruit.
