Given that we were up 13-0, backed up deep into our own territory, still early in the game, it did not remotely cross my mind that Lanning would entertain a fake punt. But what an early dagger to strike them with. And huge kudos to our punter, Ross James, for totally selling the seemingly inerrant snap, as I absolutely bit on his fabulous acting job. Although I did not remotely see the fake coming, it definitely reminded me of Chip Kelly and his sizable coconuts during that era. In fact, last Saturday's game just reminded me of those Chip Kelly Oregon teams from that crazy fun four-year ride that he took us on. Oregon slightly hurried onto the field and quick snapped the ball causing me to stand and say, "it's a fake"! just as they snapped it. Watching on TV, it was harder to spot. Not until the punter lept up for a ball not there did I realize it was a fake. I immediately thought back to that day, jumped up and yelled, " it's a fake"! An awesome time to call that play. I immediately thought of the Michael Clay fake punt Chip Kelly (CK) ran, almost an exact copy. If DL takes time to have an analyst go back into our history of fun plays by which the Ducks created advantages and/or dislocated our opponents mentally and on the gridiron, that will be the stake in all our opponents' hearts (just as the onside kick from last years' game with UCLA was like the onside kicks CK ran against Harbaugh and Stanford to beat them). Now, they have to gameplan and practice against DL using those misdirection and fake plays. Of course, our opponents could use those same plays against us, but they usually don't. Well, it appears we have the right coach who is wise enough to use what he has inherited. Mr. Fishduck, thanks for posting and playing that fake punt snippet. What a great memory. It was still pretty early in the game, but I think Lanning saw all he needed to out of the Ducks D. The D was playing different. If that fake failed, I doubt Colorado converts it to 6 and Lanning new it. Most likely outcome? The one I immediately thought of was from 2013 vs UCLA...that game was very tight and intense and then Helfrich channeled some Chip and broke it open with a fake punt...Rodney Hardrick was the ball carrier I believe. I felt that DL fake punt sent a message to both teams. To the Ducks, it said "I believe in this team and NO ONE beats us today" and to the "other team" it said, "You CAN'T beat us". Message received on both counts! Charles, your sentence"what kind of sicko..." made me laugh out loud because I am right there with you! Best thing is all our opponents in our upcoming games are going to have to spend time preparing for fake punts from our Ducks. Can’t believe I just said that. Any distraction from reality works to DLs advantage. Truly a great play call when it works. Total game changer in my mind. I wonder how much time the trees will waste on this one in practice. Only big boys lined up three across behind the center so nothing to tip it off. Brilliant, and a spirit breaker for Colorado. As Charles pointed out, this Duck coaching staff is dialing up stuff that we embraced during the Grandes Heuvos de Chip era. Desert Duck No. 16 Share Posted September 28, 2023 (edited) That fake punt was stone cold and oh-so bold. One item about the fake that I just thought about is Casey's hands. Most people have no idea the speed and velocity at which a Tier-1 D1 longsnapper is hurling that ball. A standard 14 yard long snap to the punter should be in his hands in about 0.72 to 0.76 seconds... at 14 yards. At 7 yards, which is where Casey was lined up, that ball is arriving in about 0.37 seconds. That's Bo Nix like passing speed on a dart. Casey just happens to be a 300 lb defensive lineman. Even guys who regularly practice catching hot passes at 7 yards can have a tough time hanging on to that kind of speed. But Casey caught that rock like an old pro, tucked it safely under his right arm, and took off while following his blockers. But, as I was watching the replay again this morning, he did one more thing that I missed earlier. As he took off running left and saw the defenders on his right, he swung the ball over to his left side like he was a friggin' running back in order to protect the ball. So, huge props to Casey, and the entire special team, for doing so many impressive things all in the span of about 7 seconds. And a shout out to all of the unknown and unheralded long snapper specialists out there. And they prefer it that way because if you know their name, 99.9% of the time, it's because something went horribly wrong. But now Dan Lanning has surpassed even that bold attempt - by at least, what? -11 yards further back than even Chip Kelly? Now, every time Oregon lines up to punt, teams are gonna have to be wondering in the back of their minds "is this guy crazy enough to try this again"? LOOK: Oregon's Fake Punt Works Perfectly The uniforms aren't the only bold thing in Eugene. Trailing No. 12 UCLA 7-0 early on Saturday night, the No. 3 Oregon Ducks dialed up a fake punt on a 4th down at their own 26-yard line. Perhaps because the Bruins couldn't have imagined anyone would make such a call so early in a game while so deep in their own territory, the Ducks executed the fake perfectly. Linebacker Rodney Hardrick took the snap directly and then took off right up the vacated middle of the field as punter Alejandro Maldonado pantomimed a botched, high snap. Hardrick veered toward the UCLA sideline and was eventually forced out after a 66-yard gain. Two players later, Oregon running back De'Anthony Thomas would power his way into the end zone to level the score 7-7. Although UCLA would hang with Mark Helfrich's high-octane squad for the remainder of the first half, Oregon would never trail again after that scoring drive extended by this fake punt. The Ducks would outscore the Bruins 28-0 in the second half en route to a 42-14 win. Red Eddy Green No. 20 Share Posted September 29, 2023 Let me take you back to the '96 Cotton Bowl. Ducks vs Colorado. Bellotti vs Neuheisel and why we learned to truely hate the "The Weasel". New Years eve at the pep rally the weather was beautiful. Warm T shirt weather. The bands played, ralley squad and fans cheered. New Years day and game time arrived. It was cold and rainy. The temperature must have dropped 50 degrees overnight. Two more degrees and I swear it would have snowed. The Cotton Bowl is on the State Fair grounds.It is an older stadium with an upper deck on one side. Our seats were out in the open on the lower deck of that side. The crowd was sparse and we eventually migrated to the upper rows under the overhang. It did not make the game more pleasant. The Ducks did not play their best game. There were stories that Graziani was seen out late at night partying. Late in the fourth quarter the score was 32-6 Buffs. Weasel had put in his backup QB. They stalled near midfield and sent in the punter. The hike was high causing the punter to leap up to catch it. He passed over the middle to a waiting reciever. Easy first down. Oregon fans were vocal and indignant that the Weasel would pull such a stunt when they had the game well in hand. To increase our joy of hate "The Weasel" became a leg lifting, butt sniffing Husky. Is it possible to distain a Pac 12 coach any more? I believe in karma. What goes round comes round. Payback is a beiotch. We can find joy in a fake punt.
