U$C Loses Their No. 1 Recruit, More to Follow?

Recommended Posts

The USC Trojans entered late June with one of the best 2025 recruiting classes on college football. It’s suddenly taking a massive hit with five-star edge rusher Isaiah Gibson de-committing from the program on Tuesday afternoon.

Gibson, rated by 247 Sports as the No. 1 edge rusher in the country, committed to USC on March 24. The decision came just a few days after he took an unofficial visit with the Georgia Bulldogs. Nearly three months later, Gibson has re-opened his recruiting process following an official visit to Auburn.

Hayes Fawcett of On3.com first reported the news, with the 6-foot-5 edge rusher officially de-committing from the Trojans and opening up one of the most intense recruiting battles in the country.

USC isn’t out of the mix for the prized edge rusher out of Warner Robins High School. Following his commitment, On3.com has the Georgia Bulldogs as a slight favorite (49.7 percent) followed by the Trojans in second at 43.2 percent. None of the other teams listed in the top five South Carolina, Auburn, and Oklahoma – are viewed as having higher than a 1.5 percent chance of landing him.

GIbson’s decision comes at a time when there are already whispers that fellow five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry might decommit from USC. A Georgia native, On3.com’s recruiting prediction machine lists the Bulldogs as the favorites to land him at 36.9 percent with USC in second at 26 percent.

I'm sure USC fans took the news well...

After the recruits from Georgia visit Athens, good luck keeping them 'committed.' UGA is rarely going to be NIL'd out of a 5* Peach State player.

SC could be looking at a lot of Baby Gronks.

Plus why would they want to be part of a complete defensive rebuild where the HC doesn't really pay attention to that half of the team?

Leading recruiting man on the Talk'n Dawgs site has been saying for a couple of months that both Gibson and Terry will be Bulldawgs.

Hey... Riley said that defense will come first now.

And if he says that you know it must be true.

USC’s schedule is No. 1. We’ll see if the Trojans can at least be No. 12 in the country by season’s end.

Sense, meet Less. Notre Dame and LSU? 10 games vs. the P4 plus an 11th vs. Notre Dame. SC misses both Oregon and Ohio State but Troy will need all hands on deck.

Ole Miss and SC have mutually agreed to cancel the 2024-2025 home-and-home series. Makes sense for both teams.

In 2025, 26, 27, and 28, how much of a boost with the Committee will Oregon receive for playing OK State and Baylor, with two of the games on the road instead of playing four home games vs. a G5 opponent? Why help the B12 with viewership and SOS? Oregon's future schedules are tough enough without playing a P4 team OOC. Why not add a home game vs. a G5 opponent?

Hats off to Rob for managing an in-the-black athletic department but please wise-up when it comes to scheduling including dumping a game on the road in Logan, Utah.

I have to assume those B12 games on our schedule were scheduled prior to joining the B1G and we’re doing everything we can to cancel them?

Has to be the leading contender, but he has also made visits to Alabama and Florida State. Pundits all over the place for months have been suggesting the USC commit was nothing more than a youthful indiscretion, and that his southeast roots would eventually win out - someplace.

Justus Terry is also gone. In plain language.......Lincoln Riley can't recruit for sh--.

As for its only due to Knight......USC is loaded with Billionaires on their boards that are willing to throw tons of cash around. Riley is just a dud.

The latest preseason college ratings are out.....nice to be in a conference with 6 teams in the top 25 and 3 in the top 10. 4 in the top 15.

Riley can recruit however it's mostly offensive skill position players.  Elite 5* defensive players would have private misgivings about committing to a head coach with a long and consistent history of ignoring that side of the ball, no matter who he hires for a DC.

Didn't Terry previously decommit from Georgia?  And it seems this guy has upcoming visits scheduled for both U$C and the Dawgs.  🤔  Kids!

I'm not as impressed with Edge rushers anyway.  For my money, the Tackles and inside linebackers are more essential - especially ILBs that can cover the field sideline to sideline - and are awesome in pass coverage all over the field.

Blitz packages - at least in my mind- are more important than specialists.  I want a DE or OLB that can seal the edge.  That's their purpose.  The NFL ruined the game when they overhyped Lawrence Taylor, a generational linebacker with skills few will ever match.

It wasn't my fault! A Duck and a Dawg interfered with me!

Coaching failures are very different from structural or administrative failures.

Right, he didn't drop the balls, he booted the balls. You can't spell LA without cLAy Helton.

Jen Cohen has to get things organized behind the scenes. USC football operations aren’t delivering the way they should.

These articles are hilarious.  They point the blame everywhere except the coaches.  USC might very well be somewhat deficient in NIL (ironic given how much money is at that school) but most recruits want solid player development, to win games, AND have some NIL money.  Riley's constant ignorance of defense is now catching up to him and it will take years to change that narrative.  He needs to put a top 25 defense on that field for at least the next few years before high level defensive recruits take him seriously.

Yeah, 'tis funny that U$C must have plenty of dough for offensive players but not defensive.  Gosh.  Gee whiz.  Mean ol' NIL.

Looks like the beat goes on in LA. 'I'm locked into USC,' I just like visiting vacation hot spots Bloomington, IN, and Auburn, AL.

Could I put up with this kind of Baby Grock-like 'commitment?' No, and thank you Danno for doing so.

CFB recruiting today is a soap opera and every actor (player) has access to a media platform to (i) thank the coaches he committed to, (ii) apologize to all the great coaches and programs he did not commit to, (iii) when he de-commits, to thank all the great coaches he left at the altar, and (iv) to let us all know that he had been praying about his 'commitment' and it was the football gods who told him to de-commit not for more Nil money but because it was the football gods master plan for him to attend Tech and not State.

Sigh.

Bob Stoops handed off a 'Standing on 3rd Base job' at Oklahoma.

The Sooners had one B12 opponent that could come close to its roster strength, Texas. And Texas was often dysfunctional. Oklahoma boosters pre-NIL were well aware of what it cost to have top athletes leave Texas for Norman.

It's a different ball game in LA.

TROJANSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

In Oklahoma and elsewhere across the country, Lincoln Riley is being doubted. It is what it is.

I am somewhat surprised that Venables received a long extension and a pay raise before seeing how Oklahoma deals with playing in the SEC.

With the money Riley is being paid and after hiring a close to an entirely new staff to coach the defense, the Trojans best improve soon or there will be a new HC in LA.

Jon,

As a Ducks fan......your last statement makes me sad.

As a USC fan.........your last statement makes me happy.

As a football fan........I'am disgusted these coaching pretenders get millions for knowing very little while the kids for years received a free education, so, even tho the system seems like a mess, for now, kids have at it.
