Not so fast my friends. Although sour grapes come to mind, is there fire to this smoke? Koi Perich's decision to transfer to Oregon feels messy

Press Release: Lanning Promotes Hampton, Mehringer To Coordinator Roles
Now that THAT is settled, we'll see how it turns out in the long run. I say, let them call the plays from wherever they feel most comfortable. A whole lot of very successful coordinators in both college and the NFL prefer to call from the sideline. I think the advantage is that they can COACH from the sideline - looking players in the eye, going over things with the whole unit. To each his own. Dan Lanning was a pretty good coordinator and he was on the sideline. Every coordinator that DL has had at Oregon has called plays from the sideline. Maybe that is HIS preference.

OJ and the Ducks: Anybody Remember This?
One last note, that 1968 game was the next to last on real grass at Autzen. The final grass game was one week later, a W vs WSU. Both those November 1968 games were played on miserable field conditions. Before the 1969 season, Oregon had installed AstroTurf. Likewise, so did Beavis. OJ played in Eugene in 1968, and in Corvallis in 1967. Both Trojan visits were a muddy mess. Though OJ had 188 yds in Corvallis, and 67 yds in Eugene. Washington was a year earlier installing AstroTurf in 1968. I bet John McKay hated those away games during rainy season. UW likes to claim it was the first, but Indiana State had the first college turf field in 1967. Washington State vs Houston in the Dome in Sept. 1966 was the first college game played on AstroTurf. The last home game at Hayward Field was the same season - a 14-13 loss to WSU. Monsanto developed ChemGrass which was renamed AstroTurf as the result of partnering with the Houston Astrodome for the first installation.

Football Is Over, Baseball Is Around The Corner And Basketball Is A Hot Mess
Yeah, that's what I've thought is going on, it's frustrating since I think Altman is still able to coach with the best of them, but I think he's been handcuffed by the lack of investment. Kind of feels like after last year, Dana said "screw it, I'll try it another way" by getting these international players instead of guys like Angel or Bamba. It haven't worked out though. It's a shame I love college basketball, and I love a packed arena more than a football stadium when it's a primetime matchup.

What to Know About Upcoming Playoff Changes…
I’m not sure any of these expanded play-off options would work towards the highest quality end product without serious thought given to reducing the number of regular season games. This isn’t basketball; it’s football, and the majority of those that would be playing are not pro material in either talent or physical resiliency. Injuries are always a major unknown, which is why we never mention them until they happen. But, we know what a factor they can be, and that just ratchets-up with the intensity of play-off mode. Yes, injuries are part of the game; and yes, ‘next man up’ is an equally intriguing and exciting part of that. I’m just not convinced the majority of college teams are built to take the beating of some of these proposals without something giving way if the number of over all games weren’t limited.

Stewart is Returning
Him getting injured, was probably my biggest disappointment of this last season...

What to Know About Upcoming Playoff Changes…
If it is going to make enough money to subsidize a G6 playoff, I say go to 24. We all know that 13-24 have no chance unless that team is like Miami was this year. I believe the 24 team format will preserve the sport. Big 12 and ACC teams can participate, and there really wouldn't be motivaton for the B1Gand SEC to further ruin the sport. The Playoffs should start the FIRST week of December, and THE ROSE BOWL SHOULD HOST EVERY TITLE GAME. It has the best stadium, the best tradition and it is outside in the best weather. The fans that won't like it are the fans that know those superfluous teams never had a shot, but at least they can say they reached the post season. End the Bowl games. There are too many anyway. An NIT style alternative playoff can replace the bowls. Tradition is dead. Long live tradition. College Football is a version of the NFL with high school aged to college aged players. Should have happened when we old geezers were kids. More Indianas of the world would be around, and the Blue Blood fans and their programs can now be forgotten. They paid for the players all along. We're already seeing the impact of their inability to hog all the talent.

Press Release: Lanning Promotes Hampton, Mehringer To Coordinator Roles
DL has a lot more to prove as the head coach of the Ducks than I do as a fan. Ill go with his choices.

Press Release: Lanning Promotes Hampton, Mehringer To Coordinator Roles
It can be difficult to coach QBs and run the offense. It is also difficult for a QB coach to stay within the philosophy of the OC. Moore needs specific improvement in his skills. 1) Reading defenses pre snap and deciding which side of the field the defense is "giving" him. 2) Reading the defense post snap and attacking accordingly 3) Setting his feet sooner 4) Much better pocket presence a) recognizing where the pressure is coming from immediately and responding accordingly b) waiting as long as he can-even if that means getting blasted-so he can read the defense fully. 5) Throwing receivers open-like he did in Iowa City and the first TD of the semi final game. He must do this 90% of the time. a) this requires plenty of work with the receivers as sometimes he will not know the exact angle they will cut, other times it will be in a very tight window (like both the passes mentioned above). 6) More ability to check into plays that the defense is giving him. He must be able to accurately audible into positive plays, and sometimes explosive plays. 7) coaching his players up. Sometimes the OL needs to be told to immediately attack a gap instead of trying to read his assigned defender. Sometimes the receivers need to recognize gaps in coverage they can sit in so they are open quickly or simply open at all. 8) Obliterating blitz packages and simulated pressure. There is a solution to every challenge. Even on third and long. Max protect if necessary. Just smack the hell out of blitzes. Make em scared to pressure you. 9) Fire in his eyes. Even when you are angry at yourself, show some fight. Continue to lead, but let your offense know you want to kick a$$. Moore showed some grit coming off that opening pick six. I want to see that an entire game because mistakes will happen. Dante Moore is one of the most naturally gifted QBs ever. It's some of the intangibles he must work on. ONE ALWAYS MUST IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS. There is no such thing as staying the same. You are improving, or digressing. Humpty Dumpty cannot sit on the wall. Get that butt on one side or the other. Obviously, that means getting better in one or more aspect every day. Mehringer has to lift Moore to stratospheric heights. Moore needs to strike so deadly, teams fear him massively.

Stewart is Returning
Great news, let's hope he can stay healthy.

Press Release: Lanning Promotes Hampton, Mehringer To Coordinator Roles
Absolutely this... that stint as an OC was in 2016!!! That was 10 years ago. He's developed and changed as a coach or frankly he wouldn't be a Oregon. I trust Lanning and I look forward to seeing some minor changes. I want to see more deep passing routes on offense for starters. Let lose some of these speed demons we have. Probably need some offensive line improvements as well but I think he'll get them.

What to Know About Upcoming Playoff Changes…
Sixteen teams is plenty, any more just waters it down. In a 24-team playoff, seeds 17-24 would have virtually zero chance of winning it all or even advancing to the quarterfinals. I get where Petitti is coming from, in a 5+11 model ESPN (with their "advanced metrics") and the SEC can collude to stack the deck. With 24 teams and more AQs that becomes less likely. The devil of course is in the details, a 5+11 model with an impartial committee would work just fine. No byes and the first two rounds played on campus. Bid out the semifinals and the natty, there's really no need to try and incorporate the bowl system anymore, it's become antiquated. The bowls could continue with P4 and G6 teams that didn't make the playoffs, there would still plenty of interest.

OJ and the Ducks: Anybody Remember This?
HDuck, thanks for the details! Things I did not remember or never knew. I disagree with the record on Lindsey's fumble though. It is pretty strong in my memory that the receiver was well ahead of the Trojans when he fumbled. I think I do remember reading accounts of the game afterwards that sound like what you wrote, and being puzzled by the different account.

Press Release: Lanning Promotes Hampton, Mehringer To Coordinator Roles
I don’t know anything about the promotion of Mehringer to OC and will trust Lanning on that one. I am nervous about switching him to QB coach. With Dante’s return and the star studded depth behind him and an absolutely stacked receiver room, I’m sure we could get the best QB coach in the country.

Benson Gone
Benson was everything I hoped he would be after seeing his first real game with us. I'm not sure Stewart really would go have produced any better than Benson did. I really hope he played his way into the middle of the draft.
