Is the Jumbo Formation Back for the Ducks?
Babyjesus615 replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I really wish Stein would implement this package on manageable yardage situations as well. There are constraint plays that could be run off this formation. It forces a defense to either sell out for a strength vs. strength match-up at the LOS, which opens up a receiver, running-back, QB keeper; or attempt to play their regular 3rd-4th down coverage. Stein should love the options this play gives a smart QB like Nix This is the play I wished Oregon would have run last year against Washington. The D was showing extra men at the line and the call could have easily been made to pop Whittington outside rather than straight up the gut (where he slipped). He could have either handed the ball to him or swung a pitch to him (Like OSU did to Utah in the 4th down that went to the house). I hope Stein/Lanning re-discover the benefits of 14-J. We may need a long, time-killing drive to close a game out. This does the trick -

I'd like to see comparison with time of possession and how it stacks up to the Kelly/Helfrich years. We move quickly down the field these days but its because of chunk yardage and not 18 second snap counts (though we dial up the tempo regularly). At least during Dillingham's one year we were able to control the pace of the game. Fast when needed, slow when it's to our advantage.

Former Duck Tyler Shough Out 6 to 8 Weeks

Kid should try and get a medical waiver for next season, transfer to a school with a high level offense that he can win the job at, then exhaust his eligibility and go be a coach! -
1 PAC team will get in if it is 1 loss and the conference champ. They are not giving a 1 loss non-champ in the PAC a shot if the BIG and SEC also have 1 loss non-champs. That bias won't simply wear off just because of how many teams we have ranked to start the season. The CFP committee has always, and is just looking for reasons to slide our teams down the rankings. I do think that IF Oregon, Washington, and USuC were in the BIG in 2023 there would definitely be a path to getting two teams in. But in the PAC? That's as likely as Aaron Rodgers coming back this season.

Oregon Has an INSANE Backup Quarterback...
Babyjesus615 replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Should have called a dang timeout! Let Bo back in for the short yardage play. Watching him jump up and down on the sidelines next to Lanning wanting to go back in was more painful than his injury! -
Dan Lanning is SERIOUS About Michigan State?

He goes there and takes his staff with him!? Mark my words, within a few season the civil war game (or whatever they call it up there) becomes nationally relevant. -
Oregon Has an INSANE Backup Quarterback...

I'll say that Ty is looking much more comfortable this year than he has ever looked. He still has flashes of that robotic, deer in the headlights look we saw last year. But once he is settled down he looks like he is getting into a decent rhythm. I do think he needs to take command of the offense when he is given his opportunity and make it his. But Austin Novosad looks good and is learning fast. I was at the Hawaii game and he has some serious zip on his balls during warm up. I fully expect him to make a serious run at the starting job next year. -
C’mon…a New PAC Conference? Really?
Babyjesus615 replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Wouldn't surprise me if the end-game for these schools is to create enough noise this year to get one of the other power conferences (Big 12 or ACC) to eventually snag them up and end the Greek tragedy of the PAC once and for all. -
This article actually puts into words, pretty accurately, the struggles with the run game that we saw last Saturday. We saw Bucky be his normal shifty, explosive self, but had to work much harder to do it. I will give Cristobal his due, he did develop a road grating OL, which Klemm inherited and expanded upon. Without veteran leadership and knowledge (A'lique Terry's first OL coach post), I assume this is going to be a learn on the job season; we unfortunately cannot expect to see the same kind of production at the O Line as we've seen in past seasons. It actually speaks volumes about Will Stein's coaching chops if he was able to recognize the weak link and adjust the entire offensive play-calling scheme to compensate; and still get the rest of the team to pick up the slack in the second half!

Ducks Football: 4 Things to Watch for Against Hawaii
Babyjesus615 replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I find this a bit confounding because our receiving corps, on paper, should easily be top 10 in the nation. Additionally, all the talk in the offseason was how the Will Stein passing game was being tooled to take maximum advantage of our skill positions. And what we saw against TT was a game made much closer by the drops. I believe this was why our run game saw a noticeable drop in yards per carry. The receivers dropped balls, therefore more running concepts were implemented, which caused the TT defense to load up and dare Bo to pass. The one wrinkle that gave us an advantage in the 2nd half were the QB runs. This again opened up the passing lanes in much needed situations. However, the QB running to keep a defense honest doesn't help receivers catch balls any better. They legitimately seemed out of sync at times (which could be due to the hostile environment), and nearly all of Bo's deep shots sailed a tad too far (could have been amped by the energy in the stadium). I want to see our receivers being thrown open and then taking advantage of their skill against a defender to make the play. -
Ducks Football: 4 Things to Watch for Against Hawaii
Babyjesus615 replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The run game needs to at the very least triple the numbers that were put up at TT. This needs to be an absolute strength to be leaned on so that opposing defenses are forced to make sacrifices in coverage; which opens up the Troy Franklins, and Tez Johnsons of the team for chuck pass plays. Another thing that I'd like to see more control of, which was a huge factor in wins last year, is tempo control. We saw KD dial up the tempo when the opportunity arose and really hammer on what the defense was giving him. But we also saw him dial it back when necessary to chew clock. I believe there was a stat that showed the Ducks were the #1 team in the nation at scoring during the middle 8 minutes of the game (last 4 of second Qtr, first 4 of 3rd Qtr). KD even made mention of doing math on how many average opportunities an opposing team would give the Ducks to score, and would base his tempo scheme accordingly in order to pick up an extra scoring opportunity for the Ducks or to take away a scoring opportunity for the other team. -
If I were Phil Knight I would back the Brinks truck up to Lanning's doorstep and tell him to find whatever defensive staff he wants/needs. If Lanning truly had unlimited resources, his defensive coaching prowess coupled with staff strength would be giving off '85 Bears vibes. P.S. I agree with some of the sentiment about Lupoi. I want to see him actually earn the 6th highest paid DC in the nation salary. I haven't as of yet.

Barring some absolute major fluke of a performance. It appears Will Stein is absolutely a win of a hire by Lanning. Seems like he has a somewhat more reserved, quiet demeanor (similar to TT). Maybe that has helped him be more relatable in teaching the Xs and Os. I like Kenny Dillingham but he is just about the loudest, most animated OC Oregon has ever had and some kids just don't learn as well under that. Novosad looked confident out there as well. You could see him not hesitating to check the protection with his linemen. I have no doubt that with a season under his belt he will make a legitimate push to win the job next year. My confidence in how our QB room is shaping up for 2024 has started to really grow.

Agree. Autzen during a yellow-out game looks way better than any other color combination.

Ruh-Roh: A Bruin Brouhaha Beginning at QB?
Babyjesus615 replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I wonder how many times during his recruitment visit Dante was told he'd be the starter in Westwood. Now they'll play him his 4 games, probably spaced out during the season to try to keep him from skipping town. Honestly, did he not do his homework on how many times Chip Kelly has started a true freshman? DTR and that's because he had no choice.
