Want To Keep a Coach For the Duration of His Contract.
The coaches get their millions for coaching. If they get fired "for cause" then end of story. If they get fired for bad performance, then they are owed the balance of their contract mitigated by being re-employed.

Want To Keep a Coach For the Duration of His Contract.
Structure the buy-out as follows: If you leave before the end of your contract, your buy-out is the amount we have paid you on your contract, plus the amount we have paid the assistants that leave the program. So, if the coach gets 7 Mil per year and the assistants 3.0 Mil, then the buy-out is 10 Mil for every year of the contract the coach fulfilled. It won’t stop poaching, but it will make it hurt the suitor and benefit the jilted lover.

Interest From Unlikely Places...
I was never s big fan of his, but the way he handled his firing at UCLA was pure class.

I thought that was Jim Morrison and Utah

Was Mario Ever a Duck?
I think he was always going to be a Duck until the U came calling. Had Diaz beat FSU in their last game, they might not have been looking as that would have been 6 in a row. FSU giveth (took Willie) and taketh (Mario).

Unless it is Urban Meyer. If he was picked, I wouldn't support Duck football until he was gone. His baggage is land fill. Re Kiffen, I'd be Ok if he was nailed down for x number of years. This guy moves too much and may be eyeing a return to the pros.

Oregon AD Rob Mullens Unhappy with Miami: "Never Contacted"
That took a BIG hit with his "backdoor negotiating" with the U while it still had a coach. Plus, leveraging his on-the-table extension against both sides. Although that is the game all schools/agents/coaches are playing, doesn't mean just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean Cristobal had to.

Oregon AD Rob Mullens Unhappy with Miami: "Never Contacted"
Per Jon Wilner Representatives of Cristobal and Miami had been deeply engaged for weeks. Lesson, don't play poker with MC

USC is Getting Uncomfortable
Hey, how about Eric Boles ?????

Your Choice
We you rather lose Mario now, or as soon as the U job opened? It is clear now that Mario would jump as soon as it opened. I prefer now instead of a year or so after he signed the 8Mil/yr 10 yr deal. If the nucleus of the team stays and doesn't transfer, a good HC and asst hires will have a lot to work with. If they can't make it good in the next year or two, then we just struck out.

Players transferring
It's not football, but Isaac Johnson seems to be doing ok for Altman. Plus, some of these missions are directed for the student athletes to continue their training = two birds/one stone.

Oregon AD Rob Mullens Unhappy with Miami: "Never Contacted"
New low the way Diaz was treated. Per Pete Thamel Yahoo Sports ; What Miami did to head coach Manny Diaz on Sunday is the type of egregious mismanagement that happens when grand ambitions turn blind. To leave your football coach dangling for an entire day while you wait to potentially fire him — or maybe not — is a terrible look. A lot of people around college athletics were laughing at Miami on Sunday while feeling awful for Diaz, who twisted in the wind in a cruel fashion. He ultimately was fired Monday morning during a meeting with Miami's president. Before that meeting, Diaz didn’t hear from any Miami officials all day regarding his job, according to sources. He got a commitment from a player on Saturday. On Sunday, he got marched out to the plank for the world to see. Diaz’s buyout has been reported in the $8 million range. No one is going to shed many tears for him, but the whole thing was generally uncomfortable. On a pure, cold-blooded business level, Miami’s brashness and callousness also showed that the new regime at Miami doesn’t care about feelings. Judge that how you may. Miami has come to a sudden realization about how far behind its program is and the new leaders aren’t going to care about bad optics and hurt feelings. full article: https://sports.yahoo.com/miami-shows-newfound-boldness-in-pursuing-oregons-mario-cristobal-but-its-treatment-of-current-coach-manny-diaz-is-cruel-040909763.html

I Can't Blame Any Recruits From Backing Off Their "Commitments"
Realistically, unless Oregon was your dream school like most of us non "student-athletes" walk-on alums here, the recruits need to know who their coaches will be before signing their LOIs
-
Second De-Commit Just Happened...
Would have been worse if he waited until after signing day. That would have been disingenuous to the recruits and we would have to have released them from their LOIs
-
Canzano: "Oregon's Choices"
He hated modern day recruiting
-
Mullens: "My Phone is Blowing up"
And we get to enjoy those dreams becoming nightmares.
