I like the bit about the BYU national championship, but hat’s how it was done back then. If they still used that system in 2017 then UCF would’ve actually been the national champions and Scott Frost would be an unemployed championship coach instead of just an unemployed coach.

This is a nice story on MC. I can appreciate why he went back to The U, but I don’t have to like the circumstances behind it. I still think that this week is one that will overwhelm him. Good coaches take bad losses. However, losing a payout game to a FCS team is inexcusable when you have a talented roster. It shows that you didn’t prepare your team well. There are exceptions, of course. Like if you’re in your first year with unfamiliar players. This happened to Saban in his first season at Bama. It takes time to rebuild a roster. Now, to answer your question. I would rather be Jimbo, but only for this upcoming week. That’s because I know that MC will likely find a way to hand me a win.

That’s another thing Mario loves about coaching Miami. When the fans boo him it’s not as noticeable when there are only a couple thousand people in the seats.

EWU wasn’t a very good litmus test. The talent gap was pretty large. However, with all the Power 5 teams that seem to get beat by FCS teams every year, I was impressed that Lanning didn’t let them look past Eastern. They’re typically a good team every year. The always seem to be in the playoffs. The concern for next week is the fans. There was a lot off empty seats for a home opener. I expect to see a ton of blue in the crowd next week. BYU fans will be on a mission (pun intended). Like when Nebraska and Tennessee visited. Those guys took up about 1/3 of Autzen.

I think they’ll do it Monday morning if they’re going to fire him. My question is who are they going to get to replace him?

One thing Mario doesn’t have to worry about is his defense’s ability to communicate. It’s so quiet in their stadium that the players can talk to each other in a conversational tone.

I’m not worried about Dan Lanning or the staff. I’m somewhat worried about the mental state of the players. Mostly the ones from last year’s team. They’ve lost 4 of the last 5 by an average of over 30 points. I don’t know why it’s happened, but one blowout is problematic. Two or three is a trend. I expect that they’ll win this weekend, but BYU will be a good test of where the team is mentally.

Mario gets a wild hair from time to time and runs up the score. He put 77 on Nevada a few years ago.

He‘s becoming the Steve DeBerg of college football.

A few points on this as I thought the same thing. First, Bethune Cookman had 2 wins last season. They stink. Second, MC threw the ball 23 times vs. 42 runs. They completed 20 of those passes. BC’s pass defense is horrible. Van Dyke threw 16 passes and had around 200 yards and a couple of TD’s. Those are hardly the numbers he was putting up last season. He’ll be out of Heisman contention after the A&M game in 2 weeks. Third, he’s playing with another coaches recruits. I’ll be interested to see how he develops his own players in the future. He had his best season at Oregon with Helfrich’s players.
