The Kamikaze Kid

One of the things I got from the video was the team breaking down the thousand cuts mantra by position group. DBs calling each incomplete pass a cut, offense calling each first down a cut. We saw how he prepared the entire team to focus on winning the small battles throughout the game one well executed assignment at a time. He knew PSU was too good to be taken down at home by a few big plays. The game was tied 3-3 at half and yet OBD was clearly winning the individual battles throughout the half. Lanning kept his players focused on their own responsibilities and kept them from being distracted by 111.000 screaming fans. Before the game, the national consensus was that PSU was going to win but they were wrong. I feel the video gave us a peak behind the curtain as to why and that's good enough for me.

Every time I see a picture of Riley, he looks like a guy that has his accountant on speed dial. Every time I see Lanning, he looks like he needs to be reminded that he actually makes money at this. I think that difference is the difference in the culture that is set at both programs. I have heard all about Riley's $17 million dollar mansion but I've never heard a word about his coaching philosophy or even his love for the game or his team. With Lanning, I've heard about the zero star recruiting, playing to the standard, and getting 1% better every day. Lanning's love for the game, his players and team oozies out of him at every interview. After big wins like this week, he's so fired up and crazed the Wolfman would back away. I think that is what players like Bear, Evan Stewart, Jordan Burch and Bo Nix needed. They all came in with bad wraps and were given second chances to rebuild their reputations and rekindle their love for the game by a coach that brings that passion every single day. Starters don't portal out from the Ducks for a reason. Plenty have portaled in from USC though and that's just fine with me.

I think Cig is much like Kelly back in the day. He's created lightning in a bottle, has a system that works, his kids believe in him and is getting results. Lanning's team resembles tOSU or UGA in that he has 4-5 star players doing 4-5 star things. I expect Indy to be better than we think, the score to be closer than we think but in the end OBD's relentless drive to seal the deal will be too much. I also expect some Autzen shock to have an effect.

Indiana fans are on their boards down playing the noise level of such a small stadium. The BIG will find out one fan base at a time I guess.

You’d think intent would be the primary factor for a rule that has a word describing intent in its name.

That play to me shows the difference in coaches. Lanning seems to believe that you need to take the win from the opponent and Franklin seems to think playing it safe and staying inside the odds is the way to go. I must admit I’m more of a play it safe and staying inside of the odds type of guy. Lanning seems more like a Han Solo “Never tell me the odds!” Type of guy. The safer coach has a reputation as a big game choker and the wild one is the hottest name in college coaching. Go figure.

I've seen many plays flagged for targeting that seemed like incidental contact but the non call last night seemed like a text book example of it to me. Does anybody know how the replay booth could watch that in slow motion and say nope? That looked full force, head lowered for to create impact then crown to crown impact. If that wasn't targeting, then how does the less severe incidents get so regularly called? This call seems far from consistent.

What a game. Still on cloud nine but I'll try to focus on the task at hand. Surprises The run D is truly legit. #3 on the road and running is what they do but not last night. Wow is an understatement. The freshman are legit. Frosh DBs eliminating their passing game, leading team in receiving and rushing yards. Wow again. This portaled O line is legit. no sacks, dominated run passing and time of possession stats in that environment in first big game together. Another wow. Improvements I think a new RB1 and 2 have made themselves known. I'd like to see that become official. A couple self inflicted penalties from O line cost two drives, one to start the game, the other continued the late game momentum swing. Less of that please. A deeper D line rotation may have helped keep the game under control down the stretch. A minor flaw but I'm knit picking a third gripe. Overall an A+ effort by an A+ team in an A+ required environment. Well done Ducks!

The next Ducks vs Them may be Oscar worthy. Other than that , I have no words. What a game. I love my Ducks!

Fell asleep last night as the Beavs actually looked like a football team before the half. Woke up this morning and found out the Beavs are still the Beavs.

PSU may want to consult with Michigan and tOSU about how little OBD cares about their overwhelming home field advantages. After watching last years over the top Ducks vs Them from the Michigan game, I can't even imagine what motivational magic Lanning has come up with this time.

Backs sure aren't shy about reminded us that they're still there. Hope yours quiets down so you can think about other pleasant topics for awhile. Hoping today we all get to sit back and enjoy OBD sending some sad Lions back to their Sad Valley caves.
