Dillingham’s Offense: Four New Elements for Oregon
AllOregon replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Sure hope so as FSU stats are meh. It is widely accepted he did not call the plays at Auburn so harder to correlate that short stint. Though some reported Coach D was not happy with his role there, so implies his stamp was not on those results. I do buy that FSU talent was a mess, and even those recruiting rankings shown above ended worse as not all those guys stayed, especially given what Willie did to the program. I also hang my hat on seeing how many coaches wanted coach D with them, and former players saying he is their favorite coach ever. That is proof in the pudding for me. Everyone wants successful people around them. -
Justin Wilcox on Why He Turned Down Oregon...
AllOregon replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
All good thoughts, but I do not see Rob and Phil playing.a bluff game of chicken. If it was offered, it was meant to get JW. But unless I missed it, I still did not see JW confirm it nor substantiate the Friday and Saturday attempts. All stories I have seen still only point to Canzano as the source. And he missed badly on so many other items that I just do not fully believe him on details, until he publicly shares his source or substantiates it elsewhere. UO declined to respond to the story. In his interview with Canzano, Akili Smith said he would be shocked that JW turned it down and would not know why he would. And Akili clearly was in the middle of all this, and pushing for JW’s hire, and would have reason to be in the know. He very possibly was the leak of the letter but that is for another thread. There are so many possibilities. Like a verbal discussion of terms that says, “hey if we do this you cannot bring Coach A with you or we want this strategy instead or $ are X not Y.” If not a match, candidate says I do not want it that way, I want Z instead. University says nope, we don’t want your way, so both sides walk away without a formal HR university offer. Those formal state system offers have paper trails. Show me the formal trail or named UO admin. source then I will believe it, need more than a reporter who notoriously mis-reports stuff. -
Matt Prehm: UW Once Again Blaming Oregon for Their Lack of Success

15 of 17 (actually 16 of 18 if you count the obvious forfeit from them quitting last year’s game). -
Seven McGee In the Transfer Portal...but WAIT!

Great! Captain Dan wins his first recruiting battle, and on day 1. 1-0. -

I let this all sink in for a couple days, then evaluated my true inner opinion vs knee jerk emotional reactions by observing how I felt at the time when 4 different guys were actually reported somewhere in print to be the choice. Then how do I feel when dust settled. It all points to UO got the right guy. Lane- loved it at first. National shock hire to counter Riley. When Wilcox and Chip were in print has having been the choice, I had the “damn, what if we pushed harder for Lane” reaction. Then reality enlightened me that no way would PK nor the Board of Trustees approve his scandalous background for the UO/Nike image. Also not a guaranteed track record. He was never gonna be the guy. (Same goes for Urban but that was never gonna happen for any college team right now, though does not hurt to check on the situation; and even worse baggage.). Chip- when media reported it was done deal I did the OMG FML. Prayed it was a smokescreen leak. Still feel that way. Wilcox- see Chip. Although like Joey H, I preferred him over Chip. But as one poster said, Wilcox has the energy of Eeyore. He might be a worse recruiter than Chip. No thanks. Still feel we dodged a bullet. Lanning- thrilled at first. Then rumors of Wilcox back in mix/denial reports that a Lanning was the offer made me think, ok maybe I don’t want first time coach. Then more I pondered, my gut was saying, dammit here was our chance for a sky is the limit hire. I don’t wanna be stuck in reverse or neutral. How could UO have messed this up and we are back to a Wilcox hire (yawn- see Eeyore). Still feel that way. Conclusion: thrilled we got Georgia’s DC who is a recruiting monster and huge names in this sport wanted him on their team. That covers the HC angle for me. If UO did not get him and went with the other names, I would still have been kicking myself. But not vice versa. Lanning was and still is the one I do not want to be “the guy that got away.” There is my answer. Lanning. Edit: look at the current players who have publicly shared they are thrilled. Keeping that intact is huge. Doubtful the same player reaction comes if it was JW.

A- Especially after “adjusting the curve” given what Oregon was left with in terms of late timing/ability to groom a hire process (e.g. USC) and lock up’s of many options. Our reality of available hires was much less than people give credit for…The “ I woulda rather had Fickell or Matt Campbell…” those guys were not leaving for ANYWHEREright now given their situations. No team had a “choice” to hire them. So don’t hold UO accountable to have not hired them. Think back to the day Mario left. The betting odds were Wilcox, Chip, Sitake. UW had to settle on a 1 year HC at Fresno State. I am sooooo much happier we have a Lanning and not any of those. UO chose right on the concept of winning with monster upside vs choosing mediocrity with a local guy/re-tread. This comes with the cost of guys not staying a decade. But besides the Bama job, that is the new Reality everywhere. Was concerned on the head coaching experience, but not anymore given what every football person connected to him has said about his talents, relationship building, recruiting, X’s and O’s. Thrilled.

Huh? Let’s recap. 5. Bellotti - in college football Hall of Fame. Enough said. 4. Chip - 4 years and 4 BCS bowls including wins in Rose & Fiesta, and close call appearance in Natty 3. Helfrich - Rose Bowl win, a Heisman (yes it was his recruit not Chip’s), an appearance in Natty. After 33 wins in 1st 3 years, flamed out in 4th. Disappointment, yes. But a Failure, seems too harsh? Being honest, wouldn’t a big majority of teams sign up for those 4 years of results. 2. Willie - epic failure 1. Mario - Rose Bowl win, 2 Pac12 titles. 35-12 record. The 4-3 in Shortened 2020 was damaged by Pac12 covid approach and opt outs of many defensive studs. Failure? No. And Miami gave him $80M due to his successes. Underachieved? Absolutely. Those 5 coaches had 241 wins in 26.5 seasons (counting 2020 as a half) and only 2 of those were losing seasons. I think you are over-rotating on the word failure.

Quick Overview of Lannings Georgia D
AllOregon replied to The Kamikaze Kid's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Per ATC: “Mike Norvell, for whom Lanning worked at Memphis, tried to hire him away to Florida State before last season. And new Texas coach Steve Sarkisian took a shot at acquiring Lanning in January.” Georgia gave him $1M in raises to stay. He is in demand. -
Those LA studs absolutely value the Rose. Go back and look at the chatter after we beat Wiscie (again). Is a partial reason on the recruiting success over USC. And of course, a top stud has huge eyes on playoff/Natty. But to dismiss the Rose as a meaningless consolation or exhibition game feels either uninformed or straight from a jealous Husky forum post.

That’s fair. I’d amend the words in my Subject title above to have really meant the Oregon Machine as absolutely it is never one person, Rob included. My main point was Oregon’s current “leadership” (insert names here) has had a very successful decade+ run of successful coaches. 3 Rose Wins and 2 Natty appearances. We should trust they can do it again. Wil-LIE being the exception.
-
That is not the tally I have seen on the numerous forums, Twitter, etc. Quite the opposite.
-
The Rose Bowl win was January 2020, that is a fact. And the point was Mario did more than just “win a consolation bowl game, big whoop.” Just saying to include all facts.

No, the Rose Bowl win January of 2020. How soon we forget Mario and Rob got us another one recently. My point was Mario won more than just the consolation bowl game that was mentioned.
