Yeah, a couple of things I wonder about in CBB. 1. How Mark Few gets done what he gets done where he's at? 2. How Cal is still at Kentucky? I know they didn't hire him to create a minor league team for the NBA. The NC is all that matters at UK. Cal hasn't done that in a long time.

Yeah, Marcus is a great fit to fill in if Hurts goes out with an injury. They won't have to change the offense, a lot of the same abilities. Even if not starting, this is a good opportunity for Marcus.

Reminder that Vick had a live arm, one of the strongest arms in the game at the time (not always the most accurate). Both the QBs in the Super Bowl having running as part of the offense, giving their teams one more weapon the defense has to worry about. Nix got hurt running, but could have gotten hurt getting hit in the pocket just as easily. A lot of QB injuries happen when they are in the pocket or moving in the pocket trying to pass. Not necessarily advocating for a lot of running by Nix, QB should probably not be your leading rusher, but the RPO offenses that are being run now need a QB that is a threat. Nix certainly is that and it is one of the reasons he was so successful when he came to Oregon. The offense played to his strengths. My tendency is to run the QB enough to make the D respect the QB run. There have been times, even before Mari no O, that I thought the QB should have kept the ball more often in the read option and not doing so was making the offense run less efficiently. Oregon has almost always had a QB that is a good runner. Even our pocket passers, like Herbert have had the ability to tuck it and get some yards occasionally, though that was certainly not a big part of their games. And for me having a QB that can run is just exciting. Who didn't love it when Mariota took off and left D backs coughing in the dust behind him! But yes, if you have only one serviceable QB, keeping him healthy is a good idea too. I get that.

His time in the position is not a lot, but look at what he has done. 4 years playing in a program known for beating you with hard work and technique. Match this mindset with the kind of athletes Oregon can bring in. They thought enough of him at Wake to keep him on the staff there after graduation. He coached at Oregon under a head coach who is probably a better O-line coach than head coach. Players he coached rave about his preparedness and work ethic. They think this is a special hire. He was at Hawaii one year before going to the NFL, instead of coming to Oregon to work under Lanning and Klemm. That he was thought enough of by the NFL to coach on the D-line where he had no experience as a player or coach might say something about his ability. I said a week or so ago that in a few days we were going to be saying, "Ahh...what, who?" and then be saying, "Wow, what a great hire." Though many of us might be tempted to say we should have gotten someone more experienced, I have a gut feeling we are going to fall in love with this guy quickly. This is a Lanning kind of guy and so far that has proved to be pretty darn good!

Now if everything works right, OC doesn't miss a beat, new O line coach puts together some pretty good O line piece and they play well together, the portal additions to the defense improve the defense, either Nix doesn't get hurt or a good back up develops... then we could be right there in the thick of things. After all how far away were we last year, really 9 points away. Four more points vs. OSU, five more vs. UW or 4 and 5 less for our opponents. Then a win in the PAC championship game win. Boom we're in. If everything above works right, yes Oregon could go to the playoffs. And who knows what happens when we get there. Of course when does EVERYTHING go right?

What Are Your REALISTIC Expectations for Next Year?
OhioDuck replied to a topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I'm going to go with: 10-2 but there are some if's. 37-40 ppg P12 Championship, New Years Day Bowl, 2 losses won't make the play offs next year. I think the D will improve. Lanning has brought in some good talent ready to play in his system. The offense is going to be even better, with one possible hickup being the O line. If the new coach comes in and the guys gel together the O line can be really good, that still has to happen. Wins: USC, Utah, Washington Loses: OSU, just a feeling the Beavers are for real and going to be better than last year. Then there will be one head scratcher, at Stanford, At ASU, WASU... -

I don't know, have you ever made that drive on I 95 from the Maryland subs to Columbia SC. I'd much rather fly to Oregon. -
Oregon’s Offense Will Pick Up Where It Left Off
OhioDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The fourth quarter rest would be good for Nix, but also give more of a cahnce of development for others in the QB room. Give Ty a chance to run the offense with the full offense on the table when he comes in for a whole quarter, or if it's the freshman same thing. If Nix is going to run the ball, we have to expect him to occasionally get ding up some. One or both of the other guys have to be ready. Reps in practice are one thing, but you have to have real game reps to be ready when the time comes. -
New Takes on Harbor and Pleasant...
OhioDuck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Remember the handler may also have a lotto do with track. If he has the potential in track it looks like he has, he could be making a lot of money there and soon. With everything involved now in football, NIL, portal, NFL potential etc. you add track to that and Olympics, track endorsements (that's basically NIL should not get in the way of eligibility), it would be almost neglectful not to have someone knowledgeable to help guide you through all that. If it can pass muster with Mom, I think he's a Duck. BTW, take a look at some highlights of this guy. I know everybody is saying he is going to play offense, but dang this kid can play some D too. -
Mario Fires Josh Gattis After One Year
OhioDuck replied to DrJacksPlaidPants's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Needed at the U: Offensive Coordinator Requirements, leave your imagination at the door, be physical, play slow, let me repeat that play slow, no down field passing, no chunk plays... Must be comfortable with micromanagement of the head coach who doesn't really know what he's doing. If this frustrates you to no end you must be willing to leave after one season with a nice severance package. Any takers? -
Oregon’s Offense Will Pick Up Where It Left Off
OhioDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Great take Josh, thanks! I'm so looking forward to see what the offense holds, this looks promising. It was so good to see Oregon offense return, hope it gets even better. Agreed cartm25 the OL is my biggest concern. We have some talented guys coming back and coming in, but this group largely hasn't played together before. Hope they mesh quickly. -
New Updates: 5-Star Nyckoles Harbor Recruitment...Whew!
OhioDuck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Sounds like this young man has a plan and good priorities. Oregon has some things going for it. Excellent track and football programs and facilities, are probably better than any of his other offers. Michigan probably leads in academics, but Oregon is competitive with his other finalists. Can't imagine South Carolina has much pull other than the girl friend. Michigan's coach may not go this years, but seems to be eying an NFL job, Maryland is close to home, but just look around you in Eugene and then in College Park, where do you want to spend your next four years? I think Oregon has a good shot. -
2024 Football Recruits...Announcements, Updates (#1)
OhioDuck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I love this kid. Just happened to see some video of him browsing the other day and looked at more this morning. I don't know what his track times are, but on the football field this is the fastest linebacker I have seen in this class. He reads the play well, has great instincts and then is playing down hill to fill a hole, chase down someone trying to get to the edge or run down a QB or running back from behind. When he gets there he hits like he is 25 pounds heavier than he is listed. Only thing I haven't seen is pass coverage. With his athleticism I would think that would be a strength and he moved to line backer from safety too. This guy projects to cause a lot of havoc for opposing offenses in college. -
More and more the product on the field will mean more than the location. How many bigtime college football programs are in big markets? Georgia in Athens Alabama in Tuscaloosa Oklahoma in Norman Clemson in Clemson Oregon in Eugene Notre Dame in South Bend Michigan in Ann Arbor It seems to me the USCs' of the college football world are the exceptions, not the rules.
-
That would help on the football field to. Imagine him just exploding off the line then shifting into that extra gear that few others (maybe no one else) have. This guy has so much potential for big plays. The pressure that it would put on a defense, with Oregon's running game, the RPO's we've been seeing Stein is bringing into the offense and then the speed of this guy at tight end. Where do you even begin to try to stop that offense? I think track may be what really puts Oregon over the top with him. I'm sure Maryland has track too, they may even be good, but until last year I lived in Maryland and never heard anything about Maryland track. Everyone knows Oregon track though.

We'll see.

QUAAACK: Sheldon QB Brock Thomas is a Duck
OhioDuck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Absolutely understand your point. Yet, if he was offered a schollie I'd also trust that the coaching staff saw something in him the raters didn't. This kid's film looks really good, scholarship worthy. If you just watched him perform and no one told you he was 6' and 175, you'd likely think he was a 4* recruit. BTW there's a guy who has a live arm, accuracy, escapability and is a good qb runner and is listed at 6'1" but is probably closer to 6' in that school down south, who just won a big trophy in NY. Of course I think he was a 5* coming out of high school. -

OhioDuck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
This is a good pick up walk on or not. Remember Mariota was a three star recruit, Justin Herbert was a three star local kid. This kid has a live arm, is accurate and yes he is a really good QB runner with escapability off the charts. What he isn't is tall. Why do QBs have to be 6'4" or better these days? If he was 6'4" he'd be a 4 star. -
Oregon Football D-Line with Jordan Burch Commit
OhioDuck replied to Tandaian's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I look at those same numbers and think this guy is really good. What were they expecting the second coming of Jadeveon Clowney? That happens once in a life time. This guy was really good at South Carolina and I suspect will be really good at Oregon too. -
Transfer Portal: Players of Interest
OhioDuck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Everything I've heard about Burch, he will fit the culture just fine. We need talent on D now, develop culture guys for later and win now with guys like Burch. I'm okay with that.
