KPNW radio reported this morning that Cal has fired former Oregon QB Bill Musgrave as their Offensive Coordinator due to the poor performance of the offense. With 2 games left in the regular season Cal is not willing to wait for a change. Will Oregon look to make a change as well in their coaching ranks? With much more on the line, post-season-wise, probably not. Disruptions at this stage in the program are unlikely given the importance of these last two games followed by a bowl appearance. But I can think of one coach who may be looking over his shoulder (and his phone) at lot this month.

Tough Question: Are These the Right Defensive Coaches?
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Seems odd to be complaining about coaching in a season where Oregon, at 8-2 (a good record by any measure) is still in the Conference Championship hunt. It's the contrast that stands out so starkly. On the one hand Oregon fields an offense that frightens Offensive Coordinators throughout the country. On the other, a defense that Defensive Coordinators with any kind of passing game salivate over attacking. One can only imagine how eager Penix and his coaches were before the game started - ready to begin their destruction of O's backfield. Yes. Something has to change this off-season. Dan Lanning has a lot of work and a lot of thinking to do. -
You're on Charles! I like the Hop Valley Bubble Stash.

Per Canes Insight: 7 McGee at Miami Campus
Mic replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I wish the young man well but - why the heck Miami? It might be a sinking ship. Or at he least, it's listing to starboard. -
Well now I know why Bo was staring at him sitting on the ground. I saw that from the stands and have watched it at home on TV (recorded). Where were the Refs on that one?

Ducks vs Utah: Game-Prep Article Thread
Mic replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I gotta tell ya Steven I'm not feeling all warm and fuzzy about this one. After what happened last Saturday (with the Ducks -13.5) I wouldn't pay a hoot about what the oddsmakers are 'saying'. Kyle Whittingham isn't stupid and he saw our weaknesses - hell I saw them and I'm just a stooge sitting in the stands! -
You're not the only one wondering why Butterfield hasn't seen the field yet. We're trusting Dan Lanning to know what he's doing - but it's beginning to worry a lot of us. What happens if Bo can't go?
-
Understand. Agree. But isn't it the duty of the Head Coach (in conjunction with the O.C/QB coach) to make sure there's at least ONE good backup ready to go with the full offense and not just bland, no-risk handoffs? Clearly, UW seemed to know every play from TT was going to be a handoff to the back and they were ready and waiting. The falloff from Bo to Ty was like falling off a cliff. A high cliff. The backup's play chart looks like it has 2 plays. Still, I'm only asking the question. I don't blame the loss on this. The Pass Def is so dismal that O was going to be playing from behind most of the game. And they were. Then when they did get ahead, they couldn't stay there.

The Offensive player is always (?) awarded the catch if there's duel possession, right? Unless I'm wrong, they both had the ball.

I find this not so cheery but revealing news: College football rankings, grades: LSU earns 'C+' for road win, Oregon gets 'F' in Week 11 report card - CBSSports.com WWW.CBSSPORTS.COM It's time to grade the College Football Playoff contenders that shined and struggled in Week 11 I think this is a grade just about all of us would not find surprising. Pity, it's Oregon getting the F.

Ducks vs Utah: Game-Prep Article Thread
Mic replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
If you bump into him how about asking him (pleading if necessary) to give TT a man-to-man talk. Enuf with all this "strolling in the park, what's up fellas, mind if I sit this one out" attitude of his. The chance to play for the Pac-12 Championship and the honor of the whole team is on the line here! -
Wouldn't it be sweet if Ty Thompson, having to start the game due to Nix's injury, comes out playing like he means it? I wouldn't mind it so bad even if Utah whips Oregon (which they probably will, now) if Ty would just come out gunning, with fire in his belly. It's the least he could do for all the time and effort that's been put into his almost three years here at Oregon. Isn't it?
-
We know Utah smells blood in the water. We know Utah is a very good team and we know Utah beat us badly twice last year. If Nix can't play at or near 100% then Ty Thompson has to Man-up and bring whatever game he has to try and help his team win what's going to be a real tough fight. I'm not confident at this point that Lanning & Co. have him (or anyone else) ready. If I'm wrong I'll be the 1st to apologize to the FishDuck forum & fans. If I'm right, next Saturday could be a real ass-whooping at the hands of the Utes. And then there's the Beavers waiting for the leftovers.

There IS a Winner of the OBD Prediction Contest...
Mic replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Congrats to FG. I guess. -
But the question is why is TT (or Jay Butterfield for that matter) not ready to step up when needed? Remember, the Next Man Up mantra. What has Lanning not done, if anything, to not have a backup QB with 5-stars affixed to his name ready to lead his team when needed?

Last I read, the pyramids were built (however) very, very precisely and very nearly perfectly. lol But, I get your gist, I'm surprised the old chain system has lasted this long. It's almost like a work-place protection thing for the members of the chain gang! And sideline infractions: I'm surprised there hasn't been a system designed to detect foot contact or crossing over it by now. Same with ball tip crossings over the goal line.

No, I'm not speaking of the tough loss last night. I'm speaking for the lack of performance we've witnessed from our backup QB's to this point in the season. I know Dilly's the O.C. and (correct me if I'm wrong) QB coach. Not Dan. But what 'grade' do we give DL for what we all watched last night when TT finally got his chance, with the ball game on the line, to do .... almost nothing? Is it a lack of preparation, mentally and physically? This is not meant to be a personal attack on any of the men mentioned here, including TT. I would never attack a Duck personally - it's not our right or privilege to do that. I'm a huge fan of OBD and our HC & OC both.
-
Somehow I just can't see a 3rd year, 5 star 'Sophomore' playing backup to a true Freshman, no matter how good either of them really are. Something has to give.
-
Unless Bo decides he wants another year to prepare for the NFL, nobody knows at this point. I know a lot of guys on this forum are thinking D'ante Moore but realistically: 1) he isn't a Duck yet. and 2) He's just a HS'er with a lot of talent and 5 stars. TT supposedly had a lot of talent and 5 stars too. And, he's a few years older. But he's not looking like he's gonna work out. Not at this point! One of our best QB's ever was only a 3 star and you all know whom I mean. It has to be in the young man to want to compete with all he's got or it's all just numbers and stars and scouting reports.
-
All season long we've been puzzled by TT's performance, or lack of it. Just last week I speculated maybe it was because he was entering the games when the Ducks already had the win in-hand and was just in to protect the ball. Maybe he just needed to come in with the game on the line once. Well, yesterday he got his "shot" at trying to save the game from a loss and make a gigantic impact on the Oregon football program. He looked exactly like he's looked all season long - either disinterested or over-whelmed or completely ambivalent. What a disappointment for nearly everyone. No, we aren't blaming the loss on him - but I think we know now what to expect from TT and it's not what we all want.
-
With Penix being as good as he is hitting receivers, the only chance O had to stop UW was to get severe pressure on Penix and drive him out of the pocket. They were only able to do that a few times but when they did, his performance fell off. They just weren't able to do it consistently.

Yes there is a big problem with a shortage of good officials in HS and it bleeds up to the collegiate levels in all sports. I'm not sure why, we hear all sorts of reasons, but I'm pretty sure it's not just $$. I think it's respect and getting second-guessed by everyone including fans. We may be heading for the era of robotic officials. No, not entirely of course, but more and more based on camera angles and in-field sensors including the gear that players wear. Sorta sounds creepy, doesn't it?
-
Better than ours, that's for sure. I don't think they gave up 408 yards!. To our luck, the Beavers (while strong on Defense) are not so good on Offense. And if Bo's able to play anywhere near 100% O is not one-dimensional like UW. Our problem (besides being vulnerable in the Secondary) is we don't appear to have anyone who can come in and fill Bo's shoes in even a modest attempt to move the Offense.
