Exactly this. There is no excuse for not having some kind of metric to measure these teams at this point. Applying the basketball criteria… Notre Dame has a Q4 loss. Texas has one Q2 win, maybe. How are either of these teams in front of Georgia, who has multiple Q1 wins and and two Q1 losses? It’s a joke. Even just applying common sense to this. If playing on a neutral field, would Georgia be an underdog to ND? Absolutley not! They would be a multiple score favorite to win that game.

Great article. In most cases, I would agree that Oregon would would probably not be undefeated in the SEC. However, if they had the same schedule as Texas, they would easily run the table. Difficult to know who is really good with these unbalanced schedules.

I’m with you here. If tOSU loses to Oregon again, then I think the committee will push the second place SEC into the 5 seed slot. Both will likely have 2 losses and by pushing tOSU to the 6 seed, you can avoid the third matchup in the semis. Where this gets interesting is if Oregon loses a very close game to tOSU. Then the committee almost has to put Oregon at the 5 seed and you have that matchup in the semis again. The 5 seed right now looks to be the easiest path to the semis if they get Boise then the Big-12 winner. It may even have a small advantage over the 1 seed which seems crazy.

Whichever team gets the 5 seed is going to walk into the semifinals. They will likely have Boise at home in the first round, then the BIG-12 champ in the second.

I found a situation where Oregon ends up 4th. Highly unlikely, but it is there.

I will counter with the fact that ND essentially plays 4 G5 teams. Texas IMO is the biggest offender. They have only beat 1 conference team with a winning record and they got pounded by Georgia. How are they sitting at No. 3? Where I have an issue is with the thought process that Indiana is out of they lose to tOSU, but Texas can be No. 3 with essentially the same crap schedule as Indiana AND with a loss to the only ranked team they played.

There are so many issues, I am not even sure where to start; Unbalanced schedules, subjective SOS rankings, different number of conference games, etc. I still can't understand why we don't have a NET ranking like hoops. If you lose to Northern Illinois (Q4) that should have a significant impact on your chances. Also, a team like Texas that has only one conference win against a team with a winning record (Vandy) should be reflected in the rankings. Schedule should matter.

Seems like every year Oregon has some terrible Quad 4 loss in November or early December that impacts the bubble. Glad they escaped this one with a win.

The fact that ND is going to get in with their schedule is a crime. Throw in the fact that they have not won a major bowl game since the mid 90s, they should automatically be out for losing to Northern Illinois. I would be okay with a 3 loss SEC getting in ahead of ND. ND is going to get rolled, just like every year.

Evans looks fantastic so far this year. He is going to be a difference maker . Glad we were able to hang on to him.

If Oregon wins next week vs Wisconsin, does that mean they have clinched a spot in the CCC? If Oregon loses one of the next two games, I think they are still in: 1) Head to head tiebreaker vs. tOSU 2) Tiebreaker rule 3 with Penn State. Both would have 1 loss, but Oregon would have beat the higher ranked tOSU. 3) The result of tOSU / Indiana wouldn’t matter, it would just determine who Oregon would play. Is this correct?

How much have things changed with Lanning? Oregon played terrible tonight and still won by three TDs. I’ll take it. With Mario, tonight is a loss.

Every single year he loses to unranked teams while having arguably the best roster in his conference. IIRC, he lost to 6 unranked teams in 3 years at Oregon. They will probably still make the playoffs, but I don’t see them getting too far with his coaching. Side note - Lanning is now 23-0 vs unranked teams.
