Time to For the Big Ten to Adopt Las Vegas

Recommended Posts

It is time for the B1G conference to embrace the future, and that future is making Las Vegas the host of its championship game. It would go a long way in relegating the B1G’s squarish, midwestern image to the rearview mirror as it rings in the era of being a true coast-to-coast conference that embraces Hollywood, Broadway, and all points ...

FISHDUCK.COM

Darren Perkins of FishDuck.com believes the Big Ten should make Las Vegas the permanent host of their conference championship game.

As the saying goes, "What happens in Indianapolis stays in Indianapolis." That does sound ridiculous and as you say, Darren, it would be if the game isn't moved to Las Vegas in 2029. The Rose Bowl too, makes sense. B1G teams traditionally had no problem getting there when it was B1G vs Pac-8, 10, 12.

There's an episode of M*A*S*H when Radar is playing records, and Col. Potter insists he play "Sentimental Journey" by Doris Day, over and over and over. He plays it so many times that even Potter can't take it anymore. The memory of The Pick will stay with us forever, perhaps we should keep it there.

The new Pac 12 will likely be wanting to play their championship game in Vegas, so the B1G better strike now and secure a contract early. I'm sure they could play it on consecutive nights, just so long as they make the Pac 12 play on a solid green gridiron and then paint it up for the B1G. No sense in spending good money on paint for G6 teams.

Kenny Wheaton showed up on the 20th anniversary and the Ducks won the conference, the rose Bowl and went to the national championship game and lost. Maybe they're just trying to change the luck this time.

I think there has to be respect for the past, staying in the present, and still focusing on the future. That isn't an easy balance.

Wether that includes the BIG playing in the Rose Bowl, or Oregon bringing in KW is something that has to be decided based on all three focal points, but really moving towards the future if we want to stay relevant, reach our potential.

I tend to think moving on is an important step in any program, conference and isn't often easy. How do you respect the past, when you are focused on the present and trying to reach a hallowed future?

I can see how this program isn't so focused on that big step 30 years ago. We still hate the dawgs, but that interception was a step from a distant past program, nobody is really tied to that time. The slick, Mariø eras created a gap that is being filled with new highlights and traditions.

Same with the BIG, the Rose Bowl was left many years ago, to the Pac's detriment. I do agree focusing on the future should include Las Vegas, not just a continuation of Indy as the BIG's choice for game location. There is a new conference, embrace a new location for the game. The new commissioner has been in control of the decision making process for over a year, time to put his stamp on it.

The real danger is not looking towards the future and embracing that, those possibilities. It is easy to just roll out the old traditions and what has worked. I applaud Lannings Ducks going for what hasn't been done.

If Lanning does what he is trying to do I think even Kenny will be fine letting go of our previous obsession with The Pick. It is time to put all our focus on the now and the future, glad that is where the focus is. I look forward to all the possibilities the next step will bring! GO DUCKS!

It would make a lot of sense to rotate the B1G championship game between Las Vegas and a site in the traditional B1G footprint (where weather won’t be a factor).

If the $$$$ is there and Vegas wants it to happen.  Then it will happen.

Just wait till the "new" 16 teams playoffs just 24 months from now.  I'd be willing to bet (but of course) that "Vegas" will be involved in the playoffs rotations, somehow.

Go Quackers!

Could not agree more: It's time to retire the, "Kenny Wheaton's gonna score" rift. Whereas I once found it inspiring and thought I'd never tire of seeing it, I now find myself cringing when it is aired before EVERY game, as if it portrays the only moment of glory and the zenith of Oregon football. While it may have signaled the dawn of a new age, it is now tired and time to put it to rest IMHO.

As much as I like the idea of having a Championship Game within a couple hour flight. I still don't see it happening often.

To me a true "Neutral Field" should be equally as miserable for each fanbase to get to. Something like Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. You would likely get 20,000 true fans from each of the school's fanbase and another 60,000 wild locals. That would truly be a "Neutral Field"... But, that will never happen either.

I’m a Bear so The Play will always live in high profile lore and should never be put in the past. And not because the Bears are no better now than they were then but because Joe Starkey makes what it probably the single best call in television history.  Flat out loses his mind. That never gets old.

I think of The Pick the same way.  Amazing call.

But I understand there has been an evolution in the program and that moment probably doesn’t feel as seminal these days.

I can understand wanting to retire it.

Still the greatest call ever..."The Most Improbable Finish to a Football Game!!"

Bookended with the Civil War 2010 call...."Your Oregon Ducks are going to the National Championship Game"

These two calls, for me, are the perfect encapsulation of the Ducks' 15 year journey to prominence.

But, like Mac Court, some nostalgic totems are meant to be outlived.

I'm a big believer in the original PAC 12 plan where the "home" team hosts the conference championship games.  More so now as fans must make significant travel decisions for 4-5 post season games.

Having the top seed host the conference championship ensures a 100% fan turnout and rewards the team with the best regular season.  The problem is these conferences are so large now, that a huge advantage could be given to the top seed often determined by tie breaker and the top 2 teams are more and more likely to have not faced each other.

If the pac12 makes the first move I would hope the folks in Vegas have the foresight to put in a "big 10 exception clause" on how that conference would take priority. All about the money

Well, the Rose Bowl has always been in Pac12 land, so there is that. Big 10 fans didn't complain cause it's nice to get some sunshine. Where in Vegas u get neon lights!

Thank you, Darren. I think the B1G will opt to play the 2029 Football Champ in Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium in 2029.

2027 - Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena will host the Women's B1G CBB Tournament.

2028 - T-Mobile will host the Men's CBB Tournament.

Playing the football championship in Allegiant will not be the B1G's first visit to Allegiant. The B1G does play every other year in the Las Vegas Bowl in Allegiant. Last year NW upset Utah. I believe the current Las Vegas Bowl agreement between the Pac 12, B1G, and the SEC concludes in 2026.

There is an agreement in principle to play the 2029 game B1G football champ game in LV. Not groundbreaking; the 2028 B1G Men's CBB tourney will be played in Las Vegas.

I actually don't mind Lucas Oil Stadium this year. It's where DL won his national championship with UGA, so he's used to winning rings there.

I don’t like the idea of weather having a significant outcome on the game. That’s why the top bowls and Super Bowl tend to be in locations that reduce the probability that weather is a major factor.

I want the best team to win, not who is the best playing in adverse weather conditions.

Kenny Wheaton wasn't invited? Baloney.  He is always welcome, but Oregon simply didn't offer to pay for all his expenses to come wave at the crowd. Or maybe it was overlooked, not intentionally...after all--the Ducks have a little going on these days...

His feelings were hurt, Charles!!!! lol. He's gotten more than his fair share off of that play. Isn't there an insurance company in Eugene named "The Pick" ?

It would be great to move the B10 championship game to Vegas (or at least rotate between there and Indianapolis every year).  Other than OBD there isn't much incentive to fly to Indiana.....because it's Indiana 😴.

A lot of Hoosiers think that you are a Hoser! ☺️

Think Vacation? Doesn't everyone want to watch guys go round and round in a Brickyard and watch a game in a stadium named after an Oil Can?

Compared to the 'You can't get there from here State Pen(n),' this is a Pair-of-Dice. 😇

So, who needs Lost Wages?🤑

I'd like to cordially invite the Big Ten to bring their championship game down to the sunny and warm Phoenix Arizona area.

Nothing self serving about my invitation at all.
