Chip Kelly: Oregon Can’t Beat Us With 11, Only With 12

Recommended Posts

Chip Kelly has developed quite the backbone hiding behind Ryan Day, massive NIL, and all their 4th and 5th-year, 4 and 5-star players.

What an a$$hole!

Hey Chip - You’re right where you belong, as an OC, because you failed EVERYWHERE you’ve been, except at Oregon. Oregon made you, not the other way around!

Both Philly and the Niners have competed for/won championships before and after you were there.  You’ve left UCLA football in such a mess with your refusal to recruit, the program might never recover.

That nails it. I still want and think osu2 will beat Notre Dame, but this makes a ND win more palatable. A lot of time, games have gone by since "Scoreboard" Oregon beat osu2, why does Chip bring that up now?

Or what happened with the turd your offense laid against your arch rival who has absolutely owned you recently? How do you explain that one away?

Seems like Chip was pretty quiet going 0-5 against Oregon at UCLA and as OC at tOSU.

There also were some pretty credible rumors Oregon requested and received permission to talk to Chip about returning to Oregon in December of 2021 before instead shifting gears and hiring Dan Lanning.

Maybe that isn't it, but something seems to stinging Chip to be throwing out that comment two weeks after the Rose Bowl at a National Championship press conference. Chip, it's Notre Dame you are playing Monday.

^^^^this!

I was kind of shocked when I read that quote.  Chip, by and large has always been gracious about his time at Oregon and even after Oregon defeated UCLA he was publicly gracious. No ideas what he said behind closed doors but he apparently is now assuming the Ryan Day act of being rude.  Chip in the past was always above making comments like this.

Actually makes him look very small minded.

I assume he was asked about the Oregon loss……and for Chip anyway, it was a pretty good line, drew a few smiles.

Chip was asked by the media what was the team’s motivation prior to the Rose Bowl. This was his response. Makes perfect sense to me that a coach/team would use this line.

Or... You count the interception.

And Oregon wins by 8.

Or count a field goal... And Oregon wins by 5.

Don’t disagree in theory but this situation is clearly different.

Also can’t forget that Carlos Locklyn is part of the coaching staff for tOSU.  Something clearly happened with him at UO cause he left big mad. I know he asked for a significant pay increase at one point.

Also , and not to hijack this thread but it was interesting that none of the RBs that he recruited to Oregon left with him.  Not saying they didn’t like him but no one followed him.

Chip's a Boston (Manchester, NH) Irish guy. Busting chops is in his blood.

Hopefully, we'll see if Chip is correct on 12/6/25 in Indianapolis. Danno will, no doubt, save a copy or two of Chipper's take.  😁

The 12th guy on the field did not cause Chipper and Will Howard to brain cramp on the last play of the game. Perhaps Chip and Ryan should have known the rule and known that the clock would run once the ball was put in play.

BTW, hell of a slide by Willy Boy. 😎

Should I root for No ...? NO!

Adding a thought here about the rumors that were rife in December of 2021 about Chip returning, they were out their for sure but the bigger issue is MANY donors (not just the big ones) still connect Chip with the Willy Lyles episode and I honestly think there was way too much baggage with Chip.  Not only was there the Lyles thing but there were other big team discipline problems   and the fact that inside the HDC Chip was viewed as extremely difficult to work with.

i think it's funny.   not worse (or even very different) than Dan Lanning saying Colorado plays for clicks.....    Remember, Chip had 42 million reason$ to leave Oregon.

Well!  That did not take long for Chip to adopt the mindset that some Buckeye fans have; "We did not get beat by the other team...we beat ourselves or the refs beat us."

I have to assume that not only is he taking on that attitude, but he is also playing to the massive Ohio State audience. And I have to think that some of the things written about his track record since he left Oregon have stung him over the years, as he is a very stubborn and proud man.

Could you imagine Dan Lanning saying that in public?  No, as he has more class than that.

Sure builds things up for future games between the schools!

I didn't want Chip to come back. No doubt he was incredibly successful, but that was a time, circumstances that would not be repeated. What would be repeated for sure would have been Chip's complete disdain for recruiting. Osu2 recruits well enough that he doesn't have to do involve himself; that was a line that made him feel good.

That was a line for sure that made him

feel good but does not diminish his abysmal performance against Michigan.

If I am interpreting Chip Kelly's convoluted insinuation correctly, it is he is implying  that the UO won the first game by intentionally keeping12 men on the field.

However, our DB deflected the pass on that play. If there had been no penalty, time would still have run off the clock and OSU would have been 5 yards farther back.

DL's stratagem had little effect on the outcome that I can see, unless I am missing something.

I take JJ's point, but I am still annoyed at Kelly.

Ok, makes some sense. I didn't realize he was being interviewed by the same guy who asked Tommy Lasorda about Dave Kingman [from the files of dumb questions].

Warning:  Language!!

[Except Lasorda was probably a bit more gracious and good natured in his response]

LOL,

I stared a whole new thread before seeing this...

But my take is vital.  We need every exam known to mankind to fix our issues with elite teams.

My take on the posts here:  OSU basically took a key coaching move by DL and  used it as AMPLE MOTIVATION TO DEEP SIX OBD.

Nothing like a rivalry starting off as hot as tOSU/Michigan.

They already hate us.  That's good.  Another Blue Blood annoyed that we are coming for them.

As I said, if I know DL at all, he is going to scheme better than he ever has.  And personell doesn't matter as much as using the talent you have in hand.

If he was asked in 2021, there were probably a bunch of staff at Oregon cringing about the possibility.  Chip was an butt-hat to a lot of the staff, donors, fans, alums.  Early on I connected it to a different culture coming from the Northeast, but as years went by it was more than that.  Then, as he won games, he became even more obstinate.

Whether you love or loathe Taggart/Cristobal, they demonstrated Oregon could recruit to a Northwest outpost.  To me, that also diminished my interest in Chip returning.   Day did not add him to his staff to recruit.  As long as tOSU is successful that won't matter, but over time the rest of the staff may have some feelings about The Great One sitting on his butt in the football offices while they work the phones and hit the road?

He clearly prepared a great game plan for the Rose Bowl.  But, he had the advantage of very skilled players too.   Something he didn't have when going 0-fer at UCLA vs Oregon.  How many of those Buckeyes were delivered to the roster by Chip?

As for taking a shot at Lanning, so be it.  But, it had to really rankle Chip that it was a Lanning decision that got the publicity rather than Chip's offense.  The Buckeyes have gone 3-fer against Tennessee, Oregon and Texas.   They deserve their spot on Monday and Chip gets a piece of the credit.   But, that OSU defense has been under-rated all year.  At this point the two Oregon games are still the highest score by opponents in 2024 season.

Interesting take.

If it's true that position coaches matter most to recruits, does it really matter?

Chip is a football genius that doesn't relate to inflated egos that much (I'm with him on the egos, I can't stand hyped up (and relatively) grade schoolers).

Chip changes the entire game of football.  Chip is damn near the Vince Lombardi of College Football.

The media age (social media that is) inflates egos and fosters many a delusion.  So as CEO I wouldn't mind my coordinators spending more time finding ways to carve their elite opposition rather than hunt down too many maybes.

Just my take.  Recruiting should be for those that really want to deal with the kids.  You can build relationships with them when they are on your team.

Well I certainly hope we don't become the distasteful blue blood when we get there.

It already shows some in the Athletic Department.  Some believe they're too big for 'the others'.  Reminds me a bit of The Outsiders.

Not to mention, some kids can never relate to being humble as we Grey Beards know all too well.  It's a blessing to be a contender.  Not too long ago we were just like Oregon State and WSU.  And we'd have been looking in the outside in if Rich Brooks hadn't  worked his butt off and learned what he needed to learn.

I believe Chip was the defacto position coach for QB at most of his major college stops?

2007:  Dennis Dixon

2008:  Jeremiah Masoli

2009:  Jeremiah Masoli

2010:  Darron Thomas

2011:  Darron Thomas

2012:  Marcus Mariota

2018:  Wilton Speight

2019:  Dorian Thompson-Robinson

2020:  DTR

2021:  DTR

2022:  DTR

2023:  Ethan Garbers

2024:  Will Howard

Not exactly a Hall of Fame list for NFL consideration, but got what he wanted out of them in college.

My take is that to the victor go the spoils and that revenge is a dish best served cold. And what Chip said was cold. Funny, but cold.

DL may have shown more class, but then again, the Colorado "clicks" comment was pretty frosty.

Who knows what might have shown up in the Ducks vs Them segment had Oregon won the RB. Could have been a little salty as well but we'll never know as the footage is probably buried deep in bowels of the HDC.

So this whole thing is just part of the game and a rivalry is joined. It hopefully will just make OBD better and more determined going forward.

CK was like a fad. Once teams learned how to defend his offense, it became obsolete. I don’t see any top teams running the spread-option offense.

In contrast, Bill Walsh revolutionized the game of football with his West Coast Offense concepts that are still used today at every level of football.

Where I'll disagree here is that DL's comments were before the game, not months afterward. If Colorado had won, DL would have definitely had some explaining to do. As it turns out, how wrong was he?
