When To "Take The Points?"
That play to me shows the difference in coaches. Lanning seems to believe that you need to take the win from the opponent and Franklin seems to think playing it safe and staying inside the odds is the way to go. I must admit I’m more of a play it safe and staying inside in the side of the odds type of guy. Lanning seems more like a Han Solo “Never tell me the odds!” Type of guy. The safer coach has a reputation as a big game choker and the wild one is the hottest name in college coaching. Go figure.

We really need to have Allegiant Stadium be one of the bowl sites for the playoffs.

Our Beloved Ducks: Is it SAFE to Dream?
I respectfully disagree. I think they are BETTER than last year. They are shedding blocks better and applying pressure better. The whole defensive line last night did incredible. Bear read a play perfectly where he dropped to cover a runningback as an passing outlet while another rusher applied pressure to Allar. The ball was thrown badly and resulted in an incomplete. The teamwork seen this year so far on defense has been superb. And when the team plays well together all the pieces shine. Also... Talk about that secondary. Only a few breakdowns but didn't hear too many names getting called out last night which meant they did their jobs. Which meant the pass rush could I theirs.

A Targetting Question
#1 Because the player made a football move he wasn't defenseless, despite the fact he was been restricted by another tackler. This is a major oversight of the rule that can and should be fixed. #2. The region of his helmet that made contact was just outside of what is considered the crown of the helmet per the current rule. On a reddit game thread evn the PSU fans were asking about why it wasn't targeting. The rule is still a work in progress and I expect the Ducks football program is going give the B1G offices heck for fixing the rules so players don't get hurt in this situation that clearly meets the intent of what the rule is trying to prevent, yet rules it acceptable.

When To "Take The Points?"
Dan Lanning had the attitude that he was playing with house money. Penn State had the returning stars, the bye week and the “white out”. I think his thought was if Oregon is going to steal this one then he needed to take some chances and make Franklin coach all four downs.

A Targetting Question
I've seen many plays flagged for targeting that seemed like incidental contact but the non call last night seemed like a text book example of it to me. Does anybody know how the replay booth could watch that in slow motion and say nope? That looked full force, head lowered for to create impact then crown to crown impact. If that wasn't targeting, then how does the less severe incidents get so regularly called? This call seems far from consistent.

When To "Take The Points?"
I believe two things in regards to this... 1) We've lost more games by NOT taking the points, than the reverse. Granted it is not many losses under Lanning, and not recently, but the stats are the stats. 2) It does not matter what I think; Dano is going to continue to go-for-it, and the players love it.

Week 5 AP Poll
I watched a full Ohio State game yesterday for the first time. They are good, but certainly didn't look unbeatable. The Huskies gave them everything they wanted and more for much of the game and the Huskies ain't the Ducks!

When To "Take The Points?"
I vocalized my frustration when Dan didn't opt to take the FG on 4th and 2 while up 7 and with our defense thus far playing lights out. I imagined Charles yelling at his screen "TAKE THE D@%$# POINTS!" Then when Davison walked into the endzone I of course had to jokingly tell my family I was just kidding... Anyway, @Charles Fischer I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this and if it changes your mindset at all. I would have taken the 3 points, but in hindsight that might have very well cost OBD the game...

Week 5 AP Poll

Our Beloved Ducks: Is it SAFE to Dream?
It is indeed safe to dream. I think everyone figured that OBD was a year away from NC contention due to the NFL losses and youth of this team. But looking at things five games in, a few takeaways: DL..Lost Harmon, Caldwell and Burch to rounds 1-3: So far Bear, Amari, Green and Grey look pretty darn good, Matayo and Tatum are as good as last year with Purchase added to the mix LB..Lost Bassa: Mixon has upped his game and battle-ax Bryce has the green dot in the middle DBs..Lost nearly the entire secondary: Would anyone argue that Theinemen, Canady, Flowers and the Fantastic Frosh aren't an upgrade? OL..Lost Conerly and Cornelius: Pancho anchoring 'newbies' World, Harkey and Pregnon have avoided the growing pains from 2024 WR..Tez (and Evan S) gone: Add Benson and a healthy Bryant. And, ahem, Dak. TE..TFerg and PHerb moved on: Jamari J and Sadiq, Sadiq, Sadiq! RB..James to the NFL: More Fantastic Frosh in Hill and Davison, a better Lamar and Noah. Enough talent that Hughes is a depth chart afterthought QB..Lost Dillon G to Cleveland: Dante. 'Nuff said Have I left anything out? I don't want to gulp the kool-aid, but nearly every question about why this team would take a big step back in 2025 is being answered. Yep, it's ok to dream.

Week 5 AP Poll
How is LSU still 13? They have failed to score 21 points against any FBS school so far this year. They have a loss, but probably should have two. Their offense is tragic.

PSU "White Out" - Just The Facts
Btw, the whiteout really fires up the crowd. It would be like us doing "Shout" every quarter. The fact they haven't won more often is a reflection on their decisions to use this against best opponents. However they were on a current 6 game winning streak. Now they will need to start a new streak. 😁

PSU "White Out" - Just The Facts
Ncaa rules state home teams wear darker uni unless visiting team ok's a change. An example from this year, Tulane wanted to wear an all-white uni against Northwestern at their home opener to remember hurricane Katrina. Northwestern proudly (and wrongly) declined.

Week 5 AP Poll
Oregon is No. 2 in the Coaches poll as well. I would LOVE to see this No. 1 and No. 2 remain this way until the end of the season. Can you imagine how seeing two Big-10 teams at the top of the polls grates on Paul Finebaum? Who is sucking lemons?

What Were You Surprised By? What NEEDS to be Improved vs. Indiana?
Surprised a little by how well the D-line held up against the PSU rushing attack, but Bear Alexander had a coming out party. The rest of the interior was solid with good if not great LB play. DBs shut down the WRs for the most part and except for the TD by #8 against Theinemen and a couple of risky but successful heave it up throws by Allar, took away the easy routes and chunk plays. Surprised a bit, and thrilled, that Tosh's schemes nullified much of what PSU was trying to do. Nothing the offense did was surprising, but ecstatic that the Duck O-line spent almost three quarters either having their way or playing straight up against that good Penn St front seven.with few misfires as a result of the hostile crowd. And Dante's performance was all that and a bag of chips. I am less worried about what Indiana will bring into Autzen in two weeks than I was after that Illinois beatdown. They are good, but OBD's better. DL, TL, WS and staff will have two weeks to dissect apart how Illinois screwed the pooch and counter what Indiana was so successful at against them and Iowa. I think Mendoza will get rattled by a steady diet of Matayo and Tatum in his grill and Bear on a mission of mayhem up the middle.

Our Beloved Ducks: Is it SAFE to Dream?
Congratulations to the players, coaches, staff and fans. Special kudos to those whose clutch plays preserved the victory: Dante Moore, Gary Bryant, Dillon Thieneman. Tip of the hat also to the opponent, who mounted a gallant comeback, and whose QB deserves more recognition and fewer catcalls. However, I could not escape the feeling that the Ducks had the game under control and nearly let PSU steal a victory after the U of O had outplayed them for three quarters. Thieneman accepted blame for the long pass play. I could not tell on TV, but it looked from the angle provided that he was still playing closer to the line of scrimmage than was prudent at that point in the game. The penalty for unsportmanslike conduct was inexcusable. I thought at the time that it would cost us the game. DL attributed PSU's late success running the ball to Xs and Os. He knows better than I, but it looked to me as if Oregon's defenders were getting blocked because they were tired. EAse to say, that more sbustitutions ought to have been made early, because Oregon was struggling on offense, but perhaps DL ought to have substituted more in the first half. Yes, there is reason to hope, but Oregon needs to learn how to finish games.

Week 5 AP Poll
It's a long way to the finish line, but if the PO committee's final ranking on 12/7/25 mirrored the AP Poll, OBD's reward for finishing 2nd would be a 2nd round matchup vs. the winner of No. 11 Texas Tech at No. 6 Texas A&M in the COTTON BOWL in Dallas, Texas 🙃. Compare this with Miami playing the winner of No. 10 Alabama at No. 7 Penn State in the Orange Bowl in Miami. 🤬 For as long as this so-called 'Playoff' incorporates the 'NY6 Bowls,' a lower seeded team(s) will have more favorable 2nd round sites than one or more top-seeded opponents.
