Bo Nix - Our Second Heisman Winner?

Recommended Posts

Win two games left before the Heisman vote, and Bo Nix firmly in the lead to win the award, it's time to start taking the probability of Bo winning seriously. As you all know he would be only our second winner ever after Marcus Mariota.

I watched the video below from Joel Klatt who discussed the Heisman voting process.

It is a ranked choice vote, so it isn't just the person at the top of the ballot that matters for each vote, it is getting on as many ballots as possible as high as possible. Joel discussed the "southern vote" and explained the reason Christian McCaffery didn't win the Heisman was because the southern voters intentionally left him off of their ballots completely to make sure Derrick Henry won. Joel also speculated that Bo would not be harmed by the southern vote because he is from Alabama himself.

I think one other thing in Bo's favor is the sheer number of games played during east coast viewing hours that keeps him in the spotlight. Note this article below on McCaffery:

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM

Christian McCaffrey doesn't really care he finished second in Heisman voting -- but he can only laugh when he thinks about a potential reason why.

Bo wont have that problem.

I think Bo is in a great position to win the Heisman at this point. Certainly as long as he doesn't have a "bad game" with OSU or UW it's his to lose.

As long as he plays the next two games anywhere remotely close to how he has played in every game this year, the Heisman is now his.

And I cannot ever remember seeing a first half performance in a college game like he had yesterday. Ever.

According to some of those east coast pundits, that quarterback from LSU is going to win it even though his team has lost three games. One list had him way down the chart. If the award is about leadership, game management, maturity and consistency he should win it hands down.

McCaffrey not winning the Heisman was borderline scandalous imo. 8 years later he is talked about as the Heisman race heats up. He has been a topic of the Heisman since 2015.

This bodes well for Bo. Nix has been a household name, regardless of success on the field, since his freshman year. Especially in the south.

I think everyone, including Bama fans are rooting for the guy. Bo Nix is a great story. He is a great QB and has the numbers on an elite team to support a Heisman win.

Dude is probably the most consistent QB in Duck history. I don't see the Ducks having a let down this season aside from the Tech game. Win the next 2 games and go get your trophy Bo. Then go out and win the whole darn thing.

McCaffrey was over-the-top totally screwed by powers that be.

And thank goodness that Mario (MC-land... Where QBs go to die) wasn't around to do his best to attempt to ruin Bo, him like he tried to do to Herbert.

I doubt that Bo would have transferred to Oregon, if Mario were still the coach.

Absolutely agree.

For some reason on my part, I just felt the need to throw some trash talk toward Cane fans and Mario 😉

1 QB Is Clear Heisman Trophy Favorite After Today's Performance

Bo Nix's Heisman campaign just got even stronger with Saturday's massive six-TD performance against Arizona State.

The Oregon QB was on another level in the 49-13 win, completing 24-of-29 passes for 404 yards and a half-dozen scores both through the air and on the ground.

Nix's day was certainly enough to sway the public who couldn't stop talking about it on social media.

"Bo Nix is going to win the Heisman Trophy ... The dark horse for heisman jokes came true," College Football Report cried...

At this point only a loss to either OSU or another to UW can probably intervene in Bo winning the award.  At least it looks that way.

Nothing's ever a sealed deal with the committee making the choice - unless there's a player in contention from Oklahoma, Ohio St or Notre Dame.  At least it seems that way sometimes.

Bo Nix tied at top of Heisman Trophy betting odds; Michael Penix falls to 3rd place

Over the next couple of weeks, a major debate is going to be had when it comes to the race for the Heisman Trophy: How important is winning games when determining who gets the award?

Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix is considered the leading candidate according to most people that you would talk to. His stats are elite, and his team is 10-1 with a really solid chance to make it to the College Football Playoff.

Meanwhile, LSU Tigers QB Jayden Daniels is putting up stats that are slightly better than Nix, though his team has three losses and no opportunity to play for the SEC Championship Game, let alone a CFP spot.

So how important should winning be when factoring all of that out?

It’s a solid question and one that I’ve done a lot of research on over the weekend. I will have a column come out regarding that topic early this

week, specifically looking at Nix and Daniels.

Until then, though, here’s a look at the updated Heisman Trophy betting odds, courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook...

Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix has been tied at the top of the Heisman Trophy betting odds after Week 12 of the season.

I can remember some halves where Oregon gutted a team pretty bad.

But I'll say this... I can't remember a half that Oregon gutted a power 5 team and make it took effortless.

They were so smooth and fast that they didn't seem to be breaking a sweat.

Also having a good defense goes a long way to offensive production.

I would normally think that Bo winning the Heisman would tick off the Auburn fans, but they’ve got enough things to be mad about right now. Like getting their teeth kicked in by their week-12 cupcake they scheduled as a warm up for the Iron Bowl.

Heisman Watch, Week 12: Bo Nix rises as the competition fades

Did Bo Nix do enough to lock up the Heisman with a bravura 1st half performance against Arizona State that included roughly 400 yards and 6 touchdowns?

Or did Jayden Daniels do enough to remain in the competition?

Week 13 should be very interesting.

Here is a look at the current Heisman odds and how the current top 10 contenders performed in Week 12…There are so many write-ups this week supporting Bo and the Heisman!

It's unfortunate that Kenny Dillingham doesn't have a vote.  He thinks Bo should be the winner.

This award is voted on by humans and I don’t think those humans can overlook JD’s rushing yards. If LSU didn’t have him they would probably be a 3 or 4 win team.

Bo made a rather decent ASU defense look very slow, and like perhaps like they had been out on Mill Street Friday night doing tequila shooters.

Bo was like a football quarterback master surgeon on Saturday as he skillfully and methodically filleted ASU wide open.

But that's where the surgeon metaphor ends, because he certainly didn't put them back together. 🙂

I'm sure the committee, if they're honest, will take into consideration that Bo has run up the stats even when sitting out a lot of minutes in games when Oregon was well ahead.  Like yesterday.  He could have had 8 TD's if he'd had to stay in the game.

Unlike Daniels, he didn't need to be in all their game to the end for them to seal the win (or loss).  Daniels and Penix both have probably played a game or two's worth of minutes more than Bo.  I don't recall Williams sitting many minutes out either.  Just saying.

Bo’s Heisman chances are being hurt to some extent by Oregon’s exceptional defense which has created such lopsided wins that Nix has had to grind clock and has been pulled very early from 6 of 11 games played so far.

This is pretty funny.

Yeah Oregon gave up more points to ASU than Washington did but Oregon was able to pull its starters very early in the 3rd.

Washington needed its starters for all four quarters and didn't score an offensive touchdown.

Nix had... 6 TD passes!!!!

Not to mention 59 straight starts come Friday.  That's a record that will likely never be beaten unless the NCAA starts adding lots more games to the CFB schedule.  What a QB.

How this will go down isn't by committee, nor before the Pac-12 championship game. The pundits from each region vote, previous winners, and one fan vote, a little less than 900 votes. The next two games will decide if Bo wins or loses it.

LSU has one game to impress the voters. Bo will have two games, one against a leading contender which will probably have the largest impact. If he wins against the dawgs, and Jayden doesn't get to put up any numbers that should have a positive impact for Bo as the voters turn in their ballots.

Basically it is all in Bo's hands, and the hands of his receivers. I do think Bo has earned a trip to New York, when he stands up is the only question for now.

The Heisman Award candidates are in a week to week, very fluid revolving door situation......

With a great deal of subjectivity amongst those casting votes. Or at the whim of the Southern voting block. WTH........

Some voters can reward a,QB who elevates a average team to a winning season. Like Daniels for LSU.....

Those same voters can down vote Bo because the cast around him is so talented and deep. Does he elevate the team around him?

How many voters saw all the candidates play?  How many voters know Bo played less than 75% of the game.

If the voters cant see and recognize how special Bo is then this award is empty and hollow.....

For this fan the Heisman has been an empty award for a popularity contest...for others it has value and place value to it!

What matters is the Duck team winning big. First the Beavers, then the huskies.

The rest will take care of itself.

Go Ducks! Go Bo beat Beavus....

All eyes in FBS will be on Friday’s Uncivil War and then on the P12 championship.

Bo will have all the stage he needs to show voters his dominance.

The “Southern Vote” will have every reason to get on the Alabama boy’s hype train.

All Bo has to do is the same thing he’s been doing week in and week out this season.

And… throwback to Mariota’s final Civil War, which required his last minute heroics to beat Sean Mannion’s Beavs in order to make it to the P12 championship to avenge our only loss, to AZ.

Mariota earned the Heisman and a CFP invite that year, and OBD look waaaaaaay more dominant this year.

Just checking the odds as of right now, Jayden Daniels is actually a slight favorite right now.

As Heyward Duck said, the best thing going for Bo going forward is a Conference Championship while JD sits at home. The recency bias alone could majorly swing the contest in Bo's favor.

All this presumption extrapolates his performance and the Ducks performance going forward.

Going out on a limb here, if he keeps throwing more TDs than incompletions, he wins.

Southern voters shafted McCaffery and with Daniels in the mix playing for a 3-loss team they will likely do the same to Bo.

Daniels had a great game Saturday versus Georgia. Er, Georgia State. Hopefully, LSU's win over TN will not be a top-25 win come Tuesday.

The AP ranking 4-loss TN and not 3-loss NC State is senseless but at least AP voters had the good sense to move UW ahead of FSU.

I don't know about the southern vote. Which is better, a west coast boy who portalled to the SEC or a southern boy who portalled to the west?

Definitely seems difficult for voters to understand stats that have a different denominator (minutes played) as well as understand the difference it makes to have a QB that calls his owns plays to have the best play against each defensive look every single down.

When McCaffery lost the Heisman to a Bama RB whose OL should have won the Heisman, one-third of southern Heisman voters did not have McCaffery in their top 4.

Most of the voters from Dixie do not watch Left Coast football. Others will view Bo as a traitor.

Bo needs to ball out the next 2 games, LSU will not be playing in a conference champ game and this should help Bo, assuming a Civil War win, with the P5 spotlight on the Pac-12 champ game a week from Friday. It will also help Bo's cause if a very good A+M D show up against Daniels and holds Daniels under 300 pass yards and 100 on the ground.

East Coast bias may not be all that it is made out to be but SEC bias is 100% real.

Bo now has a big line to go against, -14.5, in the Civil War game. LSU the highest-ranked 3-loss team is -11 vs. the Aggies.

Bo and DL will be making a visit to NYC. But Bo is more focused on winning the next 2 games and getting into a hotly contested final 4.

Michigan is -4 vs. Ohio State. FSU -11.5 vs. UF. Texas -13.5 vs. Texas Tech. OK is -12.5 vs. TCU, with OK St. -17.5 vs. BYU. Ducks fans should be cheering the Cowboys on. It would be far better for Bo and Oregon if OK St., or K St, played Texas in the B12 champ game rather than a rematch of the Red River Rivalry game.

And a Texas Tech win would be playoff-perfect for Oregon.

Go Ducks! Dam the Beavers.

College Football betting futures and odds: Jayden Daniels overtakes Bo Nix as Heisman favorite

Bo Nix spent the days leading up to Week 12 as the favorite to become the 87th Heisman Trophy winner until another outstanding performance from Jayden Daniels boosted him past the Ducks QB.

While Daniels has the advantage across the board statistically, Nix has the opportunity to wow Heisman voters with a Pac-12 Championship and College Football Playoff berth, while 8-3 LSU has no hope for postseason glory.

The Heisman race will come down to the end, with Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels presenting strong cases to win the prestigious...

Column: In the Heisman Trophy race, how important should a win-loss record be?

In the world of sports, and in college football particularly, that question seems to have an obvious answer. Winning is the most important thing.

Winning keeps your team alive. Winning puts fans in the stands. Winning separates the haves from the have-nots. Winning is the one single measure of success that matters at the end of the day.

Why shouldn’t that be the same thing when it comes to the Heisman Trophy conversation?

As we enter the back half of November, and the talk surrounding conference championships, bowl games, the College Football Playoff, and yes, the Heisman Trophy, starts to heat up, this is a debate that is only going to get louder, so prepare yourself.

With just three weeks until the most historic piece of bronze hardware is given out to the “best player” in college football on December 9th in New York City, we seemingly have our finalists for the award set and ready to go.

Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix. LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels. Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr...

All three players have had historic seasons, and all three can easily possess the argument that they’ve been, at times, the best players in college football.

The stats are there. The “Heisman moments” are there. The flash, and glamour, and fan adoration is there.

Is the winning there?

For two of them, the answer is yes...

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

When deciding on who wins the Heisman Trophy, taking win-loss record into consideration should be just as important as overall...

Let's face it, the Heisman is largely a QB beauty contest. Unless there is one undeniable winner, like Marcus in 2014 or Burrow in 2019, there will be regional (meaning not west coast) bias in the voting.

Victories do seem to count. If Bo continues to play the way he is playing and Oregon wins out, then the odds are he will win it regardless of any gaudy numbers put up by an SEC QB against late season cupcakes.
