Is the Civil War Rivalry Dead?

Recommended Posts

A rivalry is a special thing in any sport. They are a mixture of love and hate: love for one’s team and loathing for the opponent. They take years to develop and true rivalries form when both teams win and lose in close to equal measure. For much of their history, Oregon and USC didn’t have a rivalry — or ...

David, you are a much better man than I, but that is a low bar.

I will not feel sad about it...for many years.  Their fans will keep that fire alive for me...

B1G time programs do not go on the road to play G5/6 schools.

Thanks, David, in a CFB world of Super conferences, some rivalry games return, Texas vs. Texas A+M, and others disappear, Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State.

Last Saturday's game in Corvallis cost Lane County between $6-8M. It meant no parking fee, concession, merchandise sale, and food and beverage income for Oregon. It meant giving up a game vs a P4 opponent in Autzen and playing no P4 opponent OOC in 2024. It meant not matching the 8 home games both Ohio State and Michigan play in 2024. It meant going out of UO's way to play a team that ruthlessly blamed Oregon for its failure.

The cost of football operations is increasing and scheduling must recognize this. Five conference away games in 2025 mean trips to Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers, and Seattle. The 2027 schedule has Oregon playing only six home games with games scheduled to be played in Logan, Utah, and Waco, Texas. This is Cents-Less.

If Oregon State is willing to come to Autzen for a game every season for a reasonable payment, fine. However, new rivalries await in the B1G, including recognizing UWho as Oregon's true rival.

Oregon State went toe to toe with OBD. "Failure to execute" resulted in a close 35-point loss. Right? Bray-On.

As a fan the games OBD's play OOC have to be interesting and have a purpose.

To me the Ducks need a P-4 OOC HOME GAME..........a game with the ACC or BIG12 would be of more interest.

If we must play the Beavers then the game should be in Eugene. Our AD needs to schedule 8 home hames a year.

GO DUCKS......

In an average year, we will play 3-4 ranked teams in conference, 1 ranked team in the conference championship, and 3-4 ranked teams in a full playoff run. That’s up to 9 ranked teams, don’t make OOC harder than it needs to be.

To me, making the playoff is what is most interesting. IMO interesting OOC only becomes interesting if you’re expecting to go 6-6. When OBD will ideally be playing 16-17 games in a great year, and at least 13 games in a good year, I personally couldn’t care less who we play in the 3 OOC games. This is something OBD can control, so use these opportunities to gel wisely..bring on Tiddlywink U to Autzen.

If the river rats fall into that model, fine. If not, bubye.

I was in the camp of maintaining this game yearly as an OOC game. It felt like something important and worthwhile. But watching the game and in talking with some work colleagues who are Beaver fans and we have always had great respect for each other. Their reaction to the game was a "why bother playing this?" and it kinda hit me... at this point the game is really feeling something like Oregon playing LSU or Ohio State in the late 2000's and early 2010's. Those were games where we felt like we had a chance but once the game got underway it was clear we didn't have the players to keep up.

I know I've said repeatedly that this game should continue if the Beavers want it because it will become an eternal L on their season's record. And that is exactly what this game will do for them.

A large portion of the Beaver fan base will forever hate the Ducks with a fiery passion but how many of us hate the Beavers will the same passion? As Charles posted above us a picture of a Beaver fan with a sign saying "Die Ducks Die" ... I can't remember seeing Duck fans holding a sign with that much hate towards the Beavers. Instead we tend to have signs that belittle them and poke fun at them.

We don't see them as our rivals anymore and rivalries need to go both ways.

The Civil War is dead. The good guys won.

No need to remind them of this every year.

No question the Civil War means a lot less at this juncture, but giving Beavis a good butt-whupping never gets old in my book.

College football is a completely different sport than it was just 5 years ago and traditional rivalries are being replaced by new ones, all part of the New World Order.

That said, the Civil War (or whatever it's called) will always matter to me and a lot of other Oregonians and I hope it continues.

If somehow Oregon's schedule has an opening in the first three games, then yeah, play Oregon State at home, Oregon should never play a game IN Corvallis again. Oregon doesn't owe Oregon State anything. Oregon State fans do hate Oregon. The hate consumes them.

Washington is consumed by hatred for the Ducks too. Can't go to any Husky site and not see, "It's all Phil Knight", the Uniforms, anything else to cloud over that Oregon leads the series since the mid 80's. An Oregon loss brings a bigger grin to Washington and Oregon State fan than a win by their team.

I'm completely indifferent to Oregon State, couldn't care less what they do. Washington is in the BIG, so some relevancy there. USC, that's a rivalry.

But we all hate Washington. That Rivarly went a bit dormant with the 12 years of Duck domination but has been given some new life with the Petersen era and the DeBoer eras causing us some pains.

That's a rivalry that still has some teeth to it. I think we're all looking forward to seeing Lanning and the Ducks demolish Washington at the end of this season.

Our lack of feelings for Oregon State are telling that this rivalry is dying.

Missouri vs Kansas is 57-54-9.   That Border War statistic has to fit the definition of rivalry.

But, in 2011 when Missouri left the Big12 and went to the SEC the game was discontinued.    That's 13 years without it.   The two programs have now scheduled each other 2025-26 and 2031-32.  Two on, four off.

Oklahoma left for the SEC this season.  The game with Oklahoma St was dropped.  Instead of OU non-conference, the OSu Cowboys will play Oregon, Arkansas, Alabama, Nebraska in the next few years.  There are no current plans for OU and Okie State to rekindle the Bedlam Series.

Obviously those examples involved conference teams which are now non-conference.  Appears one series will be periodic, the other is off the books for several years.  In both cases, participants will be able to schedule other Power 4 opponents.

I could get on board with either approach.  Especially since other sports such as basketball and baseball could still create matchups.

I want to end the series.. their fans are a nuisance and disrespectful.  We gain nothing playing them.

let them waddle in the new Parody Pac

I say let the rodents beg for mercy to end the series.   I don't mind enjoying more OBD lopsided victories.  What's wrong with scheduling them every (other) year, like we do against Portland State some years?   It will be a nice tune-up game and morale booster.  Only strike is playing in their tiny 30K+ stadium, but maybe $$$ will persuade them to come play at our big house instead.   😅

I tend to take the long view when it comes to in-state ‘anything’, because you can never really make those things go away; if ignored, they just tend to go dormant until the time is right to reappear. It really doesn’t matter whether you want in-state things to go away. They can’t.

Since the 2000 season, the Beavers have been involved in 17 losses by 35 points or more, including last Saturday.

Four of those 17 were to Oregon.  Though only the 7th worst defeat in Corvallis was to Oregon.  They lost 6 other home games to Pac programs by more.

14 of the 17 (9 home, 8 away) were to Pac opponents.

In that period the worst home loss was to Utah, the worst road loss to Oregon.

None of the 17 involved WSU or the Mt. West Four.

Not really a viable rivalry when the game means nothing.

In conference it was meaningful because of standings, or bowl implications. For the most part, their season was a success if they beat the Ducks.

Now, they are just that annoying pothole on the drive home…I will hit it only if there is no other alternative.

Petersen & DeBoer and DeBoer did cause some pain. But the Petersen team was so consumed by their hate towards the Ducks that they piled on 70 points, complete with Browning showing Husky class by wagging his finger at the Oregon player.  You wrote in your article that it's a rivalry when the W's are pretty even, Oregon is currently ahead about 20-6.

In a while, with the Huskies on their third or fourth coach, they might win a game or two.

I said in my article that I think Bray did his players a disservice with that line.

They played well and executed well. They just were outclassed physically.

We're still behind against the Huskies in the overall record last I checked. But that can change if Oregon can begin another decade of dominance.

Thanks for the article, David.

It got me to thinking that it probably isn't a rivalry game anymore since it is essentially a P4 vs a group of 5, soon to be six when the Pac whatever gets up to 8 teams.

Somewhat like Cal playing UC Davis.  Same school system, just in different divisions.

The Civil War rivalry will never totally die. It may lay dormant for awhile, but as soon as it's scheduled, we will look forward to it. At least those of us who live in state.

Beating the river rats is just too much joy to ever give up. And we all have friends, family, co-workers, etc who are die hard Beaver believers.

We want those bragging rights for the year!

This game went as I expected it would. I also anticipated osu fans to want the game to go away. The only thing worse then losing to your hated rival, is losing B1G!

How about every 3 years or so.

I expect we will have to continue to play home and away though. There is still the need to be politically correct in a small liberal state. We don't need Salem to get involved.

As far as being a rivalry, you never want to lose to your little brother. And your little brother will always hate you more cuz you "own" him.

But it's still a very important rivalry.

You're probably right, avoiding legal squabbles is enough to play the game every once in a while. But for the foreseeable future, big brother, Duck is about 20 years old and little bro, Beav is 6 years old.

Watching "Talkin' Beavers" they're going over the positives. One of the talkers mentioned that OSU won Time of Possession. Mike Parker said, "I probably should not have brought up, as I did late in the radio broadcast the suffering of Job, because these were not nearly as tormenting as those sufferings...however the thing I greatly feared has come upon me." The other Talker said his positive was that the game, "was over."

I mean they basically had the ball for the entirety of the first quarter it felt like.

Time of possession works great if you score on those drives and have a lockdown defense to stop opposing offenses.

I mean that's how Stanford won so many games and caused Oregon so many problems in the last decade.

This start doesn't work if you are out matched physically... As we all saw. They helped to burn their own clock to end the game for us.

As the Chipper oft said, TOP in today's game is meaningless. And after whining about it, Saint Nick followed suit,

OBD dominated TOP against Idaho, left the field with a 34-point undercover, and dropped in the polls.
