The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 2 Share Posted Wednesday at 11:59 PM What makes Lanning great are four main things. One: Football IQ Two: Tenacious Recruiting Three: Amazing motivator Four: Superior resources With OBD he will always have all four and will be able to compete at the highest levels into infinity. In the NFL, he can only bring Number one with him and everyone in the NFL has that all ready. Since it's clear he won't be making a lateral move in college, the powers that be can only hope he jumps to the NFL. In less than three years Lanning has taken his first team all the way to No. 1 and is now the favorite to win the Natty. I'm sure there are many out there that are upset by that and can only hope something happens to change this trajectory because it is looking like it won't be changed on the field any time soon. 2
Ktmguy2018 No. 3 Share Posted Thursday at 12:00 AM (edited) Really? That speculation is starting already? I think Oregon is actually a better job than any current bottom-dweller NFL openings and Oregon may pay better!! Couldn't agree more. "The grass isn't greener" in the NFL. Lanning sure looks like he's loving it here every day, the NFL is a business. Nothing about coaching an NFL team is like it is coaching a college team, and he has Oregon right where he wants it, and he wants to keep it there for a long time. The last thing he would do if the Ducks won the Natty this season is say, "Okay, I'm outta here!"

OregonDucks No. 6 Share Posted Thursday at 12:41 AM I think that Coach Lanning would be successful no matter where he is. That said, there have been some great college football coaches that have failed in the NFL. It’s a different game. Coach Lanning would likely have to adjust his motivational style. Hopefully he finishes the job and bring Oregon its first football national championship.
DrJacksPlaidPants Moderator No. 7 Share Posted Thursday at 12:41 AM These days, I think that to be a really good NFL head coach you have to cut your teeth in the NFL. Jimmy Johnson was an anomaly. He also had the benefit of no salary cap. Pete Carroll coached New England before USC and Barry Switzer should give his Super Bowl ring to Jimmy Johnson. Those three are the only college coaches to win the Super Bowl and a college championship.
HDuck No. 8 Share Posted Thursday at 12:58 AM Andy Reid is 66. Have no idea what his plans are for retirement from the Chiefs. Nor whether the Chiefs would hire a guy without NFL experience. But, the geographic location would likely get Lanning's attention.

I think Reid will stick around as long as he and Mahomes can maintain their success. He doesn’t have Belichik’s ego, so I don’t see him hanging around if Mahomes leaves or retires. Jon Joseph Moderator No. 10 Share Posted Thursday at 02:03 AM Danno has repeatedly said that he wants his boys to graduate from the same high school and that his cancer-survivor spouse has been moved enough. He just earned a $9M+ bonus. How much more money will he earn trying to motivate seasoned professionals? He's not Chipper. He does not hate to recruit, he relishes the game and has terrific support from Division Street. Not dumping on the post but on the author. Can't we escape idle speculation during the season? We have more than enough of this clickbait stuff in the too-long off-season. How about letting the guy win a Natty before speculating on his leaving Eugene? HappyToBeADuck No. 15 Share Posted Thursday at 03:51 AM DL's strengths can dominate in college football, especially in recruiting. Coach can't recruit in the NFL. He can't recruit 7 transfer players to immediately fill and fix needs, in one srason. DL has a long, long leash at Oregon to get that first Natty. He has no legend to follow. In the nfl he must win now and win big. The window is narrow, produce or you are looking for a job. The grass is never greener somewhere else, except at Oregon. Where annual 9.5 million dollar extensions exist. Thats some real green. Personally i consider Bama and Georgia HC position better than an NFL bottom feeder job. David Marsh No. 16 Share Posted Thursday at 05:45 AM The NFL is a different game... Well ok it's still football. But roster management, player management, "recruitment" is all different. Then the meta game is very different too. It's not called "pro-style" for nothing. Would Lanning be a good NFL coach. Probably... But he has it in him to be a great college coach. The reality is that NFL coaches exist in their own bubble and college coaches in theirs. Sure there is some cross over these days but the two games are so different that you don't see much cross over anymore. Tosh Lupoi did a stint in the NFL as a position coach and then came back to college. I remember a few years ago during the Jimmy Lake era at Washington they were raving about how many NFL coaches they had... And that didn't seem to do them any good.
Grandpa Duck No. 17 Share Posted Thursday at 07:54 AM Lanning grew up in a small town. The part of Eugene where he works, the northeast, in many ways, is like a small town. Everything his family needs is close by. Sheldon high school has great academics and the best athletics in this part of Oregon. It has a large indoor swim facility. He golfs and Eugene Country Club, nationally renown, is just down the street from Autzen. The newest hospital and all the best physicians are right here. Shopping centers and wonderful residential areas are blended in. I know this well because I live here. My grandchildren went to Sheldon, one playing center and tackle in football, plus lacrosse. Snow mountains and winter sports are less than two hours east, and the Pacific Ocean is less than two hours west. i cannot imagine him trading the life he and his family have here for living in a huge metropolitan city. 2 2
EastBayDuckDad Moderator No. 18 Share Posted Thursday at 11:02 AM Many of the media sites are aping the cited article about DL being looked at by NFL teams. The old adage that where there's smoke there's fire simply doesn't apply when every blogger and media outlet is scrabbling for content and easy copy. The Harbaugh reference is almost laughable as there are few if any parallels. Harbaugh played QB in the NFL and nearly took the 49ers to a championship in his first league coaching gig. He returned when the time was right with a team he wanted and an all-pro QB (Oregon's very own JH) to coach. As has been mentioned on this thread, the track record for successful college coaches with no NFL experience to succeed at the next level is dismal. The money is no better and there is always a GM looming overhead making personnel decisions, looking out for themselves and brown-nosing the owners. Vacancies are nearly always dumpster fire teams that require a major rebuild, and the HC is the first one to take the blame and get shown the door when things go pear-shaped. The Andy Reids, John Harbaughs and Mike Tomlins are rare in the modern NFL. Maybe after several years of high level success with a NC or two and an open gig with KC (when Reid retires) dangling, things might look different. Keeping his family in one place has been a believable priority for DL. If he could turn down Bama to stay where the grass is 'damn green', it seems pretty unlikely that he would trade Eugene, Oregon for Chicago and Caleb Williams. 1
NJDuck Moderator No. 19 Share Posted Thursday at 02:46 PM Agree, Dan Lanningi is staying in EUGENE OREGON! Dan and family are content and happy where they are. NFL fans are going to look very silly when Dan Lanning stays in Eugene with the Ducks Once again, the rumor is churning out ideas that Dan Lanning is set to leave Oregon as jobs become available in the NFL. Too bad the grass is so green in Eugene. NFL organizations and elite college programs are always going to want to have people like Lanning at the helm of their programs. However, hasn't he done enough to squash the idea that he (and his family) are willing to leave Eugene? His sons love Oregon's culture, his wife is referred to as the 'First Lady' of the Ducks, and heck, people call Lanning 'Daddy Dan'. Isn't it obvious that the Lannings may want to stick around? As more vacancies continue to pop up in the ever-rotating coaching carousel, Oregon fans may need just to trust the fact that their head coach is here to stay. Haywarduck Moderator No. 20 Share Posted Thursday at 03:01 PM Dan has integrity, and a clear vision. I enjoy following Lanning and what he does. I think Lanning is having a blast learning and trying out his ideas at Oregon. When he stops learning and can't make his ideas work, then he may look elsewhere. For now that just isn't happening. There is also the fact he wants to have a stable family situation. I doubt there is any NFL job which would enhance his current situation. I don't find these articles even slightly interesting.

JabbaNoBargain No. 24 Share Posted Thursday at 09:06 PM Silly season. DL may or may not be good at the NFL, but if he continues doing what he's doing, the NFL opportunity will always be an option. He likes where he's at and flat out doesn't seem like an NFL guy. In the "olden days", him leaving to get a once in a life-time payday may have been more of a concern, but that's pretty irrelevant now.
30Duck Author No. 25 Share Posted Thursday at 09:14 PM Of course it's Cowherd. Geetz Romo No. 28 Share Posted yesterday at 01:21 AM My sense of Dan Lanning is that he either tells the truth or says nothing. I can't find the link, but earlier this season when asked about his goals, he said, " I want to win a national championship," ( here comes the significant part), "and I want to beat Mike Bellotti's career wins as Oregon coach." I think that second goal, pronounced out loud, tells us everything we need to know on this subject. Note: Mike Bellotti was Oregon's head coach for 14 years (1995-2008) and won 116 games. So I figure that will take Lanning at least nine years. 1 1
