Notalot No. 1 Share Posted December 10 One of the requisites to compete for the CFB Football title next year is a top-5 quarterback. I don’t know how Dante has developed, and if he is “one of those guys”. The same goes for Novosad. What do OBD readers think? What makes you think we already have or don’t have the one we need in the locker room?
David Marsh No. 2 Share Posted December 10 We haven't seen much of either of them this year. But against Washington Moore took the field and seemed comfortable and had some nice zip on the couple balls he threw. Besides that... I've got nothing. This like in all things right now, in Dan we trust. 1
1Funduck No. 3 Share Posted December 10 Next year sets up as an absolute gift for a QB to get his web feet wet. We play @PS and home with Indiana. Thats the toughest regular season games. No Ohio and no Michigan. Whoever is QB will be given a gift for development and plenty of room for mulligans next year. We could very well go undefeated in the regular season again. 1 1 3
The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 4 Share Posted December 10 The two and three deep is littered with four and five star dudes at most positions. We're going to have to trust them to be able to step up into starting spots sometime. Hopefully the coaches got a good feel for who's ready and who's not. 1 1
mikethehiker No. 5 Share Posted December 10 Next year is going to be as good of a year as any to develop your next signal caller. The outgoing crop of top tier QBs with talent and big game experience leaving after 2023 and 2024 are going to leave a significant vacuum in that Top 5-10 quarterback list. The most proven big-game experience potentially returning will be Drew Allar, Jalen Milroe, and Quinn Ewers. I'm fine putting our next highly talented and developing QB in the box with those guys with Will Stein running the show. If we have the right pieces around Dante Moore and Novosad, they still have the opportunity to have OBD competing at the highest level. 1
mikethehiker No. 6 Share Posted December 10 Wait, does DJ Uiagalelei have any more years of eligibility left? Just kidding. The only transfer I'd be interested in is a healthy Cam Rising if he's able to swing another year. That guy is a freaking baller. 2
QuackyQuack No. 7 Share Posted December 10 Dante has impressed me this season. Not what he has done on the field, but what he has shown on the sideline. As fans, I think we're all a bit cautious about the 5-star hype, especially after the disappointment of Ty Thompson. While Moore clearly has the talent to be a great quarterback (he’s a 5-star with a massive arm), next season will reveal whether he's taken this year seriously and has truly absorbed the lessons from sitting behind DG. Here’s why I’m confident he will succeed: 1. He learned from the best - Whenever you see him on the sideline or in any of Oregon's marketing videos, Dante is always closely observing DG. He’s had a front-row seat to learn from one of the best in college football, from film study to leadership. Few quarterbacks have had a better mentor at the college level. 2. He has Will Stein coaching him up and developing him. WS has shown the last 2 seasons he sets his quarterbacks up for success with play calls. Hopefully Stein is still the OC next year. 3. As someone mentioned above the schedule looks favorable next year. He isn't going to be thrown into the fire (like he was at UCLA) 4. Supporting cast - this is what the Oregon offense is built on. A QB does not need to come in and light it up and make magic happen. This offense is setup to dink and dunk all the way down the field and get the ball in your playmakers hands. He doesn't need to be a hero to be successful. Just a really good game manager. 1 2 1
Jon Sousa No. 8 Share Posted December 10 I trust them both. No matter who wins the QB battle, I hope the other stays. I think that Moore is more likely to leave. I also really like Moga, though he is probably another year away. I trust Dan and Will to have everybody ready to go. It's about time that we trusted in a home grown rather than a portal guy. 1

That sounds like a tough game to me. 1
Jon Joseph Moderator No. 10 Share Posted December 10 Thanks, Not. Great topic. Does anyone remember the 2024 opener against "FCS Cupcake Idaho" with Oregon having a Heisman finalist playing QB? And all the preseason love for OBD? 2024 FCS Playoff No. 8 seed Idaho plays 13-0 No. 1 seed Montana State in Bozeman on Saturday. Tommy Mellott nearly flawless as top-seeded Montana State dominates UT Martin 49-17 WWW.MONTANASPORTS.COM Tommy Mellott passed for 300 yards for the first time in his Montana State career and helping the top-seeded Bobcats to a 49-17 win over Tennessee Martin in the second round of the FCS... Mellott has one year of eligibility remaining. He is surrounded by terrific Big Sky FCS players. Montana State gets 17 All-Big Sky selections, 13 for Montana I'm not certain how many return but 17 players earned Big Sky honors in 2024. Do Not Schedule FCS Opponents from the Dakotas! Jon Joseph Moderator No. 11 Share Posted December 10 Fun Discussion - After what Dilly's done, offers for Will Stein's services will come. If you see a team that could be attractive to Will still open through the course of OBD's PO run, Will could be headed there. I trust Danno to replace him with a person of equal or superior talent. Any program on a trajectory like OBD's will produce suitors for the assistant coaches. 1 1
EastBayDuckDad Moderator No. 12 Share Posted December 10 My money is that Moore will be ready by next spring. Of course, the addition of a QB in the portal would change that bet but I don't see that happening. Moore was the #2 QB recruit and #3 overall in 2022 (after Manning, who I'd argue was no better). His HS film was self explanatory. The disappointment was real when he decommitted from Oregon. His freshman season at UCLA was grim given the awful O-line he was behind and Chip's less than stellar developmen, but he still logged some highlight moments. The problem at UCLA was coaching, the speed of the P5 college game, issues with rapid processing and reading defenses and coverages. He has now spent a year developing under WS and DG. He has incredible arm strength and touch on his throws. If you want to be reminded of his raw talent and grit, watch the highlights from the 2022 All-American HS game. Novosad played in the same game on the opposing team and the contrast was stark. Novosad has the advantage of an additional year in the program but i believe Moore has caught up and has superior skills. 1 1 1
HappyToBeADuck No. 13 Share Posted December 10 Its hard to tell what level the QB's are at in the current room and about incoming stars. Are they talented? Of course... They simply lack real game time experience. And that matters... Bo had 34 starts under his belt when he took the field as a Duck. Dillion had 49 starts. That experience helped win ballgames. And under their leadership the Ducks are 35-5, with some unfinished business with The Real Dawgs..... Unless a high quality QB transfers via the portal, well there may be a big learning curve ahead at the QB position. I trust DL and the staff to be on top of this, as usual... GO DUCKS...... 1
Haywarduck No. 14 Share Posted December 10 I imagine Lanning will want someone who can get drafted at the end of the season at QB next year. Nix was that guy a few seasons ago, Gabriel is that guy this season. Next season if Stein and Lanning think Moore is that guy then we may not go after a portal guy. If there is any question about Moore's capability I can see bringing in somebody to compete against him. In the end guys are coming to Oregon to see if they have what it takes to win and be ready for the NFL. We don't owe anyone who doesn't measure up the opportunity to break that streak. My feeling is Moore is that guy, and Novosad is a very good back-up, which we need. A Smith jr., Moga and others will have to try and prove they deserve to earn that spot. Many will probably transfer out like Ty did last year. From here on out, under Lanning, the Qb position will be a much sought after position by transfers and those sitting on the bench. The guy who wins the position won't do it by default. The problem is we just don't see that evaluation, or any visible progress. I trust Lanning has that all figured out, and think my take isn't too far off, but I am wrong all the time, just ask my wife! 1 1

DanLduck No. 16 Share Posted December 11 I hope Dante's future is with Oregon. I want to see Dan & Will develop in-house talent. We will have 2-5☆ and 3-4☆ and a talented 3☆ on scholarship next year if no one transfers. That's a loaded QB room. I think both Dante and Austin* are ready and competent to play. Both need in-game experience to develop. Akili Jr and the Hawaii kid are both studs also. *Austin looked really good in Spring game. The Best qb in my opinion. It's time we develop our own recruits or lose interest from potential recruits. Dante came here with the promise of development. Dan is a man of his word. This year we had talented seniors and needed an experienced qb to help a Natty run. DG was a good fit. I don't see next year having the same urgency. Besides, with limited schollies available, we have greater needs for portal players. TE, D-line and a #1 WR for starters.
criticalduck No. 17 Share Posted December 12 (edited) They all transfer out if Jaren-Keawe Sagapotele lights it up next fall but I think Dante will win the job. Hopefully Jaren will be ok with redshirting a year. I see several years, in a row, of Heisman finalists in OBD future. PLAY PORTLAND STATE! I have a very rare and amazing circumstance this year both my teams are 13-0 and are favored to win their prospective championships. I was excepted to UO but attended Montana State because in state tuition was 1/24 of the cost. Long story short I have a FCS team and a FBS team. First off Montana has nothing to do with the Dakotas "them fight works where I come from". Second this is the last team in FCS you want to play early in the season, they eviscerated Idaho 38-7 and looked much better doing it than OBD did. New QB next year against a solid Bobcat D could get interesting. The Cats can put up the TDs on O and could be a lot to handle for a brand new Ducks D. The Ducks should over power them with talent but why take the risk. By the way MSU has been good for awhile and they scheduled this game with them anyway. I'm more than a little conflicted and if it's close I will probably have a heart attack one way or another. 1 1 1
