I know I suffer from PTDS, Post-Traumatic Ducks Syndrome. The close-but seasons took a toll on me and have left me always a bit skeptical of climbing all the way to the top, this season included. It's gonna be tough.

I think you have it exactly right; college football coaching is getting to be a young man's game. The amount of energy it takes, the need to relate to 17-year-olds, all the other business with staff, boosters...it doesn't seem a good fit for what is objectively a grumpy old man. Plus, the game on the field itself has changed in the past decades. Even his son looks old and grumpy, to boot.

Whether he believes it nor not, it's a great thing to say when you're leading a team. It means there's no opening for anyone in the program to feel sorry for themselves, or think about "what-ifs", or be apprehensive. When the boss says this, you gotta believe it.
