How Loyal Will Dan Lanning Be to Oregon? (Here is the Answer)
Notalot replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I hope that this quote from Don Lanning (Dan's dad) is indicative of the family values that guide our coach. 20 years, outpacing Casanova, would be great. “We made a promise to the Lord and to ourselves and to our children,” Don explained. “We would not move them around once they started school. Wherever they started kindergarten, we would make sure they stayed and graduated high school.” - Canzano from the Bald Faced Truth -
If only we could face those Bulldogs in the Horseshoe!

No one knows what Lanning will do, and when and if he moves elsewhere. It's a personal decision based on his personal situations and goals, aspirations, opportunities, and career planning (rhymes with Lanning). Coach Lanning's spouse and family play into such decisions big time. Personal and family health are influencing factors. I have to imagine that job satisfaction, success, tools of the trade support, and relations with the university, community, donors, AD, and the President of Oregon are influences that will weigh heavily into the stay or move-on issue. The rabbit-in-a-hat mystery of conference alignments will surely play a big part in Coach Lanning's future. Assuming that Oregon Football stays in the elite top tier of college football, then it will come down to a benefit analysis as fork-in-the road opportunities come up in the future when he will decide if Oregon or the new opportunity are best for him and his family. Will Lanning have an urge or a pull to return to the Southeast? What if he builds the brand and competes for or wins that national championship? Will that be enough to settle long term in here at Oregon, or with the offers and acclaim will there be the irresistible pull (with more compensation) to go elsewhere to build a program? I worked on and led some major global start up and reorganization projects in my career. I was pulled to the biggest and most difficult ones by the challenge. My family, making many sacrifices, came along with me . Might Dan Lanning feel that pull after success at Oregon? We hope and cheer for Coach Lanning's success here at Oregon, but what if his record is mediocre during the term of his contract? It doesn't seem that the AD, donors, and fans at Oregon want to return to 7-6 or 8-5 seasons again.

Nasty Truth: Oregon No Longer Quarterback U, But Needs To Be
Notalot replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
OUCH! That was nasty. Going farther back into the history of Ducks football there were other great QB's; Norm Van Brocklin, Bob Berry, Dan Fouts were some of them. At least some of the situation the writer describes is related to coaching turnover and the brief tenure of head coaches and offensive coordinators. The quarterbacks on Oregon's roster either did not develop each year, transferred out, or the Ducks brought in a graduate transfer interrupting transition. One can now only speculate on the future without game history with the new coaches. I'm pretty sure that Coach Lanning will expect excellence from QB's, and oversee their development, knowing that excellence from the QB's is requisite to winning football. Coach Dillingham's track record includes high powered offenses triggered with outstanding QB play. I believe in our coache's abilities to develop quarterbacks. Yes, the Ducks have been through a rough patch, but it should soon be in the rearview mirror. -

The Eventual College Football Renaissance
Notalot replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Renaissance or shambles? I'm not sure. There has been D1, D2, DIII, NAIA, JUCO, and other Divisions of college football. The new model will separate D1 further with an elite super division with 40-50 teams. A new semi-pro league may not be as revolutionary as it first seens or feels. Pay for play changes everything. The Supreme Court righted a wrong for players, but changed the playing field of college footbball in doing so. The next decade of college football may be more interesting off the field than on. Thank you David for the article.
