  1. The LA schools to the B1G caught everybody by surprise yet when the Arizona president first learned of the move it was Oregon and USC????? Once again Dennis Dodd puts his intellectual and journalistic talents on display.
  2. Good catch, but Michael Bodkin, one of the authors linked above also referenced his opinion piece on media rights. I get the impression Bodkin is in the Canzano/Wilner level of journalism, one that actually talks to legit sources and then thinks about what they say, producing content actually worthwhile. In fact, it’s sounding like the Pac-12 has found some mixture between ESPN, Amazon, and Apple that they like and are just busy hammering out the details. Opinion: Making Sense Of The Latest Pac-12 Negotiation Rumors KSLSPORTS.COM It's been a busy few weeks regarding the Pac-12 negotiation rumors. Let's try to make some sense of it together.
  3. Reinvented the high jump, probably the best know track and field athlete from Oregon State. The Oregon/Oregon State dual meets used to be legendary. Apparently the autocorrect on this site doesn't allow the common usage of the name Richard so we have jerk Fosberry. 'Fosbury Flop' high jumper jerk Fosbury dies at age 76 WWW.ESPN.COM jerk Fosbury, the lanky leaper who completely revamped the technical discipline of high jump and won an Olympic gold medal with his "Fosbury Flop," has died, according to his publicist...
  4. Prior to adding Colorado and Utah in 2010 the Pac-10 distributed media revenue 55% to the participants, 45% split 10 ways among conference members. It isn't unreasonable a similar arrangement would be arranged for post season appearances in the new Pac-?. This years playoff netted $6 million for the conference of each participant. Revenue projections for the expanded playoff format reach as high as $1.6 billion. Distribution hasn't yet been determined but rest assured it will be many multiples of the $6 million payout this year. Hypothetical: The playoff distribution rises to $20 million per participant for the first round. ($250 million total). A 55% share is a tidy $11 million to Oregon should they qualify with more available if they advance. Staying in the Pac with that potential payout combined with avoiding the projected additional $10 million in travel costs the LA traitors may incur goes a very long way to offsetting any additional revenue from joining the B1G.
  5. Fascinating, I want you on my trivia team. Just glancing at the date I'm shocked at the 2019 defensive numbers. Decent but not great number of takeaways but they only surrendered 231 points over 14 games! They held six teams to single digits, five in a row. I guess Andy Avalos was better than I remember.
  6. Interesting data, thanks. Wish there was an easy way to determine how many possessions an opposing offense had. More possessions, and the need to put up at least 40 points, undoubtedly led to our opponent taking greater risks on offense when Chip Kelly walked the sidelines.
  7. Just checked the historical record for ND/U$C through 2021. 92 games, two at neutral site. Notre Dame has won 2/3rds of the games played in South Bend (28-14) but has a losing record (20-23) when they visit LA. Five ties over the years, four of them in LA.
  8. I hope not, I don't think I could stand to wait all day for an exciting Rutgers/U$C contest at the Mausoleum. Indiana vs the Bruins, another day of eager anticipation.
  9. Rich Brooks certainly doesn't show his 80+ years, many of them high stress.
  10. I stopped at based on sources close to Dennis Dodd. I generally don't subscribe to the 'media bias' horse pucky but I'm starting to make an exception for CBS, Mr. Dodd and the Big 10. They have beaten the Pac-12 is doomed drum relentlessly. Remember CBS will profit handsomely from their B1G contract but they would do even better without the Pac. Guessing the sports arm has more editorial discretion than the actual news division.
  11. SOON TO BE EVEN: In Oregon, Cliff Kirkpatrick reports revenue sharing "will be equal for the first time starting in the 2012-13 academic calendar year, after the conference renegotiates its television contract." Pac-10 Unveils Division, Title Game, Equal Revenue Sharing Plans WWW.SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL.COM
  12. Remember, the source of revenue in revenue sharing has changed over the years. For much of the Pac's history revenue was the proceeds from the gate. WSU got half the net when they played in the Coliseum, U$C got half when they visited Martin Stadium. Obviously WSU got the best of that deal. I think that changed about the time Arizona/ASU joined. At one point revenue from the rare TV appearance was split 55% to the televised team, 45% split among the conference members. League media rights prior to Colorado and Utah joining were about $6 million per school. With expansion and a new media deal the league total jumped to the $170 million range so even with equal shares schools doubled their media income.
  13. The NY Times just had a good article on hoops phenom Emoni Bates and his fall from "the next LaBron" to "maybe he will be drafted". Echo's much of what was said above. They allow a certain number of free articles each month so it might not be behind a paywall. He Was Billed as the Next LeBron. But Will Emoni Bates Make It at All? - The New York Times WWW.NYTIMES.COM Bates was on a magazine cover at 15. He was playing Division I college basketball at 17. Now he’s 19, his college career may be over, and N.B.A. success is anything but guaranteed.
  14. Sabrina leaving created a gigantic leadership void. Add in all the covid restrictions on team functions and bonding and you see the results. Team culture is hard to build, easy to lose. Men's hoops is in sort of the same mess the past couple years and I don't think Altman has forgotten how to coach.
  15. Always tempered with which team member do you run off to make room.
  16. The same time the OL coach, an integral member of his staff, was entering just his second year as a GA That is a lot of youth. Every rock star coach started somewhere. Let's hope this year it is at Oregon.
  17. John Ruiz strikes again. I had to laugh the NCAA site article didn't mention his name. https://www.si.com/college/2023/02/24/miami-booster-john-ruiz-cavinder-twins-ncaa-ruling-nil-business
  18. I think Lanning sent a strong message of "walk away, don't put yourself in a potentially risky situation". Not a bad lesson for a group of young men to learn, IMO.
  19. The unspoken part of the post above is the time zone change. Actual miles traveled or time in the air isn't the only factor. Jet lag disorder - Symptoms and causes WWW.MAYOCLINIC.ORG
  20. With the renewed flurry of "breaking news" rumors a conspiracy theorist might think there is a master plan to destroy the Pac. I wonder who might benefit the most (cough LA schools cough) if Oregon, UW, Cal and Stanford became annual opponents yet received tens of millions of dollars less in media rights. But we all know U$C is pure as the driven snow, right?
  21. I'm not sure Oregon needs to chase the short term dollars. It has long been rumored Uncle Phil intends to fund a substantial endowment. Using his estimated net worth suppose he gave a gift of 10 percent, all in Nike stock. That stock would yield annual dividends in the $45 million range and Nike has a 21 year record of increasing their payments. Any media contract adds to that. Is a ten percent gift realistic? Given the role his affiliation with Oregon athletics contributed to his wealth it probably is.
  22. Don't forget that Holden has been on campus for six weeks. We have absolutely no idea how his attitude and interactions with staff and teammates has been, Lanning does. Maybe this was a case of a young coach overreacting, maybe this was a case of the final straw in a series of inappropriate actions by a player. Maybe it is somewhere in between, we will never know. Lanning has shown good judgement in his short tenure and has more information on this incident than most. I'll trust him on this.
  23. In my opinion yes. Not being charged is not the same as innocent. I only read the original reports but getting in a fight which escalates to pepper spray and brandishing a gun with threats to shoot is a series of actions that merits repercussions. The young man escaped a criminal record but appropriately still suffered serious consequences. Hopefully he makes better choices going forward.
