Does Georgia Need Oregon?
In short, no. The defending national champs from the SEC will get a pass for pretty much any one loss with or without an SEC championship. Remember Alabama not even winning their division and still going to the CFP as a 1-loss team? For Georgia, undefeated they're in, one loss they're in, two losses they're out. Whatever Oregon does from here on out is irrelevant.

Canzano: Big 12 Beats Pac-12 to Finish Line -- but not Bottom Line
Looks to me like our best case is still less than half what the B1G is getting per team. If I'm Mullens I'm looking for a short-term contract with an escape clause. IMHO the B12 has set the bar pretty low, thanks for that. Still don't like it, but if the B1G calls we have to go. That kind of income disparity is not sustainable.

Joseph Goodman (Auburn): Watching Bo Nix With Bitterness in My Heart
Count me as one of the skeptics when Bo transferred, I just didn't see him as substantially better than AB (nothing against AB). As usual though I was cautiously optimistic and a maybe little caught up in the honeymoon period of a new coaching staff. One of the reasons we love college football is that it is so damn unpredictable and guess what coaches really do matter. The problem with Mario's status quo for me was that I just started to expect mediocre coaching, so when all of a sudden we get a coaching staff that really knows how to coach everything brightens up all of a sudden and Bo's emergence exemplifies that. Good for him.

Who Would YOU Allow as a Pac-12 Power?
LIttle brother--remember the Civil War (that's what is was then!) that was winner-take-all for the Rose Bowl? One of my best Autzen memories. WSU--I agree, keep it in the NW and we can root for them to trounce the Fuskies every year in the Apple Cup (well I guess we do that anyway). Furd--We've had some great games over the years, it's become one of our better rivalries.

Is 12-Team CFB Playoff Format Too Much or Just Right?
Agree, that's why I think AQs are so important. At-large teams are selected using subjective criteria and it's just about impossible to eliminate bias.

Is 12-Team CFB Playoff Format Too Much or Just Right?
Well I certainly hope you're right and this year's CFP selection committee looks reasonably balanced and diverse: 2022-23 Selection Committee Roster COLLEGEFOOTBALLPLAYOFF.COM The official 2022-23 Selection Committee Roster for the College Football Playoff That said, historically the makeup of the CFP hasn't been much different and they still have been biased towards the SEC, Clemson and the B!G.

Is 12-Team CFB Playoff Format Too Much or Just Right?
Agree, no matter what scenario the SEC/B1G get over half the slots. Throw in ND any time they have a decent season, Clemson as a perennial contender and the Big-12 Champ going forward and that doesn't leave much left. We need AQ status to have consistent access and that only happens with 12 (or more) teams.

Amazon Exec Very Interested in College Football
Clearly streaming is the lynchpin of the pending TV deal, if for no other reason that it means bringing in a second bidder. Without Amazon (or Apple) ESPN lowballs us and we really don't have much recourse. That said Amazon execs are no dummies, so they're unlikely to throw out a ridiculous amount just get some college football content, especially with a depleted Pac-12. We're not the NFL. Will they overpay some as an investment in the future? I sure hope so, but we've certainly got to temper our expectations, we're going to get nowhere near what the B1G just got.

Is 12-Team CFB Playoff Format Too Much or Just Right?
Personally I think 8 would be about right except for one thing--the SEC will never allow automatic qualifiers with an 8-team playoff. An 8-team playoff of "the best teams" just turns into more of a ridiculous beauty contest than the CFP is now. The SEC goal is continued domination of the CFP, so they're willing to allow AQs as long as there are enough slots left for them to pad with more SEC teams. The B1G has newfound wealth and consequent power so this benefits them too. The proposed 12-team structure is about as good as we're going to get IMHO, but I don't see how we don't get to 16 not too far down the road. That's a lot of games, so there's still plenty of logistical hurdles and if they can't figure out a way to give draftable players enough financial incentive to stick around for another month it just turns into a series of exhibition games. My cynicism aside, the current CFP is merely BCS.2 so any expansion would be at least some improvement, and anything that gives us more access is certainly a step in the right direction.

LA Times Columnist: Pac-12, Big 12 Punishing USC, Texas?
Agree, we disrespect them all the time (and deservedly so) but this was one of their better officiated games this year.
-
LA Times Columnist: Pac-12, Big 12 Punishing USC, Texas?
Yeah that. Let's just dispense with the nonsense that the Pac-12 needs to have USC on top to be relevant, especially now that they are lame duck (sorry) members. If USC winds up winning the conference this year (or next) all we'll hear is how the Pac-12 collapses without them. We'll do just fine, thank you.
-
LA Times Columnist: Pac-12, Big 12 Punishing USC, Texas?
Sorry Spoiled Children, I just don't see what happens in a Big 12 game as being relevant to your loss at Utah. I didn't hear you complaining about the P12 refs resetting the game clock in the fourth quarter from 8 to 13 seconds with no real explanation.

Dan Lanning is All Class
Probably could have, but it's safer just to launch the ball out of bounds to burn the last few seconds. I was a little suprised though, that he didn't scramble a little on each kneel-down to burn off a few more seconds.

Quack! Iapani Laloulu Commits to Oregon
Now we're talking. Glaring weakness in this 2023 class is O-line, this really helps.
-
Dan Lanning is All Class
Precision clock management. I didn't think they would be able to burn that last 13 seconds in one play, but by launching that last moon-ball Bo milked every last second. Since the clock doesn't stop until the ball actually touches something out of bounds, it was clear that DL had no intention of scoring.

Bo Stays at Oregon for 2023 Season?
Great point, that would pretty well seal it in my book, but my gut tells me KD is going to be around for another year (not just wishful thinking I hope).

Bo Stays at Oregon for 2023 Season?
Boo, got me all excited should have been a question mark at the end of the headline? Anyhoo you got me so I might as well chime in ha ha. YES that would be great, don't see it happening though. He's previously stated he's only going to be here for one year and if he finishes the season strong, it would make sense for him to declare if he's projected to be a day one or two draft pick IMHO. That said, all indications are that he is loving playing football at Oregon right now, and Herbert came back for the same reason (and he was a sure top-ten pick) so you never know.

ESPN Midseason First Year College Coaches Grades
Mostly agree, but I would put Lannning at least on par with DeBoer (better record and has beaten a ranked team). Snickering at MC and Miami. Not saying he's not going to get it going there, but you really have to give the Oregon Athletic Department credit considering how our last two former coaches have performed in comparison to their tenure at Oregon.

Herbert/Chargers Win in Overtime...Whew!
A win is a win, but man that was an ugly game to watch.

Canzano: Utah Knocks Off USC -- and the Pac-12 Smiles
Boo hoo, could woulda shoulda. A loss is a loss, you got beat by a team who outplayed you with the game on the line. Did the officials prevent your defense from a fourth down stop on Utah's last TD, or a stop on the 2-point conversion? Didn't think so, ha ha. Cry my a river.

The Ducks and Duck Fans are Better Off in the Pac-12 Than the B1G
Kevin Warren would kill the Pac-12 off in heartbeat. He may have already. What the presidents don't have an appetite for is sharing any of their newfound wealth. Can't say I blame them there, if you were Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers or Maryland would you want Oregon and Washington to come in and bump you further down the ladder while giving up revenue in the process? Wilner is usually pretty insightful and well-connected, but all I read here is that there's no hurry. They could offer Oregon and Washington membership tomorrow or in five years and they almost certainly would be accept. Warren knows this, he's holding all the cards waiting for the best time to go all in.

The Ducks and Duck Fans are Better Off in the Pac-12 Than the B1G
Still not enough information in my book. We don't know what kind of TV/streaming deal we're getting. Indications are it'll be maybe half of what the B1G members are getting. That big of an income gap eventually becomes a talent gap, I just don't see any way around that. Can GK pull it off? I'm certainly rooting for him and I would like nothing more than for the Pac-? to remain viable, but realistically if the B1G comes calling we have to go. Don't like it, sad but true IMHO.

PAC-12: You Better Get Your Rear in Gear, or May You Rest in Peace
As much as I hate to admit it, the conference will never be the same without the LA schools, both economically (media market) and in terms of tradition. USC (football) and UCLA (basketball) are the only true conference bluebloods. While the collapse of the Pac-12 would sadden me, my loyalties are to Oregon first, so the question to me is what's best for the Ducks? There's no doubt in my mind that we can be nationally competitive in a newly restructured Pac-? within a newly expanded CFP. That said, how do we stay close enough in the massive money grab to avoid fading into obscurity? Let's face it, the Pac-12 is not in a postion of strength. Our expansion options are limited and ultimately controlled by the ivory tower academics. Are we destined to become a boutique academic and olympic sport conference? As for the B1G, I think eventually the invite comes. My heart says stay but me head says go.
-
Canzano: Big Ten Sounds Like it's Standing Down vs. Pac-12
Make no mistake, until a new TV deal is signed Oregon and Washington are still in play for the B1G. As we saw with the quickly expanded CFP the situation is extremely fluid.

Ducks Mid-Season: Tell Us What Surprises You So Far
1. Being 5-1 going into our bye week. Pre-season I was thinking 4-2, worst case 3-3 with losses to GA, BYU and WSU. 2. The efficiency of the offense. Long, grind it out drives mixed with explosion plays. Since Georgia opposing defenses haven't had any answers. 3. The play of the transfers. I thought Bo Nix was going to AB.2 (nothing against Anthony, he was solid but unspectacular). Bo is finally living up to his potential and has total command of the offense. I was pretty skeptical with the running back rotation, but Irving and Whittingham have proven to be a really good 1-2 punch. 4. Along with many others I thought our defense would be the strength of the team. This is clearly a work in progress, but I would have expected them to gel faster than the offense, especially with Lanning's background. 5. I can't necessarily say I'm surprised, but still disappointed with our kick return/coverage.
