Lanning's indicated he wants to try and get as many in-state (worthy) recruitsas possible and if USC & UCLA continue to see an upswing in their programs it might be necessary. Always like the in-state kids over others, for obvious reasons. But you gotta get the best you can get to stay competitive, wherever they are.

As far as recruiting top players out of California goes this is what I think Oregon's chances are going forward: 1) They depend greatly on how well USC & UCLA are ranked and playing. Those 2 schools up (like this year) Oregon's chances go down. 2) They depend somewhat on how well CAL and Stanford are ranked and playing. Those 2 schools up (unlike this year) and Oregon still has a decent chance. Oregon has been benefitting from USC, UCLA, CAL and Stanford schools struggling in the recent 2 decades, more-or-less. Once that changes (and it is already) then Oregon will be forced to find their 4 & 5 stars elsewhere. By and large, not entirely, of course. But the low hanging fruit is about gone for Oregon in that region of the west IF the two biggest schools continue to find success. How moving to the B1G effects that will have to be seen but it might also tend to make things tougher for Oregon.

Ducks vs Cal: Game-Prep Article Thread
Mic replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I wonder if there's anyone left at CAL who remembers Tosh Lupoi when he was on staff? His exit from the program was, how shall we say, checkered ? If you aren't familiar with that, you can google it up. I don't think it will make any difference in the game but he was CAL's D.C. too, once. -
A.J. Pugliano has the size at 6'4", 220 lbs for a collegiate TE and he's just a HS senior. Could reach 6'5" or more. Hope Oregon can land him - sounds like they may have already. As far as David Peevy goes, it sounds like UW or USC are on the inside track. Peevy was scheduled to visit Oregon last weekend (but didn't) and if College Game Day and the Game of the Week in the Pac wasn't enough to get him here, it sounds like O has already dropped off his list. Un-officially. But, who knows? What about more Linemen ?!

It think it highly unlikely that Bo Nix will play another year at Oregon. I wish he would, but I think it pretty wishful thinking. No, he's on to the NFL and with his skill set he should get a very good look-at by the scouts, the agents and more than a few teams. imo

Ducks vs UCLA: Post Game Recaps, Articles, Interviews
Mic replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
We all find ways to deal with the biggest disappointments in life. For DTR, who's performance was both good and bad yesterday, he deals with it this way. So be it. T'won't change the score and t'won't change the outcome. And, if he doesn't accept the outcome properly, he won't be improving his own game, will he? -
Oxford will never be the same ...

If one listens carefully to what Dan Lanning said in his post-game presser (about the decision to on-side kick) they had planned and practiced for that given certain conditions during the kickoff as exhibited by the opponent. They thought about it on the first kickoff after the FG, then again after the 1st TD, but then, after the third possession the conditions were right and the decision was made to do it. This means is that it was a carefully calculated, practiced and rehearsed "play" that the kickoff team was well prepared to execute. It wasn't a sudden, reactive decision made on the spur of the moment. There's method to Lanning's 'madness' and that's probably why it worked so well. With Chip Kelly, those types of decisions always seemed to be ad hoc, spur of the moment, sudden decisions. Does it take 'balls' to make a calculated decision like that? Sure. But it also reflects a careful consideration of when to do it as well. Kudos to DL.

Jevon (being a Pro now) has 1st-hand experience as to why clock management is important. It's one thing the NFL teams excel at for a variety of reasons, not to mention limiting exposure to injury and getting the last score if possible.

Comedy King Again: Mike Leach is Worried About Becoming Dinosaurs
Mic replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
What can I say? Mike Leach is one of a kind - and when you think about it - the CFB could use a few more like him. In my own, weird, opinion. -
Phil Knight ought to just buy the whole plane-load. Players and all. Or ... maybe it was his? With this new 'NIL' thingy, give 'em all a gold rolex. (just kidding)

Of the most interest to me are OSU (Corvallis) and Wash. Wash looks to be a one-pony show: passing. Penix get's 'er dun - or at least until they come to Eugene. OSU is getting scary, esp at home. If there's a 'trap' game it's OSU. Except that every Duck on this team >1 season should know OSU, regardless of record, is a hard win.

No, I think David was right. Lanning wanted that 4th down play to last the full remaining 6 or 7 seconds and running back and heaving the ball at the last second did that. Game over. UCLA doesn't get a hail mary shot at anything. And secretly, I bet the Bruins were good with it.

Don't all Freshmen think that? It's kinda why the word 'Freshman' fits 'em.

Oregon Ranked No. 8 In Latest AP & Coaches Poll
Mic replied to The Kamikaze Kid's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Hopefully we don't. We didn't match up well against them. Hopefully it's someone else. But I know what you're saying. You want to see the Ducks in the Playoffs. It's gonna take a lot of pieces to fall into place for that one. -
Naw... Utah & OSU two toughest games left before the CC which the Ducks can make, if they win both of those two. One home, one away.
-
Ka-Boom! There-in lies the difference. The BIG difference. If O can distill this and bottle it they'll bring home a Championship!

Oregon Ranked No. 8 In Latest AP & Coaches Poll
Mic replied to The Kamikaze Kid's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Should be interesting to see how long it takes for either team to get back in the top 20 after they join the B!G. My guess, quite a while. -
Ah, now the dense one (me) get's it! I mean, Oregon IS a university and spelling standards have to be kept up! lol
-
The Ducks are getting better every time they play - on both sides of the ball. If this keeps up things could get really, really interesting. Bo might get a little bit of love from the Heisman crowd after this but esp if the improvement keeps up.

At least two of the signs featured on College Game Day best of from yesterday featured the word "Progrum" such as: @CollegeGameDay @CoachDanLanning @scoduckz @davidpollack47 @GoDucks #Progrum @oregonfootball @CoachDanLanning @CollegeGameDay What the heck am I missing? Is this something from social media and the kids or is the University spelling standards slipping a bit?

Just finished watching the Duke - Miami game (45-21 Duke). Duke scored the last 28 points, ended the game taking a knee inside the 5 or it could have been the last 35. 8 turnovers for Miami. The stands were virtually empty the last qtr of the game, sans the Duke fans. Mario's got a lot of things to try and fix if he wants to keep his dream job from turning into a nightmare.

You're right, but I was saying (in effect) imagine the scene IF the crowd in the Horseshoe were as loud, as active, as pumped as the Oregon fans? Translation: I want to see Autzen get bigger!

Is It Possible for Ducks to Reach CFB Playoffs?
Mic replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Well, he does live in San Diego and I imagine he covers the teams he knows best, most often. Kinda like Canzano. -
While not a complete comparison by any means (Kelly's the H.C. of course) there seems to be ONE major difference emerging in the still too-early comparison: Oregon, under Lanning & Dilly can score just as fast, just as creatively and just as explosively, BUT the Oregon Ducks are winning the T.O.P. (time of possession). Imagine a team that scores like O and then couple that somehow with keeping the ball away from the Opponent longer than you keep it. Oregon won the time of possession 33:27 to 27:33 for UCLA. What was the topic headline awhile back by McDuck? 'Ruh-Roh!'
