EagleScoutJim No. 2 Share Posted October 30 If tOSU wins, the Duck will probably face Indiana (who will likely win out). 30Duck No. 3 Share Posted October 30 It's not like with Washington, where I simply can't ever want them to win, with Ohio State, but I'm inclined to hope they lose. For quite a few weeks I've been sure that I wanted Penn State to win. It's hard to beat a good team twice in a row, so I didn't want the Buckeyes to beat the Ducks in the B!G Championship game, and Penn State just hasn't looked that good to me, and I didn't think they could beat Ohio State. But the way that the Buckeyes have played since the Ducks have me thinking that playing them again, in Indy, wouldn't be that bad. It's a home game for Penn State, they haven't beaten Ohio State in a while, Day can't win these games. So, I don't care who wins. It will probably come down to a play review.

I miss the Pac-10 and playing every team in the conference during the regular season. We still had some wacky tie breakers (e.g., 2000) but at least every team had an even schedule. If Penn St takes down tOSU, I don't see Indiana beating the Bucknuts even at home, unless they just fold after two losses and Day is out the door. I'll go with two undefeated B1G teams come December. I think I'd rather see Penn St at Lucas Oil but if Indiana survives to get there even better, although it's essentially a home game for them.

OregonDucks No. 7 Share Posted October 30 (edited) Back to the original question - I'll be pulling for Penn State. I'd rather Oregon play an undefeated Penn State in the B1G Championship Game. It'll be more entertaining with two undefeated top 3 teams playing for the conference championship game (should be #1 vs. #2) with the winner getting a first round college football playoff bye. Plus, it's another opportunity for the Ducks to knock off another B1G blue blood, which will never get old. Go Ducks!!! Keep handling business and getting better every week... GeotechDuck No. 8 Share Posted October 30 I guess I am pulling for tOSU. If they roll Penn State, then it makes that win look better for Oregon and probably helps with the at-large playoff discussion, if necessary. I have not even really thought about the championship game matchup yet. Lots of football left and one slip up and the championship game could be off the table. It is extremely difficult to go undefeated.
The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 9 Share Posted October 30 Three undefeated teams makes me nervous. I guess that makes me root for tOSU but if I had to bet I'd pick PSU to win. I think tOSU lost their mojo at Autzen. I'm also hoping that tOSU does just good enough every year to not fire Day much like SUC did for those glorious Helton years.

KCDuck1 No. 11 Share Posted October 30 EastBayDuckDad & OregonDucks, If our Ducks have a choice WRT B1G championship game opponent, I suggest OBDs take PSU. OBDs owe Penn State for that beat down in the '94 seasons' Rose Bowl; OBDs have never played the Nittany Lions since then; there has been no opportunity to thank PSU for that instruction. Were we to play Indiana, that I recall came out to Oregon and beat us in the pre-season under Coach Belotti, that opponent would be great, as well. Indiana has been somewhat down for the last 40 or more years, so I am not as interested in playing and defeating them. OBDs will have that opportunity next year; the Indiana coach seems to be a worthy opponent; and the IU team will be ready, regardless. In the meantime, we have games with Michigan, Maryland, Wisconsin, and UW that demand OBD's attention. Let's play and win those games, first. If OBDs measure up, as we all believe OBDs will, then there will be a week or so to speak with and prepare for our next B1G opponent. Best regards to OBDs as they Prep for the Wolverines. Let's not waste this opportunity to train these unusual critters. It is 74 degrees in Ontario/S. Michigan today, and the temperature is predicted to be 65 degrees for the game. Wow! It won't be this warm in Madison. I remain VR, KCDuck1

Babyjesus615 No. 13 Share Posted October 30 Penn St deserves to take down tOSU. They have a better team buy-in for the season. They didn't spend $20 million on a supposed all-star team that is going to take them all the way. They play gritty, hard football, not too dissimilar from Oregon in their close wins. I would rather the Ducks go up against them in the B1G championship for a couple reasons. Historically rematches don't favor the 1st winner (yes I am aware of Washington last season but that's an outlier). The second, Penn St is not putting a ton of points on the board this season. With Oregon's efficient offense, I feel like we can score, get ahead, and then keep the game out of reach until time runs out. But then again, I don't know anything!

This. tOSU winning makes Oregon's resume better, eliminates Penn St from the B10 championship game, and will result in either tOSU or Indiana as the Ducks' opponent at the end of the regular season. It also eliminates the very real (and ridiculous) possibility of being undefeated but still being left out of the conference title game because of the tiebreaker rules.

The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 20 Share Posted October 30 For me to root for Penn St someone better triple dog swear the OBD wins a three way tie breaker if it happens. No idea how that would end up happening but it sounds pretty good to me. 1 1
Duckman60 No. 23 Share Posted October 30 I like all the reasons to root for PSU, there is another bigger and longer term reason to root for them: Recruiting! Who is our biggest recruiting competition in the Big 10? OSU, not PSU or Indiana. If OSU loses to PSU and then to Indiana (hopefully) it would probably knock them out of the tournament. Now Day has to recruit against an Oregon team that went to the tournament and hopefully won, tough to do. And if it cost Day his job they have to do a total reset of their program. At OSU a reset is not as bad as it would be for most schools but they would be at least 1 step behind behind Oregon. It might take them 2-3 years to catch up. GO PSU!
noDucknewby No. 24 Share Posted October 30 (edited) Besides the fact that I generally root against tOSU, a Penn State win serves us better IMHO. Currently there are 4 teams vying for 2 spots. A Buckeye loss pretty much eliminates them from the B1G Championship. For me the best scenario is for Penn State to eliminate tOSU, then the Buckeyes knock off Indiana at home. IF Oregon and Penn State win out then that gives us a top five matchup in the B1G Championship game, the winner then would have an excellent chance at the #1 seed in the CFP (certainly no lower than 2). That said, if we take care of our business then this one game probably won't matter either way. Edited October 30 by noDucknewby
David Marsh No. 25 Share Posted October 30 Root OSU... the obvious reason is that it eliminates an undefeated team from the conference championship race. It would suck to be the number 1 or 2 team and be potentially left out of our conference championship game. Granted... just making the playoff is all that matters. A team that has to play in the first round that didn't play in a conference championship game has to play just as many games as a team with a first round bye. OhQuack No. 30 Share Posted October 30 Just a thought, but with the playoff as it is now, does strength of schedule really matter anymore? If you can get yourself into a position to win the conference championship, then you're in the playoff and get a 1st round bye. So if that's the case, wouldn't we want to root for the "worst" team to play against in the conference championship in order to give OBD the best chance at getting the victory and the 1st round bye? Grandpa Duck No. 33 Share Posted October 30 Oh, Quack, strength of schedule is still a major factor for teams that win their conference championship. Here is the protocol the committee uses to rank teams: "From the CFP website: "The selection committee ranks the teams based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field, using conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and comparison of results against common opponents to decide among teams that are comparable." When the committee seeds the bracket, the team ranked #1, in theory, will have an easier route to the championship than the teams ranked below them. In the quarterfinals, they will play the winnier of the the game between the teams ranked 8-9, avoiding teams 5,6 and 7, assuming the lower numbers (higher ranked teams), win in round one. Also for the quarter-finals, immediately below #1, in their half of the whole bracket, will be the conference champion team ranked #4, avoiding the teams ranked 2 and 3, again assuming the lower numbers adveance to the semi-finals. So, in the semifinals, #1 plays #4. If the lower numbered ranked teams advance to the finals, #1 will play #2. So strength of schedule is used in the bracket seeding, and being #1 means, in theory, you will be paired against teams with poorer rankings than the team ranked #2, and so forth.
