Quackanadian No. 1 Share Posted December 23, 2021 Anyone who is familiar with Machiavelli's writings would be familiar with the notion that when you take over a new program (or kingdom), the previous regime should be replaced in it's entirety. One major argument for this is that their loyalty to the former coach (or king) would be a bond that is hard to break, and could cause negativity. I understand the desire to keep the D Line Coach Joe and some others, but he was hired by and loyal to MC. Also, things get stale over time for the smaller chess pieces. So, I agree it's time for a completely new and fresh overhaul of the coaches. Young. Energetic. Knowledgeable. Relentless. Up-to-date. That's what is needed IMHO. Great point, A lot is said about continuity being a plus in a coaching staff. That would be actively worked against with a coach from the old staff staying with a new one. HappyToBeADuck No. 5 Share Posted December 23, 2021 For me, it's always sad to see people or coaches leave or get the boot. Familiarity makes us feel comfortable. Maybe safe from the unknown... Wish nothing but the best for all the coaches in their future endeavors. As I look at the company, I founded 42 years ago, I see no one on the staff from 14 years ago. That's when I turned the company over to my youngest son. He was young, energetic, creative and fresh out of college with 2 degrees. He systematically eliminated the geritol staff he inherited from me. He hired like minded, young energetic, creative, workaholics to continue to build the company. He and his team do in a business quarter what my team did in a year. Here's to the new youth movement taking place on Oregon football. I wish Coach Lanning the same success my son has had. 35 years old is a great number. I also hope we aren't seeing the Peter Principle again. I think the gamble on Lanning is exactly what the Oregon Football Program is all about. We aren't about settling for an assistant. We also aren't about going backward, or copying what has already been done. It is an exciting time again. I love it! However, I'm sure he will land on his feet and if it is for less money, then I'm sure his contract calls for the make-up payment. I am not sure any retained coach would have any loyalty to the guy who left and didn't offer to take him with the "dearly departed/dead to me" former coach. PittDuck No. 9 Share Posted December 23, 2021 Unfortunately, it has become “part of the game” for those schools interested in the super league JJ (rightly) predicts here on OBDF. It almost killed me when so many years of OBD coaching experience was (were?) shown the door along with Helfrich. He knew better than to run a dive ( hadn't worked all second half of the game- twice in third and one situations). Smith - you’d be absolutely wrong about NO discussions of “Niccolo Machiavelli”on the Miami forums …………just last week we were discussing whether he was the best Italian-American Running back or was it Alan Ameche?
