I guess it's better to be Oregon than New Mexico this year. (Who could have known?) I looked up Miami, half expecting to see "head coach".

It wouldn't make it under the bridge at Harrisburg. There are other obstacles in the river as well. When it is inflated, it is anchored and there are guy wires attached all around it to hold it up. Otherwise, it would topple over in even a slight wind. 65 feet high makes for a very big sail.

Unlimited scholarships is what led to "Blue Bloods" becoming and staying "Blue Bloods". The 85 scholarship limit brought more parity to college football. Today with NIL, it is possible for a team to get over the limit by simply paying enough NIL to cover the tuition plus. That is a little more acceptable to me as there is no such thing as unlimited NIL money.

I understand that Bowl Season is not the same as it once was, but it definitely still matters... to a lot of people. Just look at Arizona State last year. The football staff and especially the athletes got the wind knocked out of them when the University decided they would not be going to any bowl game before the season started. They were not expecting to get to a big name bowl. They would have been happy to go to the "Little Sisters of the Poor" Bowl. For many athletes, getting to a Bowl game is their only chance to be on TV. The fact that maybe only families and friends might be interested in watching cuts down on the Bowl attendance and viewership. Many bowl are sponsored by the city that hosts it. Venues look for Bowls; Bowls don't generally look for venues. It helps the local economy. Family, friends, and fans, that can afford it, all make the trip, which supports local businesses. Speaking of the economy, all bowl games are driven by economics. Economically sponsoring a bowl game has to make economic sense to the sponsoring companies. TV will not get involved if it makes no economic sense to do so. Since all of these Little Sister Bowls have sponsors and are on TV, they must matter to someone. All this is not to say that Bowl Season cannot be thought out a little better... but it might be better if individual bowls were allowed to make most of those decisions. Paying NIL would be helpful to the athletes, but for the Little Sisters Bowl, it's not going to change anyone's mind about sitting out because those athletes just want to come and play. Bowl eligibility at 6-6 (50%) was a raising of the bar at the time it was first imposed. Becoming bowl eligible at 6 wins matters. To raise that bar to 7 wins just so we can have fewer bowls? Let the economy decide how many bowls we need. People don't have to be interested in watching every bowl. The stadiums don't have to be full. A whole lot of students just want to play one more game. If someone wants to flip the bill, I say let the kids play.

Other Nike clients will also take Nike's money. Nike wouldn't mind being on every field that use their uniforms and shoes. They might pay a little more for the privilege in Autzen. But that is determined by viewership more than anything.

When I was a kid, growing up in the LA area, you could by 7-8 houses for that much money.

OK, I'm going to wade into the water here. The goalposts were moved incrementally. The guy who moved them the most was Rich Brooks. It took a LONG, LONG time, but Rich Brooks took the Ducks from VERY BAD to bowl eligibility, to the Rose Bowl. If he didn't jump to the NFL, there is no telling what he could have accomplished over the next few years. Rich Brooks moved the goalposts from "We just want to beat the Beavers" to "We want to be in a bowl game every year". That move was MASSIVE. Bellotti moved the goalposts from "We want to be in a bowl game every year" to "We want to be in a good bowl game every year." Chip said his goal was to play football in January every year. That meant New Years Six or better. He moved the goalposts (in our minds) to "We want Alabama!" Later we realized that we didn't have the dudes in the trenches to regularly take on the 'Bamas of the world. With the goalposts so close to as far as they can go, all of the heavy lifting of moving them had been done. MC moved the goalposts closer by proving that you can recruit to Oregon and did a great job of doing so. DL has moved the goalposts as far as they can go. The goal is to be the National Championship hunt every year and win it all on at least a semi-regular basis. Not only does the Oregon fan base believe this, but the rest of the CFB world is starting to expect it too.

I try not to look for stuff to worry about. I doubt that Sr. will be a problem, and I trust Dan Lanning to handle the problem in an appropriate manor if it should arise in the future.

I didn't read the article, but want to comment on the idea. I can see why some might want this: As many have pointed out here, the scholarship limit can be gotten around by simply offering someone enough NIL money to more than pay for their tuition. Good point. Scholarship limits brought more parity to college football and other sports. Programs with unlimited funds can simply buy over 100 scholarships. The problem I see with this idea is that it hurts, and almost eliminates the walk-on athlete, especially in the Power Conference level. Jonathan Smith was a walk-on at OSU and lead the Beavers to their highest heights ever. Stetson Bennett walked on at Georgia and won two consecutive National Championships. Thousands of walk-ons have made it on to the field without a scholarship... and even passed up scholarship players in front of them. 85 players is right at the scholarship level and 95 players is only 10 over. Most teams get kickers, punters and other specialists via walk-ons. Where is there room for anyone else?

Ever since Dan Lanning gave his "Do you have goals?" speech, I thought of a couple goals he might have: 1) at least 410 NCAA football wins as a coach (that would put him past Joe Paterno). 2) at least 8 NCAA football National Championships as a coach (which would put him past Nick Saban). Anybody else have a goal or two that Dan Lanning might like??
