Joel Klatt Calls Out Terrible CFP Bracket

Recommended Posts

Fox Sports' Joel Klatt sounded off on the first-ever 12-team College...

He's upset that Oregon's success is being rewarded with the hardest path to the championship.

Of course he's 100% right.

The absolute worst take is that "it doesn't matter, you still have to beat the good teams to win it all." Actually, no. It's way easier to win it all if you have an easier path. We should be playing a "cupcake" in the Quarterfinals, yet we will be playing teams we might be barely favored to win against.

That fact of the matter is that ranking teams 1-12 and setting up the bracket the way it is with the byes is fine...

But the problem is that because of the conference champs getting those byes it messes with the entire ranking the teams 1-12.

Tenn and Ohio State aren't the 8th and 9th ranked teams, they're higher than that they were just jumped by lower teams.

Easiest way to fix this is with a reranking after the first round. But that isn't going to happen. I think the assumption, and wrongly so, was that conference champions would at least be ranked in the top 5 for the byes.

LOL. I'm sure his employer Disney/ABC/ESPN (who owns the SEC contract) was not happy about his take...

Rece was very careful with the words he used...he did not say an "easy" path, or "harder" path to the 'Natty, but a favorable path.

It’s amazing people building this system couldn’t see this train wreck coming down the tracks.  It’s not like this was some non-obvious result. It’s not like they didn’t have access to a system that already works.

It’s unfortunate that the Ducks will suffer the consequences of being the top seed in a year where all of these flaws are exposed but not yet fixed.

Win your conference and you’re in nothing else is guaranteed.  Reseeding is a great idea. If they can’t fix the conf champs getting a bye at least reseed to help mitigate the damage from that system

In hindsight, I think they should have backed off the top four conference champs to the top eight.. Things would look way different if ASU and BSU were seeded seven and eight.

Always give the BIG and SEC conference champions byes, then seed everyone else by ranking.

Does anyone truly believe ASU, and BSU should be awarded top 4 seeds?

Based on AP poll…#1 Oregon plays winner of BSU vs Ind

#2 Georgia plays winner T vs ASU

#3 ND.       Plays winner tOSU vs. Clemson
#4 Texas.  Plays winner PSU vs SMU

That bracket appears to make more sense to me.

The No. 1 Seed currently has the most difficult path?

That would happen in OUR year…

Fine.  Beat the Bastards…ALL of them.

If we win the natty, we would have one of the best national championships ever won. It would be very hard for people to debate that.

You will never obtain favorable results from a faulty design.

Oregon and Georgia should have 1st round byes. After the 1st round games are played, Oregon should open against the lowest-ranked team still standing in a 14-team field and Georgia the second lowest-ranked team. This is how the NFL with decades of Playoff experience does things.

Second. LOSE THE BOWLS! Do not try to serve two masters. Using traditional bowls and playing the champ game in Dixie equates to 5 of the 7 PO sites in Dixie as is the case this and next season. Play games on the home fields of the higher-ranked teams before the College Super Bowl or at least until the semifinal round.  It isn't always sunny in Philadelphia, Buffalo, Green Bay and Chicago. 😁So what! It's FOOTBALL.

Third. Adopt and disclose standard metrics for rankings and seedings. This is not difficult. Model the CFB Committee on how the CBB Committee operates. Adopt Quads or the equivalent, to value wins. There is no way a G5 team with close wins against Wyoming and Nevada should be seeded anywhere other than No. 14. Boise has a great player and a very good loss. So Boise like OBD and UGA gets a bye?

The CFB Committee pays for advanced SOS and SOR stats that are not available to the public and seemingly ignores these resources. SOS is at the top of the list for the Committee to take into consideration. This did not happen this season. Is the goal to incent teams and conferences to play the easiest possible schedules?

Why in the heck is Texas opening at Ohio State next season when both teams are in the field in 2024 with the best OOC win being the Longhorns win on the road versus a 7-5 Michigan team? Why is OBD opening with No. 1 FCS seed 13-0 Montana State (and counting) and not Portland State? (Rob?) Why Oklahoma State and not Tulsa?

Fourth. From a proverbial mile away you could see this train wreck coming. From the first rankings release it was apparent that the 5th seed, while having to play one more game would have the easier path to the championship game. Senseless.

Come 2025/26, the Powers-That-Be (the Power 2) must insist on the Committee being less opaque, and the Committee's final rankings matching the PO seeding. If you want 5 conference champs in the mix, fine. But No. 9 Boise State should be the 14th seed opening at Texas and No. 16 Clemson should be the 13th seed opening at Penn State. (BTW - how do you figure that a Clemson team that just defeated SMU should be No. 16 with SMU No. 10?)

I like Dan's attitude: Winning a championship should not be easy! But, like the NFL, the best team in the regular season should have the easiest path to the Super Bowl. The regular season should not be a whimsey.

Obliterate Ohio State! Trash Tennessee!

Ahhh Yesss.  I believe those unavailable "strength of" metrics may be the the SOB (BlueBlood) and SOP (Profit).

Which in the current committee based selection process likely supercedes SOS or SOR!

Don't matter.  Line em up and dem Ducks will knock em down!

I've never been one to subscribe what might be called conspiracy theories, but it really seems like the Establishment doesn't want our red blood ducks to win it all.

Anyway, I have to go make a new tin foil hat. The one I'm wearing has a hole in it.

I like Nick Saban's suggestion in the show yesterday that teams play more conference games in lieu of the CCG.   Changing the PO ranking by Conf Champ based on that one game is stupid and unfair, especially in the age of only 2 real power conferences.

But look at it this way, we have 2 teams in the former/real Pac-12 that made it to the top 4!   How about that!

Whether he believes it nor not, it's a great thing to say when you're leading a team. It means there's no opening for anyone in the program to feel sorry for themselves, or think about "what-ifs", or be apprehensive. When the boss says this, you gotta believe it. Just win the next game.

That said, everyone knows Ducks got screwed.

Joe Klatt's sort of longwinded explanation on The Herd got it right: Yes, OBD did get screwed, but not by the Committee. They got screwed by the decision made last year to give 1st round byes to the four highest ranked conference champions. That resulted in Boise State and Arizona State having to be placed in the top 4 by the Committee which in turn pushed Texas & Penn St back to 5 & 6.

But in any case, I think we should line up behind Dan Lanning and be as deliriously happy as he was on Saturday to have gone undefeated in the regular season and won the Big 10 Championship. This season is already a great success no matter what happens in the crapshoot of a single elimination playoff, though another victory over Ohio St in the Rose Bowl would be extremely sweet!
