Duck QB Signee Sagapolutele to Enter Transfer Portal

Recommended Posts

There could be a number of reasons for this. My guess is the QB room is quite full and he doesn’t see playing time in the near future.

Wow.  The good news just keeps coming.

It was always speculated that early playing time was important for him. With Cal now lacking any QBs it wouldn’t be a leap to think he wants flip back to Cal where he’d be the presumptive starter immediately.

Nothing about the Oregon QB room has changed (barring a silent commit from a transfer) so it must have more to do with playing time at Cal than feelings towards Oregon.

1. Never understood why he flipped to the Ducks.

2. Expected him to leave at some point anyway.

3. Absolutely not surprised by this announcement.

The QB room wasn't full when he "committed?" These young men seem to be getting NO or BAD advice.

He did take part in bowl practice as an early enrollee. It probably hit him then how daunting his climb would be.

Excellent point. Nothing changed since he signed. Did he even get a locker assignment?

The No. 1 seed Oregon Ducks were the lone undefeated team in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. However, Oregon suffered its first loss of the year in a 41-21 disappointment...

Good article but Montana State is NOT D1.

We are not desperate at QB, nor are we in rebuild mode. The comments Tez made about Dante Moore's progress and readiness to take over is especially encouraging. It could be that the other guys are also much further along in their development as well and that reality hit Jaron when he started early practices.

I feel like we are in good hands with the current QB room. His late commitment was more confusing than anything.

Maybe someone from the Bucknuts had a conversation with him in Pasadena. The prospect of throwing to #4 would certainly be enticing!

Bingo.

I will admit that I did not understand why we were even recruiting him because 1) the QB room we already had, and 2) we will probably go to the portal for an experienced QB when Dante Moore's time has run out. (Since he appears to be who they are counting on)

I was afraid of this. It never made sense to me to sign two high school QBs in the same class, it just guarantees one of them will transfer and you've used up a scholarship that could've been used to sign someone in another position of need.

Based on HS performance I actually would have preferred Jaron than Akili. He seems to be further along with his development.

He has a clear path to start at Cal.  Oregon's QB room is full of talent and with Moore as the starter designee  with three years of eligibility he saw the hand writing on the wall.     I don't see this as much of a loss.

I think the future of 5 star recruits will end up being...

Step1. Find early playing time anywhere you can.

Step 2. Go to the highest bidder for a year or two.

Step 3. Finish up on a playoff level team.

I can't see 4 1/2 -5 star guys waiting 2-3 years for their turn on top ten teams anymore. I think raising your NIL value ASAP will become the ultimate deciding factor and that means immediate playing time. Highschool recruiting will still be important but that may also be for becoming that step 3 landing spot when they're really ready to contribute on a winning team.

This is the nature of College football today. Sign then unsign. My favorite formula is let the scholarships get eaten up by D-Lineman. Let the NIL pay out for D Lineman as they are the most impactful spot on the roster other than QB. Problem is, QB is getting serious cash and you have 3-5 of them. Keep 2 highly touted recruits and then 'Purchase' a top 5 2 year veteran. He will have 2-3 years of playing time. See if the cream rises to the top.

Herbert is thriving in LA, Bo has exceeded expectations and is a ROY candidate, and Dillon should get drafted despite his size. I don’t think Oregon will have any problems attracting QB talent either from high school or the portal.

Over at a pay site....it was reported that Jaron Sag. took a long look at Dante Moore in practice, and knew he could not beat out Moore and start as a freshman--which was his goal to do somewhere.

Can't fault him for wanting to play right away, and is another indirect confirmation of the talents of QB Moore...

Kind of wish he took Dante's time at UCLA as a cautionary tale.

I think that’s the problem. The vast majority of true freshman aren’t anywhere near being in a condition to start.. just ask Dante.

In the NFL it’s even more problematic. How many rookies successfully start (Last year’s class of 4+ multi-year starters like Bo are the exception)? If they do, their careers often end early due to both injuries and playing for teams in ‘rebuild’ mode (Mariota at Tenn is a great example).

i think I buy into the idea that he saw what he was going to be up against, not just next year, but for the years that follow as well. Smart for the kid to find a team where he could be the #2 for a year, learn the system, and let a team get built around him. My $0.02

All I can add is I went ahead and looked up "arm talent" in the Webster's dictionary and there was a picture of Dante Moore.

How that impacts QB recruiting in this particular season certainly up to debate.

Just like the freshman WR at tOSU, having a guy at a key spot just is a thing. Spring can't come too soon but I feel pretty good today. Biggins was just on 750am saying DM is a go.

I recognize why Lanning signed him. Don't recognize why Sagapolutele came here expected to play immediately.  We have a super stacked QB room.  Three guys that can start anywhere.  Right now.

Sagapolutele showed me he misunderstood what he was getting into.  Some of that may be ego.  Who knows.  What I do know was there is no way snow will survive hell, and he wasn't going to start in 2025.  Somebody gave him some very bad advice.

Not in any of the top power two programs that's for sure.

He'll probably start at Cal against ACC competition. Assuming he goes to Cal.

I'm absolutely sure that Lanning only offered him the chance to compete. Lanning isn't the kind of coach who guarantees anything.

I can’t fault a kid for wanting to play sooner rather than later. If he didn’t think that he would have a shot at Oregon for 2-3 years, if at all, then I understand his decision.

The only question for me is - why did he sign with Oregon in the first place, if his goal was to play right away? Any internet search would have shown him that we have a 5-star transfer QB from UCLA and a 4-star QB who has been on the team for 2 years.

He’s the kind of guy that will be riding the bench at all four until his eligibility runs out. That is, until he figures out that he has to put in the work. If that ever happens.

Maybe after a couple years at Cal or ?, he'll get developed into the quality QB he already appears to think he is, and will want to transfer to a CFP team.  Lanning can always keep the relationship open just in case.  But he does appear to have an it's all about me attitude at present.

Absolutely agree with this Charles.  BUT I will say his comment about not feeling he was a priority made him sound like a prima donna.

I think its best for him and Oregon that he moved on.
