  1. If I’m going to lose him then I’m going to pay him to keep him from walking. It’s a calculated risk that I would be willing to take if I’m Lanning or Mullen.
  2. The positive impact of that loss in 2019 is that it allowed guys who suffered through the 2016 season to end their careers on a high note. Losing by 5 TD’s to LSU wouldn’t have been as fun as winning the Rose Bowl
  3. Oregon is #2 in total offense. This is a product of not only great talent, but making the right offensive calls at the right time to get the ball in their hands. Bo might cover up a few warts that may exist with a less experienced QB because he’s like a coach on the field. However, that’s also a product of a good QB Coach (Stein). I’m sure DL will do what it takes to keep him around.
  4. There is a very simple answer to this question: Jill Cohen. His priorities shifted once he started dating her in 2015. He no longer has all 24 hours in the day to dedicate to football.
  5. If Oregon wants to run with the big dogs they need to pay their assistants accordingly. This means paying them enough to keep them from taking G5 jobs and making lateral moves as assistants on other P5 teams. If you look at the top 20 paid coordinators in the link below they all make around $2M/year (Tosh makes around $1.7/year). That said, there are a few G5 jobs that pay over $2M, but I’m speaking in generalities. That kind of money won’t keep them from taking HC jobs in the P5 conferences. That’s where Saban, Meyer, etc lose their assistants. Some have made lateral moves, but those have been driven by personality differences. Guys like Pete Golding, Tosh, Nussmeier and Mario left because they either disliked working for Saban or he told them he was replacing them. In the case of Brent Venables, he left OU for Clemson because Stoops hired his brother to be co-DC after he was fired from Arizona. It was a lateral move and OU could’ve matched his pay if they wanted him to stay. Oregon can and should match Stein’s offers up to the going rate for top coordinators. However, if A&M wants to over-pay then I wouldn’t match their offer. https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/assistant
  6. With all of the anticipated movement this year it looks like some G5 jobs could be coming open. Jimbo is gone and it looks like Dave Aranda is standing by to be fired by Baylor, so that leaves two possible openings for Jeff Traylor from UTSA. My guess is UTSA might look at someone who is familiar with their program and who also is killing it on the coaching front. This is where Stein comes in. He’s young, but that’s where programs have been trending lately. There will be plenty of more jobs as well if Chadwell and Fritz move up from Liberty and Tulane. It would suck to lose Stein, but his resume is playing out on the national stage, so he will get scooped up sooner or later. Maybe this year. I’m sure he’ll get a raise, but that might not be enough to keep him from a head coaching job.
  7. We’re sure getting our money’s worth out of those chrome lids this year.
  8. I saw a comment on a story earlier that stated: ”Never pay a man who goes by Jimbo any more money than what is required to fix your car.”
  9. This is a great video. Pate always has his finger on the CFB pulse, so I find his stuff very informative. The biggest takeaway from this is when he said he knows “definitively” there are coaches in the mix that aren’t on anybody’s radar. We’re talking Riley to USC type of stuff. It’s at the 5:30 point in the video.
  10. I really don’t think A&M is serious about DeBoer. He’s a great coach, but they need someone who can recruit Texas and the South. DeBoer hasn’t done a really great job of recruiting the West Coast. Transfers are fine for filling gaps, but you need a solid foundation.
  11. Texas A&M is in a bit of a conundrum. They have a reputation as a big spender with little to no patience. A big name coach is going to want big money and he’s going to want it guaranteed. The reason being is if the Aggies pull the plug on him due to their lack of patience then he is going to want to be compensated. However, A&M might not want to make the same mistake they made with Jimbo. So, it might be hard for them to pry a guy away from a job who already has a good contract and job security.
  12. I remember that kick well. However, I gave him the benefit of the doubt because the playing surface looked like a half eaten taco salad.
  13. This is an interesting take that should make everyone feel a little better.
  14. I personally like Kiffin to A&M. He and Sark worked under two of the best head coaches in recent history. They’re great recruiters and offensive minded. The Aggies haven’t had a decent offense in 10 years.
  15. They don’t seem to be happy in their current coaching situation. That’s so weird. Oregon upgraded their HC bigly | CanesInSight WWW.CANESINSIGHT.COM They are so happy Mario left. Watching their offense makes me sick. It’s the complete opposite of ours.
  16. Disagree. Every team you mentioned has to come into their backyard to recruit effectively. If Lanning was in College Station he and Sark would lock Texas down. The only thing holding the Aggie football program back is their management.
  17. In all fairness to A&M, it’s a top 5 job in college football. Unlimited money, top notch facilities, fertile recruiting area, top conference, and most importantly….they’re starved for success. They’ll do anything to win. The drawbacks to coaching there are obvious. They want immediate success, so their coach will always be standing on a trap door. Also, they’re currently getting burned by a fully guaranteed contract, so their new coach likely will have a 3 year window to win the SEC and National Championship. Oh, and if he doesn’t, he only gets a percentage of his contract after getting fired.
  18. Oregon might do well to make DL a $10M/year head coach. He’s proved that he’s worthy and it’s the kind of thing great programs do to maintain stability.
  19. Here’s a novel idea. Hire a great coordinator at a modest salary and then give him time to develop and earn a bigger contract. A&M likes to throw money at the hot name and then hope they can fix their problems. They want somebody else to do the work and then buy them.
  20. It would be nice if Mario could works some magic and knock off FSU and/or Louisville. He’s always good for an inexplicable upset or two.
  21. He’s not wrong at this time. Alabama has come back and beat some good teams. Oregon has one win against a team with a winning record (Utah). Everything will get sorted out by conference championship weekend. There’s still a lot of football left and Duck fans know that a late season trip to the desert with championship (and Heisman) hopes rarely ends well.
  22. It’s as simple as this. Oregon needs to win out and they need Georgia to win out. That would effectively eliminate Texas because their best win would be against a two loss Alabama team.
