These days, I think that to be a really good NFL head coach you have to cut your teeth in the NFL. Jimmy Johnson was an anomaly. He also had the benefit of no salary cap. Pete Carroll coached New England before USC and Barry Switzer should give his Super Bowl ring to Jimmy Johnson. Those three are the only college coaches to win the Super Bowl and a college championship.
