Is Michael Penix Broken?

Recommended Posts

As we all have seen, he just hasn't been the same since Oregon game. His confidence may be shaken.

Today he played horrible making many bad throws including an almost pick at the end.

After getting sacked on his final play he had his head stuck in the equipment locker before during and after the winning kick and walked off the field under a tarp straight to the locker room. I legit think he may have had a nervous breakdown.

Your typically hear about players breaking from the stress then learning to love the game again and letting it all hang out.

But that typically happens over the course of an off season with time away from the game with consultation with loved ones, not on a short week before the biggest game of the year.

Much like Grinch getting fired, this is a real wild card to not know how things are going to go in the next game.

It has been a conundrum to say the least. If he plays like that against the Ducks, sub 60%??? It's over in a hurtful way.

My question is why were the Mutts attempting to throw on those last two downs with a chip shot field goal lined up for the win?!!

Exactly what I kept wondering. Both throws were nearly picked.

And it was pretty weird that the star QB (team leader?) couldn’t bear to watch the end of the game, and instead looked like he was hurling over the rail.

Rumor is he injured his ribs in the UO game and has still not recovered.

From afar, it absolutely looks like it could be ribs... and as most know, rib injuries suck, particularly if you're a QB playing at the FBS level.

But something definitely gave in on that guy during the Oregon game.

Sort of like Nix was hobbled last year.

That’s been my theory. I think it’s also affected his will to compete. I think the Ducks pass rush haunts his dreams. He’s been dreading next week for the past month and it shows.

The TV announcers mentioned that the UW field goal kicker missed 3 of his last 4 attempts. That could explain both the aggressiveness on the play calls and Penix hiding his face.

Washington QB Michael Penix Got Too Nervous To Watch Game-Winning Field Goal Try

After leading his team to an 11-0 record, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had a far less memorable outing in their 12th and final regular season game. It was so rough that he couldn't bare to watch his team attempt a game-winning field goal.

Penix completed just 54.5-percent of his passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns with one interception against the Washington State Cougars today. He could have had two more if Washington State's defenders had gotten better grips on the ball.

So when Washington lined up for a game-winning 42-yard field goal attempt with five seconds remaining, Penix was apparently too down on himself to even look at what was going on.

But Washington kicker Grady Goss nailed the kick to send the Huskies to 12-0 and into their final Pac-12 Championship Game with their best record in decades.

Burch and Doralus are playing some insane football right now.

I think they have another big day in them on Friday.

I never want a player to get injured. That said, just being real and not wishing for it, I don't think Penix is going to get through the conference championship game. He's going to get hit time and time again by the Ducks defense and he won't finish out the game.

No one on the OBD site should delude themselves about Penix being 'broken'. His play has not been as stellar in the last several games as it was before the Fuskys got their skin of the teeth win over Oregon. Maybe he is nursing an injury but don't count him out. They have still managed to win every game even if Penix has not looked great.

The Petulant Purple Poodle Piddlers have won on solid defense and their skill players like Odunze continuing to play at a high level even if Penix hasn't. Oregon, particularly the defense, needs to operate next Friday at the level we have seen in the last several games.

Like U$C earlier in the year, UW has been just barely getting by, eking out wins over teams they should beat by at least two scores. They nearly got beat at home by a WSU team they should have buried. That doesn't mean they won't play their best against the Ducks.

A focused, disciplined Oregon team will expose those weaknesses, but the defense will need to play even better than how they played yesterday. Without Florence it will be a taller task. Manning had a good  Civil War with a nice pick, but he was inconsistent and got a stupid PF penalty. The Fusky receivers are at a different level than OSU's and won't suffer fool's lightly.

If the front seven can get pressure on Penix and the DBs can keep Odunze and Polk from big explosive plays, it'll be a long day for the Fuskys and a fun one for OBDs. Oregon is the better team, peaking at the right time and should win by two scores. But they've gotta play lights out.

It's all relative. He was the Heisman front runner through the game against Oregon. Compared to that level of play, a 55% completion percentage, nearly 3 picks, and crying off the field under a cover after a win is in possibly broken territory to me.

This is the major key.

I feel Oregon did not game plan their defense well enough last time to make this consistent enough. It might take putting a double team on Odunze and force the Huskies other playmakers to step up. They have them without a doubt but Odunze is their biggest threat.

The other thing the defense really needs to lock down is the Washington run game. It's not a prolific run game but it's plenty good. In the last meeting their RB got 100 yards against us and that was more than enough to keep the Husky offense on track on a regular basis. Shutting down the run will allow them to really get after Penix because they'll be in more forced into passing situations, they usually want to pass but don't let them pass on their terms.

Penix had a similar meltdown following the game with us. Although it’s not unreasonable to speculate regarding his emotional stability, it doesn’t seem to affect him come game time. Emotional control in a championship-level quarterback is usually a given, but the building pressure of a no loss season on his star could be causing DeBoer to break out the mental duck tape more often  than he’d like.

Perhaps Washington's Penix is suffering from projectile dysfunction.

On a more serious note, East Bay is probably correct. I assume that UW will play their best football in the championship game. regardless what their issues are.

That said, is it possible that opponents are beginning to understand how to defend UW? Considering how prolific the offense was in the first half of the season, the results against ASU, OSU. and WSU are suprising. If their offense is based on timing, perhaps playing tight man to man (and risking being beaten badly by Odunze) lengthens the time Penix has to hold the ball, making them more vulnerable to a pass rush. The receivers other than Odunze made very little contribution in the last two games. Perhaps the solution is, as they say in basketball, to :"let him (Odunze) get his points" but clamp down on all the others.

A related point. I gather that the UO usually does not move defenders from side to side, and I do not know whether it is feasible to modify schemes at this point. I would be tempted to put Kyree Jackson on Odunze full time and play them straight up. Florences's absence strengthens the case for this, I think.

DL and the staff certainly do not need any help from me. I am just curious whether a better approach than the one in Seattle is possible.

This!

I never played football, but I played highly competitive soccer. And in one of our last games, we played the national player of the year in the Semis at Regionals.

It was my job to never leave her side and never let her get the ball without a fight.

By the end of the game, I had a yellow card and she had stopped even trying—we hung out at midfield and chatted.

Oh, and we won the game and advanced further than any Oregon team before us.

Sorry for the trip down memory lane, but the strategy works.

Looks to me like the Mighty Oregon Ducks will shatter Michael Penix long before the likes of the Miami Dolphins or Detroit lions ever get a chance.

All of the 'broken Penix' off color joking aside, Triphib's observation is not only the funniest of the day but IMO pretty darn accurate. He is not the same QB technically (maybe emotionally too) that sqeaked out a win against OBD six weeks ago.

Almost all of the Fusky tight wins since the Oregon game have involved someone other than Penix rising (sorry) to the occasion and pulling them to a victory.

While I believe that he will play a better game against Oregon than he has the last several opponents, Penix has shown weaknesses that DL, Tosh and crew will be able to exploit. The Ducks are at least one offensive TD and one defensive stop better than UW going into Vegas. Probably more if OBD can play four quarters of complete football.

If Oregon's defense can:

Pressure Penix into quick decisions and throws with smart blitzing and a double dose of Dorlus and Burch;

Keep Odunze from going off with strategic situational double teams and deep safety help as needed;

Bottle up the UW run game with sound D-line gap integrity;

Keep the short passing game in check with disciplined ILB play;

...then Oregon will win.

The major concern I have with the Fusky defense is that they have played well in the 4th qtr. Trice has been effective on the edge and  Muhammad has been close to a lock down DB in coverage. But if Oregon runs it's offense like it has the past 6 weeks, gets Bucky and James going (they should as UW is suspect against the run) and Bo distributes the ball, they are two scores better than the Purple Poodles.

And please, oh please don't let this game be a three point affair in the 4th. The only place where Fusky has a relative advantage is with their kicker. Oregon's main vulnerability is a potential replay of October 14 and needs to be up by those two scores late in the game.

Im not quite sure how people derive the mentally broken aspect independent of an injury caused emotional reaction.

Watching him be escorted/ helped off the field with someone supporting his throwing arm looked more like an injured player, possibly thinking his season might be in jeopardy and hiding the emotions of recognizing its all over.

Can anyone name a QB who was uninjured who didn't celebrate an undefeated regular season? It just seems highly implausible that he was having a breakdown independent of another factor like an injury.

I think there is some sort of injury making him think he might be done and that would make laying 7.5 a steal.

Not sure how broken he might be but the Ducks need to hit him hard and often from the start.

Maybe Vegas knows something but the Ducks are favored by 9.

I had this same thought.

Many defenses do this type of scheme but OR seems to always stick to field and boundary side corners. I don't know how much such a change might impact them. Obviously a question for people who know way more than we do.

It was very weird but he seemed fine in the post game interviews. And I would think he would have been in the injury tent and/or being attended to if he had a physical injury. The walk off the field did show that coach/staffer holding on to his left arm, but not necessarily supporting it - maybe just his way of guiding him through the crowd.

Regardless, he sure hasn't seemed 100% the last half of the season...

Sure looked like Penix was banged up late in the game against Oregon.  Here's my comments following the game back on October 14th.....

"Second, I have to take exception to the fourth-down play with two minutes left.  I was yelling at the TV for Oregon to punt the ball, and for many of the reasons noted above.  Also, Penix was banged up at that point, and one more hit may have put him out of the game."

Please let me by clear.  I do not support injuring players, or playing outside of the rules.  That said, Oregon's D-Line was playing great in the second half, and was getting to Penix.  Most likey he would have taken another hit because he has a tendency to hold on the to the ball.

The headline to this topic could be on both Duck and fuskies boards and I'm alright with that.

I'm no pop psychologist but Penix remains a dangerous threat at QB. He releases the ball fast which is tough on pass rushers and had been known for his accuracy, which has suffered lately. Our coverage of his receivers will be key to limiting the dawgs' passing attack. Their run game isn't going to beat the Ducks D, provided we don't get suckered by something like that little trick play that bought them mucho yards at the end of their last game.

IMO, no, no such luck.  I think he's been struggling a bit because his team is struggling and perhaps the pressure is getting to him a bit; the Heisman talk, the Championship game talk and then the talk about the CFP Playoffs.

Unlike Bo Nix, this young man hasn't been thru the wars.  Certainly not like Nix has.  The narrow escape yesterday against WSU may have shaken the confidence of UW as a team a bit but I strongly expect them to come out against Oregon next Friday "loaded for bear".  The problem  may be, though, this bear is even bigger and stronger than it was back in October.  And they won't be meeting in Husky Stadium.

OBD should run away with this.

This is UW coach on the end of the game and how Penix is doing:

SATURDAYOUTWEST.COM

Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb comments on Michael Penix Jr.'s health ahead of the Pac-12...

I've got no further comment on this subject. We'll just have to see how he plays and how the game goes.

It would really stink if he's played like crap in all of the games since we played him and suddenly balls-out against us again.
