fred flintstone No. 17 Share Posted October 6 USC will be no threat to Oregon or other elite teams for many years to come. I suspect Riley will be at USC for a minimum of 2 more years due to admin politics and then the need to upgrade players takes a minimum of 2 years when the barn is nearly empty. The real issue at USC is not directly about the team, it's about athletic directors that are incompetent.

Helton and Riley are both 3-2 this year, and Helton has a pretty good chance to get a better record this year. He just might turn Georgia Southern's football program around. There aren't a lot of coaches who are good fits as head coach of the spoiled children, but Helton is a pretty decent coach. At Oregon coaches leave and struggle, at sc coaches leave and do much better. Lane Kiffin is doing well at Ole Miss ranked #9. Orgeron went on to win a national title. Clay Helton is turning around Georgia Southern. Sarkisian is killing it at Texas, ranked #1. Maybe Riley would do well to hope he gets fired and can go on to coach a real program.

USC could very well have won both games. But I think it might actually be harder for Easter coast teams to come west than West Coast teams to go east. West Coast teams can reasonably practice in the morning and a 9am start time isn't that crazy. But how do you reasonably train for a game that starts at 6pm PST (9pm east cost). It was OREGON and Chip Kelly with the "blur" offense that put the fear of God; and a needed primary shift in the SEC from Ole timey trench warfare football, to what we saw under Chip. The SEC, and many of the Saban "coaching tree" coaches (Kiffin, Sarkesian, Orgeron, etc) acquired positions in the conference formally known as the PAC, to learn and expand upon the new "offensive paradigm shift" that occurred during that 10 year stretch in and around Chips 4 very successful seasons as Head Coach. They took that knowledge base back to the SEC and instituted more prolific offenses in that conference and now "getting playmakers open and free in space" is what most successful SEC teams employ in their offenses. Have to hand it to them for looking beyond their hubris and embracing the new approach to offensive football. But not all of what is good and competitive in NFL-Lite can be layed at the feet of the SEC, or the coaching trees that arise from said teams within that conference. As per usual it is the "talking heads" and the current narrative that is being pushed that convinces us otherwise. Also, when does a "coaching tree" end for a particular coach and starts anew for one of his prodigies that begins to have successes, that meet or exceed their mentors? (Here's looking at you Sir Dan Lanning). Either way NFL-Lite continues to evolve to....whatever it is going to become. I am grateful, at least for now, that OBD will continue to be part of it all. "Riley wasted the 2023 season, and that wasted year put USC well behind Oregon in recruiting and portal acquisitions." I agree with the author that USC should have made a change in the defensive staff sooner (as early as the bowl loss to Tulane). USC wasted a tremendous opportunity with Caleb Williams the last 2 years. If USC made the college football playoffs last year, it would have created more buzz around the program and potentially ignited their recruiting. They seem stagnant as a program with Riley and I'm not sure that he is capable of building the program where they want to be (remember he took over an established program from Bob Stoops, like Chip Kelly did from Mike Bellotti). Oh well. USC being down benefits Oregon, as we continue to get the top California recruits, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Glad you mentioned OREGON and CK brought the blur offense. Without Oregon CK might have just been another mediocre coach trying something new, like he has been everywhere else since Oregon. The OREGON system CK was brought into is slowly getting the credit it deserved for CK's success. This weekend should give the pundits another data point to ponder on their love affair with CK. Tosu, where CK serves under his assistant, as an assistant. This is an interesting dynamic and one that doesn't always end well. Having an assistant as somebody who use to be your boss often backfires. With a guy with an ego like CK it might be something to watch. Another plot line is Ryan Day, even with a 2nd ranked team, is on the hot seat. If he loses to Oregon, and the offense sputters, it might be interesting to watch the pressure build.
