Autzen Stadium To Host College Football Playoff Game

 

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon football team will play one final game in Autzen Stadium this season as the Ducks were announced on Sunday as the No. 5 seed in the 2025 College Football Playoff field.

 

Oregon will host No. 12 seed James Madison in a first-round game on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 4:30 p.m. PT (TNT/TruTV/HBO Max). It will be the first College Football Playoff game in Autzen Stadium history as well as the first meeting between Oregon and James Madison. 

 

Season ticket holders will have until 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, to secure their season ticket holder locations. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Oregon will make its third all-time appearance in the College Football Playoff, and second in a row. The Ducks are one of four schools to have earned a CFP spot in each of the first two years of the expanded 12-team field. 

 

The winner between Oregon and James Madison will advance to the CFP Quarterfinals to face No. 4 Texas Tech at the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Oregon finished the regular season with an 11-1 overall record, earning 11-plus wins for the third year in a row and double-digit victories for the fifth consecutive season. The Ducks had wins over two teams in the final College Football Playoff top-25 rankings – No. 16 USC and No. 23 Iowa – and their lone loss came to top-ranked Indiana. 

 

The Ducks rank in the top 15 nationally for scoring offense (9th, 38.2 PPG), total offense (13th, 465.2 YPG), scoring defense (8th, 14.8 PPG) and total defense (4th, 251.6 YPG), and are top 10 in both total yards per play (9th, 7.08) and total yards per play allowed (6th, 4.16). Oregon is also the nation's most complete terms in terms of explosive plays, ranking third in plays of 20-plus yards (82) and second in 20-plus yard plays allowed (24). 

 

Oregon went 6-1 at home in the regular season and is 25-2 in Autzen Stadium under head coach Dan Lanning. The Ducks are 54-4 at home since the start of the 2017 season.

I watched the games on Friday, and thought that, 1) Tulane was MUCH tougher than JMU, and 2) a second G6 team in the field is a joke. I do not think JMU will be that much tougher than Montana State, although December in Autzen will be difficult for both competitors.

I really like Oregon’s seeding and potential matchups. (We got the Penn State path this year.)

Texas Tech looked the weakest of the top 4 seeds and Ohio State and Georgia would have to play on the other side of the bracket in the semi-finals.

We all know that Indiana is a really good football team but we’ve played them once so we have some familiarity. Hopefully the players will be motivated and the coaches learned something from the first game and will make adjustments for match #2.

Going to be tough but Oregon is as good and talented as any team in college football. Just need to bring our A game and execute.

Weather won’t be a factor. Harrisonburg, VA is colder than Eugene this time of year. The biggest factor will be talent.

Ohio State might have the slightly harder round 2 game as the #2 seed. Georgia will probably play an Ole Miss team that is in turmoil following the Kiffin departure.

I could see Miami really fired up and they do have talent, especially on defense. Of course, their HC is a liability but is Ryan Day that much better…

Should we start an over/under on ticket prices for this home playoff game?? I'm starting at $300.

As I am looking at this bracket, Oregon received the absolute BEST seeding they could possibly have gotten! I am EXCITED about this path!

This was always the Goldilocks scenario. I'm so glad it's actually happening!

I'm not going to sweat injuries. We've had more players injured on bye weeks in practice than in games.

It's going to be a lot of fun for the fans in the stands at Autzen.

Don't forget the 3 hour time zone change for JMU. They won't be used to that.

They'll probably be out on the West coast for several days before the game. School's out for everyone at that point. They'd pay for the use of a practice field somewhere, probably a high school, and get used to the weather and time zone a bit.

Not saying it won't be a factor just less of one.

It didn't appear yesterday that Ohio State learned much from watching the tape. Indiana's defense was able to duplicate much of the strategy they used against Oregon. We read so much about Mendoza, but their D may be the bigger story.

Coach Ryan Day post-game: “Very disappointed. Just overall with how we played. Didn’t play very well in the situations, third downs were not very good, not very good in the red zone at the end. I thought Indiana played really well, did a great job”

• On the team’s sacks it allowed: “They obviously brought different pressures and twists, but that was something they had done all season. We didn’t handle it well at all...This is a major lesson for this team, it can come down to one play or two plays or three plays that decide a game like this. This is a tough lesson to learn. We have to be more efficient across the board.”

As to weather, it’s true they have terrible weather in VA in December, but they have pretty good weather most of their season, I’d give us a slight weather edge.

It seems to me that a two loss Notre Dame team should be in ahead of a three loss Alabama team.

Excited about this championship seeding run. Opponents and locations line up nicely. If OBD "wins it all" and brackets run pretty much chalk, not only would we avenge the IND loss (At Home, No Less!), but put Ohio St. as only the third best team in the B1G/College Football, behind only IND and OBD.

B1G conference headquarters probably burning sacrifices to the Football Gods to make it so. LOL.😆

I think a lot of folks agree. My belief is the committee was very reluctant to punish an SEC team for playing in the championship and losing. They had NO issues doing it with Virginia...but Bama, that's different. That's SEC. 🙄

Even if ND had a lesser strength of schedule, they also LOST fewer games.

Alabama in with three losses is a travesty. Then, to hear their former coach be given a platform to try to eliminate the smaller schools in future playoffs. The SEC already had a stacked presence.

Ducks definitely have an easier path at #5 they we would at #6.

Yup. I'd understand them getting in if they were 10-2 after an SEC championship game loss...but 3 losses? That's complete garbage.

Brace yourself.

With the SEC switching to 9 conference games next year there will be at least one 3 loss team making it every year moving forward, imo.

I love that OBD is the PO 5th seed and is -21.5 vs. JMU.

What a reversal, thank goodness, from last season's PO opener.

Defeat JMU on the 20th, and it's a terrific break to play Texas Tech in the Orange and not the Cotton Bowl.

Notre Dame, hoist on its independent petard. Too bad, so sad. In the ACC as a football member or in the B1G, and ND is likely in the PO.

Bama? No way was the committee going to penalize a Bama team with the nation's top SOS for losing a conference championship game, especially with so many starters not able to play yesterday.

If Bama is healthy, I think the Tide has a chance to roll over an over-ranked OK team that it significantly outgained in the regular season loss.

I will say in looking at the bracket, Oregon's path seems easier than if they were the 6th seed.

Not taking ANYTHING away from Indiana, they have already beaten us and are extremely formidable.

That 6th seed though, you have to go through Georgia and probably Ohio State.

I won't say what Danny Kanell said about the Ducks and their path because I might be a little superstitious, but it rhymes with Rational Mamps.

The committee is factoring in injured players but not only playing 8 conference games? They should be personalized for a late season cupcake team as the other conferences take 50% losses.

There's really only one way to make all of this not so subjective and that to move to a NFL style playoff by cutting these mega conferences down to where everyone plays each other in the conference. This is compound when you only play 8 games conference games.

Let Alabama in but then get rid of T A&M. Letting the SEC have almost half the playoff spots is a positive feedback loop that just magnifies the narrative that the SEC is so dominant, they certainly weren't in last year's playoff despite what ESPN said.

Ok great this is a favorable path to the final four, no question. That said, as a season ticket holder I was hoping for a better matchup. Even Tulane would be more interesting, but to think that we could have had Alabama or Miami in Autzen if we were ranked a little lower makes me wonder how much of an advantage (at least for the fans) it really is to be seeded higher.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be there, but we'll be paying a premium price for the equivalent of a September cupcake game.

I stopped watching and listening after No. 5 announced and our opponent.

My wine tolerance is steroidal in nature compared to my lack of whine tolerance.
