Too Much Negative: The End is NOT Near for Oregon Football
jrw replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I think the obvious solution to this problem is to have a 12-month football season every year. -
If...if...student-athletes are legally employees, then I don't see how anything can stop unlimited NIL money. Restraint of trade laws would apply, or something like them, right? Not to say everyone, or even most people, would want this situation. But, all it would take is one athlete, or parent, or booster, or university to test the limits and get a favorable court ruling. But, if student-athletes are not employees, then limits and rules could be applied. But by what organization? Does the NCAA really exist anymore?

OregonLive Loses Canzano, and Now Andrew Nemec?
jrw replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Journalism of all kinds, but mostly local, still has not found a revenue model to replace advertising. -
Gotta think that if they offered a scholarship to a player with 3 years of eligibility left, they believe he has some talent.

Is Lanning Hinting, While Building Culture?
jrw replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Promise less, deliver more is never a bad strategy. But, it could also simply be a statement that there's always room for improvement, which is also a good way to look at things. -
This is why Oregon is winning the brand-building contest. I mean, how good is this, with the caption "goin' up?".
-
Maybe this is just the way recruiting rolls with Mr. Lanning at the helm.

Canzano, clearly a smart guy and a quite good writer, was never in the news business. He was an opinion columnist. As such, he had no real allegiance to the facts, but just to his own opinion. I think he early on figured out the click-bait nature of modern "journalism" and played to maximizing the eyeballs. There are a million people offering their opinions on sports; he was one of the better ones, but I won't miss him. I can hear opinions on sports from any barstool.

All-Pac-12 Edge Rusher Visiting Oregon This Weekend
jrw replied to kirklandduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
More significantly, both Josh Conerly and Lebbeus Overton (plus his brother) will be in Eugene this weekend. Open wide the Overton window! -
I suspect Crow will be eating a lot of…crow.

I did it for free. Is the $20 million offer still good?

This is brilliant. I hope it could be made to work. Seems as if athletes are truly employees, then all sorts of labor laws come in play.

NFT auction raises over half-million dollars for Oregon players. I guess I'm glad it's for our team, but I feel as if we're standing at the top of a slippery slope. Let's sing along!

I need a translation from Kliavkoff obfuscation-speak to English.

"...there isn’t many schools where the coaches will lift with the players so that was cool to see.” Come on now, I can tell that Mike Leach never stops lifting.

Good piece about Kupp.

Great post, Smith72. It's totally plausible that too much contact in practice was a cause of some injuries I wonder, too, if "filling the sleeve" came at the expense of flexibility in conditioning.

Whoa! This could Change Everything for College Sports
jrw replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Hmmm...I'm no employment attorney, but I was an employer for a long time. An employer/employee relationship would raise some questions to me, like Kliavkoff"s. Would an athlete's job be employment-at-will? Could he/she be fired? Would individual employment contracts be negotiated? More money for lawyers! Could employers demand non-compete clauses? No portal for you! What would prevent Texas A&M from hiring all the best employees? Will we have the Public Sector Champion and the Private Sector champion going head-to-head in the Scott Boras Bowl? I need to go lie down now. -
Keep it up and keep it the way it is, Charles. You can tell from the page views that the policy is working. It's not hard to rephrase, "If you believe Mario is a great coach, you're delusional!" Just change it to, "I don't think Mario is a great coach for several reasons, such as...". It's not that hard, just requires a bit of...decorum.

Actions Speak: Danno Concerned About the Defensive Line
jrw replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Don't know if y'all know, but Junior Siavii has met a sad end.
