Agree with the last statement, this team needs to have fun, look like fun, and when the whistle blows the last time everyone should be able to say that was fun. Even if the scoreboard doesn't show we won, if it was a fun game to watch, we didn't lose.

That past couple years we won some games, but lost, our mojo, who we were, and need to be. If we are a fun program to watch, again, then all is good in my book. The big indicator is if Seven is exciting, but doesn't score seven, then all is good.

I actually don't care if we win as much as we don't keep losing who we were. If the Ducks come out and introduce the Dan Lanning era, and it is compelling football, we may not have beat Georgia, but we are on the way to winning in the long run.

The rapid emergence of the sophomore receivers will make-or-break this offense, and in turn the team IMHO.  If they gain separation and Nix hits them--it opens things up for the tight ends and the running game.

I would add Seven McGee to the receivers that can make big plays down field and turn any play with the ball in space into a big play. He needs 8 touches minimum.

I also think, while certainly agreeing with limiting turnovers, we can't play too conservatively. We have to have some big plays and occasionally take some chances. Trust our playmakers.

In all likelihood will will have a very good defense this year from day one. We can either say, we will play conservatively to help out the defense, or we will play aggressively and trust the defense. I don't think conservatively is going to beat UGA.

On  the offensive side, everyone has to be on their game.  The offensive line has to give Bo time to throw.  The wide receivers have to step it up a notch and get open quickly and Bo has to make good decisions and make quick  and precise throws.

Georgia won't give us 4 seconds to throw the ball.  Time for this talented wide receiver room to show up and show out.

First game out for Lanning is the defending National Champions. Ironic that it is Georgia. It would be beyond my expectations that Oregon beats them.

Our QB and OL play will definitely dictate whether the Ducks have the ability to beat these guys. Offensively, the Ducks are solid. However, not one player on offense really stands out right now for Oregon. Collectively, they will all need to play solid football.

Defensively, I expect good things. However, with a new defensive scheme I expect some growth pains against a team the caliber of Georgia.

Are they good enough to beat Georgia in Atlanta?  It certainly is not expected based upon the spread. However, we do have a good team with talented players that have nothing to lose. Georgia will be tough, but Oregon will also be a dangerous team for them to play.

The game key that I'm watching for is that we have a higher score than UGA at the end of the game. I'll take field goals, safeties, scores by the Duck Defense, any and all points. Style points do not count.

The Ducks need to put on their big boy pants and show up. They need to deliver a little shock and awe playing with proficiency like they did last season in Ohio Stadium.

Go Ducks! 10-weeks and counting....10 - 9 - 8---- DAWGS

This is a classic catch from an AB throw. The defense is so certain we aren't going to throw downfield our receiver is wide open, and the throw looks more like a catch by a punt returner getting under the punt. Looking forward to our receivers catching passes in stride while going downfield, once again!

That is definitely something we will need to see to win against Georgia. I doubt Georgia is going to play off our wideouts, especially with the talent they have. The first game will be a huge test of our passing game, and the key players. If we can pass the ball against Georgia then it will be an amazing indicator going forward.

Basically I won't be shocked if Georgia can shut down parts of our offense. I will be extremely pleased if Oregon can move the ball well in any aspect. Georgia will be a huge, huge, massive test of our coaches and players on offense.

While I expect the Dawgs to win this one, I concur with Drake's assessment. I've  said before that if the spread remains 17 in favor of Georgia, I may place a small bet on the Ducks to beat the spread. But the Ducks are indeed going to have to  score a boatload of points to have a chance in this one against an offense, most of which returns from last year, that pretty much had its way against everyone it played except Clemson in the opener and Bama in the SEC Championship game.

I'll take a Moral victory, "good loss" against Georgia and be able to watch the rest of the games that day. I don't know if knowing that the players are having fun, and I'm having fun watching them is enough. That's what parents say when they watch their kids play, and to a point, where Beaver Nation is. It's not where the Ducks are.

Chip's teams were fun to watch, and they won. I wouldn't remember the Kelly era as fondly if they played the same exciting style but were 24-29 instead of 46-7. That isn't the Win the Natty or bust feeling that has taken over college football, but I put a premium on winning, winning ugly can be really fun.

Now, unless you're Alabama it's not realistic to expect to win it all. If you're going to even entertain the thought your team has to play top level football every week, it won't always be pretty, but it must be relentless. No fooling around.

Small things:

I believe the game is actually at a neutral site in Atlanta, not Athens, right? I know big difference right?

1) play so the officials can't swing the game. It's happened too many times. Blown calls, mystery penalties - usually not in our favor

2) game management - new head coach. Efficient use of TOs, player and play calling use and rotation

3) Emotions. Big game, lots of new faces. How will they handle that

4) Turn-overs and penalties. Duh

5) Don't hate me... toughness. I know, I know, Mari killed that thing. But Georgia, the crowd, the refs, etc are going to try and bully the Ducks and make them quit. Don't

Point #1- pound the rock.

This is a big ask. Georgia has been and I expect will be, great against the run.

In one of Nix's games against Georgia, he was leading rusher.

We need, as Mr. Fishduck pointed out, to get good use from our receivers, especially Seven. He and Hutson will present key mismatches to help move the chains. That in turn will help the run game.

Georgia has a couple very good db's.

This should be a very fun game for Dillingham and Lanning to game plan for.

They think they know Nix, but Lanning knows them, and Dillingham will have some new tricks up his sleeve.

The pressure is all on them to not just win, but dominate. I think it will be a very entertaining game. We will have so much to watch for, in game coaching, how are guys play, the defense, the offense, who steps up, etc.

This is a game we all better record, cuz we gonna watch it over and over.

Can't wait. Go Ducks!

Against Ga I think it comes to depth on the line and their pass defenders.

Keys that could give Oregon their best chance to pull off the upset.

1. I agree with the notion that Oregon needs to establish its running game.  It’s a big ask but likely not as daunting as it would have been last season.  If GA is forced to respect the running game it will really help The Ducks offense.  Oregon has a good O-line, and they must have a good game.

2.  In contrast to #1, don’t allow GA’s running game to control the flow. GA plans to get a comfortable lead and then lean on the run to wear Oregon down.  Also, if GA thrives in the run game, Bennet will likely also thrive, especially on play action and read plays.  This will be a hard to stop.  GA has 3 freakishly talented TE,s that Oregon will often see on the field at the same time.  They block very well and create mismatches all over.

3.  Obviously, don’t turn the ball over.

4.  Exploit any weakness you can find.  I’m not sure the the 2022 GA defense will have any obvious weakness, but if they do it could be key for Oregon.  I can tell you that the GA D will be very fast everywhere and speed oftentimes makes up for mistakes.  But GA is replacing many starters on D, it’s possible that Lanning can find some first game weaknesses.

Good points by Dawgs and Ducks on this board.  I brought this up when I joined but I would like to bring it up again, this is a great site for civil discussion about "your" team and "our" game.  I always get nervous when I see a Georgia poster because I am worried one of our "crazies" found this board.  But so far, at least what I have seen, we haven't had too many visit.

I imagine the odds will go up as we get closer to 9/3, but until then thanks for welcoming us! 🍻

I sure love this site. Hats off to all of the great, subjective comments to Alex article. So much to ponder.

As a near 40 year Duck fan it has been so much fun since "The Pick".

The program used to open with Boise State or Michigan State in non con slates. Then stepped up to Auburn and LSU. Along the way the confidence grew to step up to challenge the true elites like tOSU and now Georgia. Is this great or what?

I agree with all thats been said and would add that the Duck offense must keep that great Dawg defense off balance. Make no mistake that Dawg defense is going to be a monster. It will be no easy task...

The Ducks offense has great talent in the skill positions. The O line is experienced and can produce points. Mix it up and play error free ball. Nothing to lose so have fun.

If the Ducks were a member of the SEC this years defense would be the 3rd or 4th best in the league. So play like it and make the Dawgs offense earn every yard and every point.

Big boy football on the big stage. There was no bigger stage last year than the national championship game. Coach Lanning had his D players up for that challemge. I am confident he will have his Duck team ready for this challenge too.

Don't do what they think we're going to do. Have an innovated play list. Play hard, but loose, and fun. You got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Got to get pressure on the QB. DJ Johnson will have a breakout game. I believe DL and JL will have our D ready to shine.

Watch out Georgia here we come swooping in. Just like last year at tOSU.

I'm with you.  I think the reason the Mari No Offense "toughness" never really worked is because he wanted a "swagger down main street, look at me and see how tough I am" thing, when what works much better in life is a toughness that you never talk about, it's just part of who you are.  I'm more of a fan of the Teddy Roosevelt kind of toughness - walk softly and carry a big stick...  I want us to be the kind of tough that everyone thinks we're super nice guys, until they hear us run into their stadium!

Football is supposed to be fun. That has been my mantra since the Belotti days. It should be fun to watch, and a blast to play. Without fun it may as well be 2 old guys playing checkers. The fun factor is all that will redeem any sport from the distractions and complications that could ruin college athletics. When the fun dies, the support dies too.

Football hurts too much not to get some enjoyment out of it. There’s always going to be those on every team with agendas, whether it’s as a platform to the pros or more NILS $ or whatever. Those people kill the joy and always will. It’s left to the rest of us as players and fans to remember: let’s have some fun!

What’s really funny is you can’t take that too seriously.

Here would be my keys from a Dawg perspective:

Oregon O vs UGA D

1) Work to exploit UGA's youth at ILB.  With the departure of two SR backers and one JR from UGA's ILB group, the guys that will be out there in game one have very few snaps under their belt.  Oregon needs to throw everything at them.  RPO's, play-action, anything that could confuse the young guys and get them flowing to the wrong spot.

2) Test the new guys on the DL.  Last year UGA was able to rotate 4 1st round draft picks into the 3 DL spots (3 were drafted in '22 and one will be a first rounder in '23).  Jalen Carter is the only sure fire #1 up front now, so find out where he is and run at some of the other guys.  See if they can consistently keep their shoulders square to the LOS and play their gaps.  I expect there will be a pretty big drop-off in how well the Dawgs control the LOS.

3) Work the safety opposite of Chris Smith.  Smith is a good player, but depending upon who lines up next to him, it could be an opportunity to attack.  If it's former walk-on Dan Jackson, then you'll want to try and force him up in run support as much as possible.  He's a big downgrade from Lewis Cine in that respect.  If it's David Daniel then force him to make decisions in coverage.  He's heck on wheels in run support, but needs more experience in coverage.

Oregon D vs UGA O

1)   Attack the OGs in the pass rush.  UGA is really solid at C and both OTs, but will have some different guys at guard.  It isn't set in stone yet who those guys will be, but those will be the guys you have to test with stunts, twists, and blitzes.

2)  Don't let the Dawgs get the run game going.  This is easier said than done, but it's truly the key to slowing the UGA offense down.  If the Dawgs are averaging 5 to 6 yards a pop on the ground it just opens everything else up in the offense.

3)  If the Ducks are successful in #2 then it will lead to being able to force the Dawgs into third and long situations.  Of course no offense is great at third and long, but Stetson Bennett's numbers really tanked when forced into these situations.  More so than other QBs on comparable teams.

Pretty accurate. Let me expand on the points made.
Detail what the Ducks would face on each one.

1- IlB are a bit young, but all ILBs this year played in 14-15 games last year. Mondon, Jamon-Dumas, Marshall, Davis and Chambliss.  All played heavily in rotation too. They are young but not.  completely inexperienced. And all are 5* or 4* kids.
In reality it may be OLB Nolan Smith. He will be All SEC and maybe AA by end of season.

2- DL will be solid. Zion Logue and Tramel Walthour are solid SEC defensive linemen. Running away from Carter is kind of playing to Logue and Walthour.  I’ll guess all of these dudes will be draft picks. But Carter is 1 round guy.

3- Working the safety opposite Chris Smith….it’s going to be Tykee Smith. He was a 2x All American and 3x all conference at WV before transferring to UGA last year. Popped his knee in fall camp last year and don’t play until late.
FWIW

Sports Illustrated just named UGA’s DBs

“Best In College Football”

Offense

1- Attacking the guards isn’t bad advice.
Tate Ratledge will be one of the guards probably. He was a starter last year but injured first game.

Warren Erickson may be the other guard.
our line rotated so heavy last season inside it’s tuff to say. Our guards pull A LOT.
Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon at each tackle…they’re just too good.

but I agree on trying to get through the guards .

2- Macintosh (215) and Milton (225) are solid prototypes of UGA running backs; big and fast. And the 3rd guy Daijun Edwards is as good if not better. Milton is fun to watch…very Todd Gurley-sequel.
Look for OC Monken to loosen up your backers with some TE PA slants and then pull the guards to open his ground game.

3- 3rd and medium/long gins up the TE PA. You’ll see a lot of 13 personnel from Todd Monken. And we have pretty good TE’s.
Everyone discounts the WR’s but AD Mitchell should be an all SEC. And Adrian Smith is a 4.3 guy.
Ladd McConkey  ( the wife cousin) returns w 450y and 31 snags. He ain’t too shabby.

I know it comes off as homerish. But this is just a counter to the points made. I hope it’s just seen as information.

Defense

1.  ILBs - I think you're overplaying the experience returning guys have vs. the guys who left.  I agree they are some talented dudes and won't be bad, but you can't just brush off the lack of experience especially in game one.

  • Career Snaps Lost to the NFL (3 players; Dean, Walker, and Tindall):  3309 total career snaps
  • Career Snaps Returning (5 Players; JDJ, Mondon, Sorey, Marshall, and Davis):  334 total career snaps

2. DL - Sure I **hope** that Logue and Walthour are good enough replacements, but they haven't shown it yet.  We do agree that Jalen Carter is a stud though.  Here's the PFF grades for the guys that left and the guys replacing them:

  • DL that got picked in the 1st round:  Wyatt - 90.3 and Davis - 82.6 and Walker - 69.9
  • Guys in the rotation in '22 - Logue - 55.3 and Walthour - 52.1 and Stackhouse - 65.0

3. We don't know yet if Tykee Smith will play there.  He played the STAR at WVU and was slated there for us last year before hurting his knee.  With the way William Poole played in the Championship game or with Javon Bullard coming on strong **maybe** Tykee moves to the safety opposite Smith, but we don't know that yet.

Offense:

1.  I hope that Tate does come back full speed, but Lisfranc injuries are no joke.  I don't think we can count on him until we actually see him in the lineup.  As for Ericson, he was the weak link on the line last year.  I hope that Willock, Morris, or Truss are able to beat him out.

2. & 3.  You just kinda went full homer on these last two points.  Milton is nowhere close to Gurley at this point in his career.  Gurley was special.  Milton is closer to Zamir White than he is Todd Gurley, and that's OK.  Todd was an all timer.

If this is post is a procedural violation - I apologize.  I'll go Read the Manual, brb 😉

Question:  what are some good Georgia forums (Georgia version of FishDuck) to learn more about the fandom's history and traditions.  I also want to learn about Georgia football.  I promise to represent myself and my Duckdom with candor, respect, and honesty.

Whatever you do, don't go to the Rivals Dawgchat.  Bunch of inbreeding going on over there.

Other than that, I don't think I know of a free forum that is good.  The ones I frequent are paid.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If you have a 24/7 subscription, then the board there is usually pretty decent.  You'd only be able to read and not post though.

I was hesitant to say bc I wasn’t sure if it was a violation.  But I suppose if Charles is adding to the conversation here it’s ok.  The Dawgnation forum is my favorite.  Most of the regulars there are good people and are talking Dawgs.  They go off wind at times but for the most part they are knowledgeable CFB fans.  Some much more knowledgeable than myself I’ll admit.  It’s a free forum so it’s possible you catch some slack, but the regulars there are by far good folks and they would welcome your input.

Defense

1.  ILBs - I think you're overplaying the experience returning guys have vs. the guys who left.  I agree they are some talented dudes and won't be bad, but you can't just brush off the lack of experience especially in game one.

I can see you’re a DGD. We could argue those points to death I suppose.
3 quick items and I’ll move on.
OL-

Willock probably will be the RG. Your right

Truss will work at RT I think.

DB- Tykee looks to be a S. Poole may be the star. Rumored of course.

RB- Milton I think will surprise.
We both agree K Macintosh is the man tho. and yes. Gurley was an all timer no doubt.

ok. Onto the question….Dawg forums who are common sense? I’m not sure any exist. Most are somewhat psychologically challenged. The college football forum on the falcons board…yeah…actual normal folks
